good for an early dinner before a play

We were looking for a place to eat an early dinner since our evening play began at 6pm and the highly rated restaurants didn’t open before 5pm. Chanced upon the Devonshire Arms, which was a local hangout but fairly empty at 4:30. We had the fish and chips and the French dip. Both were very good... read more

I LOVE this place!! It really feels like a home away from home. The entire staff is so welcoming and accomodating, the food is always excellent, the prices are reasonable. The English pub grub is right on, and such a welcome treat. Try the Guinness bangers!! This is also the most convenient place to eat if you're catching a show... More

The fish and chips are excellent! The chicken wings are great. They also have a happy hour and weekly food and drink specials, which is unprecedented in Shepherdstown. However, this is where the honeymoon stops. The place is absolutely filthy and the service is deplorable. It has the ambiance of a basement bar in a rundown fraternity house. The staff... More

Most awful experience I've ever had. The good was overall ok, I had a small issue with my burger, it was just not good way over cooked. I shared this with the waiter/bartender and he started being very very rude while offering 25% off the burger I was not going to eat. (A $2 discount) My wife told him he... More

Came up for a day trip and this restaurant was highly recommended . So glad we went! When I go to a British pub I make my evaluation on how they prepare fish and chips . These surpassed my expectations and I would come here again for that dish alone. The batter was perfectly seasoned and the fish was fried... More

cold drinks and great burgers, make sure you get the cheese fries as well. I got a bacon egg and cheese burger. It was wonderful, if its a nice day make sure you grab a seat in the garden area. Very pretty and relaxing.

When I first discovered this place it was my 'go to' for fish and chips to the point that anytime that my friends and I were within half an hour away we'd beeline it to Shepherdstown. A few visits where service was 'meh', portion sizes dropped AND prices increased have now meant that I'll consider someplace else now. Service apparently... More

If you want a fun experience in Shepherdstown, go to the Devonshire Arms. Talk to Joe the bartender. There's a dog named Nishka who comes in daily and sits at the bar....very polite.

Went in and waited for about 10 minutes at the bar and the bartender was working on kegs and never bothered to even acknowledge us.

My husband and I were excited to try a real British pub. We were hoping it could become a regular for us. When we arrived, the bar was very noisy . If the food had been good, we could have tolerated that. We ordered the squash soup, which was brought to us, microwaved, warm in parts, cold in others. I... More
