All staff are dressed in colonial garb and there is also a minstrel who roams through all the different dining rooms and plays music and talks to the guests. We sat on the third floor and bathrooms were on basement level which was inconvenient. Climbing the stairs was a chore. The food was excellent and cooked in colonial style. Virginia... More

Shields is a very nice tavern. We ate lunch here and enjoyed our meal. Tavern meals tend to be expensive, however that is to be expected because of the atmosphere. It is fun to go back in time and mingle with the servers, cooks, and staff in period costumes.

We had a combo park-hopper ticket (Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Water Country) and found ourselves in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg at lunch time. In my travels, most historic places just have cafeteria-type food, so I was a little hesitant in eating 'on campus' instead of driving to one of the local places on the main strip. Shield's has ground... More

Husband and I ate here during our visit to Colonial Williamsburg. I had the Kings Arms ginger beer, beef pasties, and a hamburger (chopped beefsteak). My husband had an Old Stitch Ale, beef soup, and bangers and mash. The pasties were fine but had very little filling in them. The cheeseburger was good but the fries that came with were... More

This one is a bit pricey. It was a tad crowded at lunch but we did get in without reservations at lunch. The food was good but not outstanding. The atmosphere was great so you can experience dining in a tavern.

A fair selection including more contemporary fare with a period flare: Oscar Mayer frank, pulled pork barbecue, seared chicken breast, chopped beefsteak, vegetable trencher, seafood po' boy. The Grilled Vegetable Wrap was quite tasty (and quite large), and the Carolina-Style Barbecue Sandwich, Hot Chicken Breast with Swiss, the Chopped Beefsteak Sandwich, and Anne Shields’s Gloucester Gumbo were all filling and... We stopped in for sandwiches and were pleasantly surprised to NOT find the usual sandwich fare, but some excellent choices (VA ham and cheese, squash and tomato-filled pitas) and BEST of all- the Old Stitch Beer from the AleWerks. Dining by candlelight was a lot of fun for the kids, and they enjoyed drinking their colonial ciders with lunch (Kids... More

We were so impressed with the food here! We tried all the taverns and the food is good in all of them, but this is the best! We had a drink (awesome), appetizers and dinner and all three were excellent! Even my kids chicken was really tasty! I loved it.

We ate lunch here while visiting Colonial Williamsburg. The food is absolutely wonderful. We ate in the old wine cellar. The staff was pleasant and very helpful.

My husband and 3 children were looking for a true "colonial" experience and did not have high expectations in terms of food based on some of the reviews. I made a reservation on Open Table in the morning. We were blow away by the authentic atmosphere, dining by candle light and the strolling musicians. We all enjoyed our meals and... More
