Delicious food and nice atmosphere

Been there several times and the menu changes. The food is always good when we go and the staff there is really nice and attentive.

Fresh local seafood and produce prepared well, with a unique twist – and it is just fabulous! The menu can change daily based on what’s available. App of Smokey Sashimi – Local Ahi, Kiawe smoked soy, Hawaiian chili pepper water, with extra virgin olive oil; and the Crispy Brussels Sprouts – Mom’s citrus with garlic fish sauce and crunchy baby... Once in a blue moon will you find such fine dining in an out-of-the-way storefront. The only thing café about this establishment is the entrance and the seating. The food was spectacular. It's been a year since we visited Hawaii and of all the excellent restaurants that we enjoyed - this is the one we keep remembering.

This restaurant is now called the Moon and Turtle. We were told it is still the same owner and menu as the Full Moon Cafe. The owner apparently decided to rebrand his establishment in keeping with the upscale and inventive menu offerings. The explanation wasn't clear. Whatever the reason, is is clearly not a cafe. It's a bit hard to... More

The name has changed to Moon & Turtle cafe. Our server explained the new name is based on an old Japanese saying that means going from the simple & earthy (turtle) to the sublime and elevated (moon). The name fits this place perfectly. The food is made from fresh, local ingredients that are in season. The menu only has four... More

We were looking for a place to park in Hilo and found one in front of this small restaurant. What luck as we were looking for a place to have lunch. There were four items on the lunch menu and four of us. So we ordered one of each; A small club sandwich, Pork bellies on skewers, stuffed dumplings and... More

The menu is small, but the food was exquisite. We loved the Brussel Sprouts sautéed with tiny anchovies and the risotto croquettes with green sauce was delicious as was the red shrimp curry. The curry serving was generous enough for four. Wine choices were good and reasonably priced. This is a small restaurant in old Hilo with the owner-chef in... More

After taking in the compelling but somber Tsunami Museum in Hilo, you may wantl to brighten the glow of being on Hawaii's Big Island. Walk half a block, then into the front door of the Full Moon Cafe. Take a seat in their cheery dining room, pick up a menu, and enjoy the attention to detail you see about you.... More

We went to place on a recommendation from our local hosts. The menu is changing on a daily basis, all ingredients are local and their smoked sashimi was voted best from the island. We took all starters and no main. We had little burgers, the smoked sashimi, a veggie dish and korean style short ribs, which were my favorites. But... More

On November 13th, we discovered the Full Moon after visiting the waterfalls. Our friend pulled it up and we were directed just up the street from the Tsunami Museum. Well, it was Hawaii in it's essence; tasteful and clean atmosphere. Menu offered appx 8 items and our group of 4 were well pleased with our choices. These were not regular... More
