While it's nice to see a restaurant surviving in the current economic climate, Deacon's has long had a presence in Torrington that presented a choice between the fast food restaurants and the sit-down full service of Deacon's. Over the years, I've passed on both choices...and headed to the local supermarket to make my own sandwiches because food service is such low quality in this town.
Food? maybe it's the best in town, according to some folk I've met there ... but it's typcial institutional fare from the big commercial food suppliers (Sysco?). It's not all that much further to Cheyenne, which doesn't have all that great of a dining presence, either.
Service? My waitress got me seated, a menu, and took my order fairly promptly. The sandwich and fries were delivered in due course, but I never saw my waitress again. I got up to leave and waited several minutes at the front cash register/counter before a girl in the kitchen area saw me there and came over to take my payment. It did not appear that they were understaffed, but more that they weren't paying attention to the clients. I would have appreciated a refill on my drink, but didn't see anybody to ask for it.
Overall, the recent experience bears out my experiences from years past. This place is a matter of convenience, not a place to seek out for a nice meal experience. It's been several years since I last stopped in here, and it will likely be several more years before I'll return ... even though I pass through Torrington fairly frequently on business or return from fishing trips in the region.More
