Description: Hinterland...A new hub for contemporary American cuisine in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Executive Chef Dan Van Rite and Sous Chef Dan Turek, explore a multicultural approach to cooking and eating. Their journey to create bold flavors and uncommon pairings is a daily mission at Hinterland. In order to accomplish this sojourn, we've partnered with fisherman in Honolulu, Seattle and Portland, Maine. These partnerships allow our chefs to procure fresh fish as often as two times a day. Other relationships with small, local growers and ranchers allow us to provide our customers with extraordinary game as well as hand foraged mushrooms and heirloom produce. The result is a menu that evolves with every season and changes everyday.

The menu is very focused on wild game and clever ways to incorporate that into Gastropub food. Be sure to buy the cooks a round and you'll get a fee surprises!

Our son lives in Milwaukee, WI and we are in Oregon. We offered to take of the rehearsal dinner for his upcoming wedding, but being several hundred miles away, we thought it might get complicated. Not so, once we came across HINTERLAND. Andrea worked with us on a special menu, we had endless options. Hinterland also has several seating areas... More

What a wonderful place. I highly recommend it. We had a very late reservation with the hotel and when they called to confirm we were arriving, I mentioned we might like to eat early. They said to come when ever and they would accommodate us. Nice. Upon arriving, with our 9-year-old, the hostess mention that there was a hamburger on... More

Went for downtown dining week. Our party tried both the steak and Arctic char specials. Food was very tasty. Well seasoned and high quality. Our server was friendly and very knowledgable. Regular menu looks pricey, but I would go there for a special occasion.

Erica was our server and she was terrific! Dinner was paced perfectly and she was EXTREMELY attentive but not hovering. She was a blast to have as a server - funky, funny, and spunky. The food was killer. Everything tasted and looked wonderful. Ambiance was great. This is a classic Third Ward gem. It was hip, trendy, and slightly industrial.... More

Went here during Downtown Dining due to another restaurant losing our reservation. Hinterland accommodated us quickly at 5:45. Tomato dill soup and the salad were both great. Dining special of arctic char w/dal was wonderful. Flat iron steak for my husband had really good flavor, but chewy, chewy, chewy. Very limited menu due to Downtown Dining so our son picked... More

I had an evening at the Hinterland during a recent convention in Milwaukee, the whole gastropub being closed for our group. The locally crafted beers were absolutely excellent, as were the wines. The food was served buffet style, as we were a large group, and I got the impression that the kitchen was not geared up for serving so many... More

Although Hinterland had a beautiful atmosphere and an impressive look the the restaurant, the food was disappointing at best. We shared a charcuterie and cheese board, which turned out to be the best part of the meal. Then I had the beet salad and my husband had the mixed greens. Both salads were under seasoned and the flavors were again... More

Food was good but wow.... Bring your credit card and maybe have a late snack after you get home. Expensive -- quality of the food was good but the portion size was very very scant! I will probably never go back due to $$ & the food was a bit high brow-- many things listed-- but what are they????

This would be a great place for either a couple to eat or a larger group. They have both small dishes to share as well as mains. The dishes were unique and very tasty. Lots of great beer on tap and a nice wine list as well. The service seemed a bit slow, but I think that was to set... More
