Good Italian on Balboa Island

We usually go to Ciao for the pizza's and salads and they do not disappoint. If you plan to visit during summer or weekends, allow some time or go by and put your name in first then stroll the shops while you wait. There is almost always a wait as the restaurant is small like most things on BI... read more

We went to Ciao on a Thursday evening in January around 7pm. We didn't have to wait for a table but the cozy restaurant was nearly full. We had a pizza, salad, our pre-teen had basic pasta. The food was good but not great. If it wasn't so convenient when staying on the island, I wouldn't make a trip to... More

My wife and I walked the island and came upon Ciao Italian Restaurant at lunch time. We sat just inside and had Pizza la Rocco and split a Caesar Salad. Salad was cold when served and the pizza piping hot. We were very pleased with our food choice and server was very attentive. It was a cool day but the... More

Browsing the boutiques of Balboa followed by a superb Italian food at this authentic restaurant is a pleasure not to be missed. With the sound of Frank Sinatra in the background the taste of the salmon salade was amazing. If you follow that by a stroll on the water front, that's heavenly...

Visited 3-4 times. Each time food was good but a little inconsistent-eggplant parm was good, bread, olive-butter and house salad v good, but the specials I tried were heavy and flavor unremarkable. Portions were generous and good value. Wait staff friendly and attentive. Wine selection small but complimented the food nicely.

In the 1990's and early 2000's, this place USED to be great (second only to Giorgio's). I went there recently and took several friends from the Philadelphia area. I felt embarrassed when I saw that they were pretending that the food was great. These guys come from a predominantly-Italian neighborhood on the East Coast and know their Italian food pretty... We loved our dining experience at Ciao! What a quaint place. The food was great, large portions, waitstaff friendly and price relatively inexpensive.

We get to Balboa infrequently and wanted to try a different restaurant. Caio had good curb appeal and reasonable TripAdvisor reviews so we decided to try it. It is a small restaurant with a fun, quaint, charming decor and interesting wall decorations/art. The server provided good service and the limited dishes we tried were quite good. We had the Linguine... More

We were disappointed. Not bad food, not bad price, not bad portions, but we prefer good. When we told our B&B host she apologized for her recommendation. Perhaps they have a new chef.
