Café Carpe is an institution drawing music lovers from all over southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois. The bar area in front is quite small, the veranda opening to the river is larger, and the music hall is bigger still -- and often all three are crammed full. I would rate the food at about 7.5 on a scale from 1... More

The Carp has been around for decades. It has an old timey bar with a microscopic kitchen tucked into one corner. In back, there is a seasonal porch overlooking the Rock River. Sandwiched between the bar and the porch is a listening room with frequent performances by very talented singer songwriters. That room is the heart of the business. Bill... More

It was a busy lunchtime. I had heard there was a back porch/deck overlooking the river and asked the "host" (manager??) if we could sit there. He quipped 'no, and its going to be busy for awhile." So I asked if we should wait to be seated or just find a seat and he quipped "well, just sit wherever'. Okay,... More

Cafe/Bar with a fairly small menu (which I prefer). Food is homemade quality and very fresh. Great music venue on the rock river. The atmosphere is definitely the major draw.

We love the Café Carpe and have been going there for years. We first heard the “Carpe” mentioned on Wisconsin Public radio because of its musical performances. Frequently we meet friends there who come from a different town. We usually go on Saturday nights for the excellent jambalaya. The desserts are very good also—carrot cake and chocolate decadence are our... More

Yes, time flies when you're at the Cafe Carpe. You just want to eat, drink, listen to the music, and be merry till the sun comes up. But you can't, so you just enjoy their wonderful food and live music offerings as often as you can.

The people at the carpe are friendly, and the atmosphere is inviting, especially with a great view of the Rock River. but don't come for the food. Essentially, it's a salad and sandwich menu, and it is just overpriced for the quality. I first went there with two other friends, and we all had a taste of the others' food.... More

Friendly service, delicious food and a beautiful summer evening on the screened porch overlooking the Rock River. Tomato bisque soup made with coconut milk was buttery and amazing. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of the ingredients.

This place is wonderful! We made the hour+ drive up to Ft. Atkinson to see one of our favorite performers and although we've heard about 'The Carpe' for decades, had never gotten around to stopping by. Now, we're kicking ourselves for missing out for all those years. The food we ordered (cold sandwiches) was excellent, and the menu was sufficient... More

My wife and I traveled to Wisconsin in the middle of winter with the Cafe Carpe as our destination. Behind the cozy dining room is an absolutely wonderful space where some of our favorite musicians were gathering to play, and we were able to attend two of the concerts on successive nights. We arrived early and were greeted by very... More
