Great start with a historic lunch

We arrived too early to check in, so decided to walk around colonial Williamsburg. You do not need a reservation here, waited less than 5 minutes. The menu is posted outside, so you can check it out. We both ordered a turkey sandwich, only so much more..(not sure of official name). We were more... read more

Especially good for lunch, this is one of the four Colonial taverns in Williamsburg. The ambiance made us feel that we were time travelling.

Nice because we didn't need to wait for a table. Menu could use some updating...very limited. We really enjoyed the shrimp and crawfish stew...it was delicious. Also ordered the Po'boy. Not at all impressed...bland and flavourless. Service was good

Food was good and just what I was looking for, although a bit pricey, but most of the period taverns in the colonial area are. Ate in the downstairs area, where it is lit by candlelight and a few electric 'candles' in hanging and wall lanterns, discovered the outside seating after we had eaten.

We had lunch at Shields. The service was fantastic. The food, however, was fair and grossly overpriced. Our waiter was incredibly attentive and gave some wonderful advice on local sights.

Very nice dining experience in an old inn that continues the Colonial Williamsburg experience. Some of the food ordered was a bit bland, but the stew was excellent. The main basement dining hall may feel claustrophobic to some. Service was friendly and prompt. Reservations probably advisable in season.

Make reservations about 30 minutes before you want to eat, or you'll end up on a waiting list for about 25 minutes- even in the middle of the week. Plates are about $12; children around $6.50. The food is basic hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, etc... Costumed servers take your order in this restored 18th century tavern. The place is much... More

This was a wonderful evening, in spite of the sub-par food for the price. Service was great, fun to read the menu, dine in a historic old home, and a very enjoyable cocktail before dinner. But the meal was pretty predictable and I don't recommend the cobbler dessert. Clearly, it was made in a mass production assembly-line hours before and... More

We have been to Shields Tavern a couple of times. Both times we've been seated in the basement (aka wine cellar) at the same back table with very low light. The basement is unique because it's all lit by candles just like they were served in the 1700's. However, I really dislike eating in the basement. It's dark and taking... More

Whenever we have friends or family in town we like to take them to eat at one of the historic taverns and Shield's is one of our favorites. Excellent food, fun mixed drink list, and the wait staff are always very nice and very accommodating of young children. There are always musicians in colonial garb that visit diners and there...
