Yummy Hilo Hideaway!

Had time before we went zip-lining and asked for a good place to have lunch. They recommended Puka Puka which is a local favorite. The restaurant offers a variety of tasty local dishes. We had the Vegetable Don Plate, which has tempura style fresh vegetables, with fried rice (which was very... read more

Fabulous special of fried ono and fried oysters, with salad and garlic rice! Attentive and cheerful service. We certainly would have frequented this spot had we been in Hilo longer.

Just as stated in other reviews, dinner here was a treat! Tiny dining room, friendly people, sophisticated food. Enjoy!

We had the Chicken Katsu and Lamb plates, which both had greens and curry rice. They were both really good (the katsu was better) and the server was really nice.

Puka Puka is my #1 recommendation for friends and family visiting Hilo. Great service and locally sourced ingredients. Great stuff.

they have bentos ready to go!! Food is very good, fried foods are NOT oily. It's fresh daily. The place is not called puka puka for nothing, it's really small, only a handfull of seating is available. you will need to get there early 'cause they run out fast.

This place looks like hole in the wall eats. But do not get fooled by how it looks from outside. Really tiny place to fit less than 20 at a time. But AMAZING food. Everything here is delicious. We went there for lunch and thought the food was so good that we wanted to eat again. But we were staying... More

Went here around 2 on a Monday afternoon. Although the place is small and tired looking, it was clean and only one table was vacant. Ordered the special of the day--Coconut crusted shrimp--and an ahi pita. There was only one server (I said the place was small) but she took care of everyone quickly. Our food was hot when delivered.... More

We hesitated before walking into this small hole in the wall, finally lured in by the friendliness of the owner/chef de salle/only waitress. We were in for a double pleasant surprise - the food is multinational and very good! Yummy chicken katsu, Indian curry, falafel, lamb pita sandwich, fresh salad, excellent flavoured rice, etc. Very much in character with the... More

Just happened upon this place after two other restaurants were closed on a Monday. Nice portions of flavorful foods. Grilled ahi with salad and curry rice, and coconut fried shrimp with the same sides. Tasty, fresh, colorful food with fast and friendly service. Near the waterfront. Don't hesitate to try them!
