Another one of those "Oh, you gotta try it, it's a classic" place. Tourist trap? Perhaps (the ice cream is not made there) or perhaps not (where else can you get a frozen banana these days?) Next time I'll try a different version of the banana, but skip most everything else.

Food places come and go on Balboa Island. Dad's has been here for a zillion years because they are the best for yogurt, frozen bananas, and "Balboa" Bars. Avoid Tutti Fruity like the plague. Sugar and Spice is your second choice.

Not sure what the fuss is about. I can get the same thing at the mall. Was good just not what everyone makes out to be. I thought maybe the ice cream or the chocolate made them b extra spec for all the attn-NOPE. Again it's ice cream so all ice cream is good just not worth the hype

I think the peanut topping probably tasted better with the frozen banana than the Oreo cookies, but you could also just ask for a half-half mixture to try two different toppings (I think it tastes better with more than one) or go for the "everything" topping if you really can't decide. :)

Of course you must stop here to get either a frozen banana or a balboa vanilla ice cream bar dipped in chocolate and rolled in nuts. The service is friendly and the prices are reasonable considering that you're on Balboa Island. My only suggestion would be for the floors, counters and cases to be kept a little cleaner...

The frozen bananas are good. The milkshakes was very milky. However, service was good. I would just ask for light milk if you order a shake.

THIS is the original frozen banana place where my mom even went growing up some 60 plus years ago and it has been a family destination ever since, no matter where in the world we have moved. Adults and children always love it and the location is PERFECT! Would never get frozen bananas anywhere else!

When you are on Balboa Island, the best place to stop for balboa bars (ice cream) and frozen bananas is Dad's Donut Shop! Make this a stop when you are in the Newport Beach area.

Excellent ice cream. They guy at the window was very helpful and patient with all our questions. Love the Balboa bar, simple concept with great results.
