Expensive mediocre food

We decided to go to Cafe Pesto because of multiple high ratings. My guess is that the high rating is due to lack of good food in Hilo. I have given it 3-stars because of limited choices in the area. This would be a 2-star restaurant on the East Coast. Here are my thoughts: Atmosphere: 3-stars... read more

Went with a friend from Hilo. His favorite place. Food was good and portion was large. Coconut calamari was light and fresh ... Almost like tempura...

While over in Hilo for a helicopter tour, we had lunch at Cafe Pesto. It's in an older building along with other shops, etc. on one of the old town's main streets. The space is large, looking much like it did "back in thr day". The menu is varied with appetizers, sandwiches, pizzas, salads and larger entrees. The coconut crusted... More

We stopped in for dinner after spending the day checking out the volcano all day. They weren't very busy on a Sunday evening. I ordered a Teriyaki Chicken and my husband got the Filet Mignon. They were both okay, but seemed very pricey for what we got. They do not offer a salad with the steak and it didn't really... More

We chose this establishment based on a recommendation from a local and it didn't disappoint. The pizza was the best we had in a long time. Thin crust with fresh toppings. Only negative we could find is that the service was somewhat slow and we were there at a slow time. Definitively recommend to try this place if you are... More

Good fresh salads, pasta and sandwiches. I usually order pasta, which I find to be tasty and creative. . One of my favorite restaurants in Hilo, which I have visited for lunch and dinner several times. I also like their sister restaurant, also called Cafe Pesto, in Kawaihae, where I have had dinner several times.

Suggested to us by John at the Dolphin Bay Hotel - great suggestion. Located in downtown Hilo in the historic Shata building. Lots of choices - great salads and sandwiches. Short walk from the Farmer's Market. A solid dining choice.

We had a great lunch at Cafe Pesto. I completely enjoyed my stir fry lunch while hubby had a fantastic pizza. I never would have believed that these two very different cuisines could come from the same kitchen!

We picked because of Trip Advisor reviews and they were right! I had the Café Pesto cheeseburger and it was fabulous. Even better were the "Madam Pele Onion Crips - yowsa! I could have had a meal of just those! My 8 year old loved the wood fired pizza. Good value....YUMMY!

We wanted to try Paul's Place, but unfortunately with seating limited, we were directed to Cafe Pesto. An enjoyable walk through the farmer's market (catch this on Wednesdays over the lunch hour) took us to the Cafe. We were impressed with the menu variety and price, atmosphere, and view of the bay. The food was well prepared. Our table tried... More
