Yelpers recommended Puka Puka for plate lunch but there was no classic Hawaiian to be found there. Still, serendipity provided a tasty plate of spiced meat, rice and salad that was all good anyway. Not the place to go if you don't like melamine and vinyl. (Bonus: convinced my husband to use Trip Advisor exclusively when looking for recommendations.)

We stopped by for lunch while we were strolling through downtown Hilo. It's a total hole in the wall place but the food was outstanding! I had the vegetarian curry and my husband had the lamb. I have never tasted lamb that was so flavorful - whatever marinade they used, I want the recipe. Cooked to perfection and tender. Yummy!... More

We enjoyed the BBQ chicken and the chicken katsu. A must try! The garlic fried rice is to die for. The staff is friendly and attentive.

We were staying on the Kona side of the Big Island for 10 days, and decided to drive round the island and see the rain forests, water falls, Hilo, Volcano etc. For lunch time we were in Hilo. After touring the Lyman Museum we asked the receptionist there for a recommendation of a good place for a local seafood lunch.... More

The first time I ate at Puka Puka Kitchen was 5 years ago when I first visited the Big Island. The food was so delicious that when I made my second trip here a week ago, I knew I had to eat there again! The place is small - a hole in the wall - but the food is flavourful,... More

This was easily the best meal(s) we had in our 10 days in Hilo. We tried the famous 'Kens' & found it disappointing. But the less heralded Puka was AMAZING. Convenient to the farmers market, visit Puka during your trip. You won't regret it!

Really pleasant dinner in Hilo, enjoyed the spicy rice and salads. Good value in the heart of town, eat in or takeout.

We had the lamb and chicken lunches. Everything was great. It's nice to be able to get a full meal with main, rice, and salad at a good price for lunch. Would definitely stop in again.

This is my all-time favorite bento place. The ready-to-go bento come in a few sizes and are ready at 9:30 a.m, I like the large bento with meatball, salmon, chicken katsu, egg, and stir fried vegetables. My husband like the unagi bento and my son loves the small chicken katsu bento. It costs a little more than other bento places,... More

Sort of a 'Mom and Pop; hole in the wall' restaurant with great food, great value (by Hawaii standards), very friendly staff; we were totally satisfied.
