Great ambiance, but pricey

We have eaten in the Williamsburg Taverns before, but never at Shields. However, it was the only only one of the four open at the time of year when we went, so that was where we ate. The portions were very limited and fair tasting but the atmosphere was really cool to eat down in the basement and have a strolling fiddler for entertainment.

The tavern was along the historical area of Williamburg. After walking for many hours, it was good to sit for awhile. The entrees were rather expensive for that type of establishment. However, the salad and sandwich portion of the menu where more in line with other restuarants of that caliber. The service was excellent and the waiter, Thomas, was very... More

We thought we would enhance our experience by eating at one of the Colonial Williamsburg restaurants - that was not the case. The food was mediocre to say the least and the service was slow. Our suggestion keep on walking to the commercial market area.

Great atmosphere, you get the feel of the old taverns of Colonial Williamsburg. Good food reasonably priced and a good selection of the beers and ales of the time period.

I'm giving this three stars because I can't say it's poor, but I do believe it is below average. It is too expensive for what you get. The server was condescending, bordered on rude, and the food was just average. I would not go again. Colonial Williamsburg is essentially closed down this month (January). It's no wonder. Maybe they can... More

My boyfriend ate Christmas dinner here and is was awful. Our reservations where arranged by the Williamsburg Lodge and we where anxious to have a great special dinner. The menu only offered two appetizers, three entrees and three desserts. My boyfriend had the prime rib that was the fattiest piece of meat he ever had not to mention that it... More

This was the only one of the historic taverns that we tried because it was the only one we could safely eat at. (King's Arms serves peanut soup, and Chowning's serves peanuts in the shell on the tables. My daughter has a life-threatening peanut allergy, so clearly those ones are no-gos for us.) We arrived at about 12:30 and were... More

Menu remains limited but it almost has to be. You are going for the atmosphere. I had the seafood pie which was delicious. Seasoned just right with plenty if seafood and vegetables. It is fun to be seated in different places each time we go and hear about that oat if the building was utilized.

My wife and I had lunch at Shields Tavern. I had the barbecue, and my wife had the shrimp po-boy; both were very good. I had the Shields Brew which was also excellent. The service was fast and friendly, and the atmosphere cannot be beat. No reservations were required, but the place was almost full in mid-December. The Colonial Williamsburg... More
