The Cavalryman Steakhouse is located on the grounds of historic Fort Sanders, established in July of 1866. In its heyday, the Fort Sanders Military Reservation protected the Overland and Lodgepole Creek emigrant routes, the Denver-Salt Lake City stage route, and the construction crews for the Union Pacific Railroad. Ruins of the fort’s powder keg are visible just southwest of the restaurant’s main building. The Cavalryman building was constructed in 1925 to serve as the clubhouse for the local country club. Just to the east, remnants of the nine-hole golf course can still be found.

Muched improved!

The Calveryman had a bad rapp until a couple years ago, after Marion Griffin sold it. The current history of Fort Sanders on the walls, and the improvement as a fine dining experience have improved the standards a lot. This is the first time my wife and I have been back to the Cavalryman since we graduated from the University 15+ years ago. We took our son and daughter-in-law to dinner and we were pleasantly surprised. The place has been renovated (looks like fairly recently) but has retained its western lodge ambiance with a real fireplace and wood everywhere!... More

I have been to the "Cav" a few times and each time I am simply not sure what I am in for. I have dined here and the food has been truly tasty--wonderfully cooked steaks, awesome mashed potatoes, etc... Other times it has been a train wreck. They run out of food, they cook dessert in the same oven as... More

It had been about five years since I last dined at the Calvary men restaurant. When I wanted to go somewhere special in Laramie, I knew exactly where to go. The three of us started off our dinner with the small beet salad and it was excellent. I ordered the bison short ribs with with mashed sweet potatoes (see picture),... More

Had the buffalo ribeye, as did two of my coworkers. Unfortunately, theirs were picture perfect whereas mine would have received the "world's greatest loser" award. The taste was fine, but you can easily see as the ribeye steaks were consumed that the other two, although cooked the same, were of better quality. Bummer.

This was the 2nd time we ate here, and once again, we had a fabulous evening. Folks, let's remember, this is not NYC, Chicago or LA, this is Laramie, WY. What you can expect here is service with a smile, large portions of really good food, and a menu that should please just about anyone. We saw wedge salads go... More

As part of parents weekend at the University of Wyoming, we decided to take our son out for a nice steak dinner at the Cavalryman Steakhouse. I'm wondering if they were overwelhmed by all the reservations.. While our waitress was very nice, it took a long time for her to place our order and then get our food - we... More

I have been amazed by some of the different information available on the Internet. This is the 2nd time I have been to a restaurant based on "on line" reviews and information, only to find the "on line" prices different from the menu prices, and neither one has offered the lower price. Both have said it should not be, and... More

I'm being a little generous with my rating but they really earned this. I stopped in Sunday at about 7 and the building didn't look more than 3/4 full. It was labor day weekend and they were the only place open. You could see the staff were really running. I overheard our bartender/host give a couple thatcame in after us... More
