A touch of Manhattan in the Shenandoah Valley

We're snowbirds and chose Winchester as one of the stops along the way. The B&B we were staying in highly recommended this place. Having lived in Manhattan and dined at many fine establishments, this was a real treat. 5 out of 7 courses were absolute home runs. The only 2 courses I would only rate... read more

Based upon several personal recommendations confirmed by online reviews my wife and I made our first visit to celebrate her birthday. She has been the general manager of fine dining venues for decades and can quickly distinguish the genuine from the wannabe. To allow the chef an opportunity for maximum creativity we ordered his tasting menu with wine parings, which... More

Thank you for your kind words. I enjoyed meeting you and your wife in the restaurant and cooking off-the-cuff for you. Our Chef's Whim tasting is seven courses of the foodstuffs that most excite us on any given day and it is sometimes true that each table's tasting will be different. In general, none of the dishes on the tasting... More

My husband and I ate here in the middle of the week. I called to see if reservations were needed and I was told probably not and but I since I was on the phone I might as well go ahead and make one. When we arrived we were greeted and seated promptly. I started with a cocktail (the name... More

Thanks for giving us a try! Because you so well described your meal, I was able to find your check. The cocktail that eludes you is my Passion for Whiskey, a cocktail that I devised and that is a customer favorite. Blending Bourbon, lemon, and passionfruit, it is modern take on the Whiskey Sour. I'm not much of a cocktail... More

Recently took my stepson to One Block West for his birthday dinner. Miss visiting this terrific little out of the way spot but no longer work in Winchester--Definitely a GEM! Variety of menu was delightful, food was fabulous and waitstaff, personable, knowledgeable and suitably attentive. Stepson had the Asparagus salad and the trout and loved it. I tasted the salad... Thank you for coming back out of your way to bring your stepson to dinner. I am so glad that we could help you celebrate. Thank you also for saying that our salad was not overdressed. As professionals, we pride ourselves on putting just the right amount of dressing on our salads. For those of you who habitually order dressing... More

It isn't easy to find a place that will serve a group of 30 plus and not have a set menu. The Virginia Tech Cotillion Association was pleased with the atmosphere and seating and distance from the George Washington Hotel. My husband was delighted with his lump crab cakes ( meat, not filler) and appreciated the unique beef tartare. This... More

Thank you very much. We enjoyed hosting your group, even if you went to the "other" university here in Virginia. ;) Good choice of the creole pork and grits! We love pork and we do a lot of it and a lot of customers ignore it, probably because they let themselves be seduced by more exotic-sounding things. Chefs love pork... More

We went to One Block West with a group of 10 from a conference. Despite this large group without a reservation, we were seated quickly. Interesting items on the menu, including rabbit (only one left and one of my companions got it). I was intrigued by the ricotta gnocchi with morels, since morels have such a short season. Others got... More

Thank you for stopping by and for your patience while we pulled together a table for your group. I am very happy that you and your group had a good time and enjoyed the food. Not sure what "not warm" in the title refers to. If it refers to the service, you may have noticed that your walk-in group swamped... More

My husband and I live just "one block east" of this fine gem of an establishment and have eaten here many times. We appreciate the ease of reserving a table and the relaxed, efficient and friendly service. The food is creative and delicious and Chef Ed makes it easy to choose the perfect bottle of wine by posting appropriate selections... More

Thank you. I'm not sure what prompted your review after all these years, but thank you all the same. It's always a pleasure to host our neighbors in the restaurant and it is always a pleasant surprise to see your name on the reservation book. I didn't know before now that you are a particular fan of the scallops, but... More

A rather understated entrance in an alley should not deter you. Inside things are comfortably spaced tables and an incredibly efficient server. I believe there were 6 tables of couples when a group of ten arrived. Our female was a rapid moving example of a real professional. Now the important part, the food. The chef's charcuterie platter was excellent with... More

I never thought of our restaurant as a boutique restaurant, given that we have about 60 seats inside and another 30 or so outside. But I kind of like the term. We are certainly all about quality of and attention to detail of food, wine, and service and that certainly fits the boutique model. I am glad to see that... More

The food is the most obvious part of the experience you will have here. The location is what it is (down an alley) but you will be very pleased after you leave and probably will be coming back. Our beer selection is limited intentionally. The beers we have are really great, but we're not a beer restaurant. We all love beer especially after a long hard service, but that's not the concept for this restaurant. We are a wine restaurant as evidenced by our extensive bottle list and huge list of offerings by the glass. It is news... More

Thanks a lot for dining with us and recommending to others that they must visit us. I am very pleased to see the words "attentive" and "staff" together. We aim for knowledgeable, attentive, and low-key service. Our front of house staff will be happy to hear your comments. Thanks once again. More
