A trip to Newport Beach and Balboa Island is not complete without a stop at Dad's. A small bakery and ice cream shop (with balboa bars and frozen bananas too). Pick up the Hippo Cookies for friends and family and be sure to have one yourself. Iced in a dozen beautiful colors…irresistible!

For $3.50 you can have the best dessert in town. Head over to Dad's on Balboa island for a Balboa bar. A square chunk of ice cream dipped in chocolate and then choose your topping. I have chopped almonds and chopped peanuts. So delicious! I am already planning on taking my family for this delicious treat.

Lovely little doughnut and coffee shop that also sells ice cream. The donuts and pastries are freshly baked and the coffee is hot. The staff and smiley and nice. There's no seating inside but it's very pleasant to sit on the bench outside and people watch.

This what is undermining Trip Advisor's reputation. Number 2 restaurant on Balboa Island? This is not a restaurant by any standard anyone could apply. It's a bakery / donut shop. With history maybe. You can buy coffee to go with your donut and consume both on the street outside or take them home. Personally I found both the coffee and... More

My wife and I were in Balboa on vacation and I needed an afternoon snack. I popped into Dad's for a donut ( or two ) and they were great. The staff was pleasant and prices good. What else would you want from a bakery ?

We're from England and still don't understand the Starbucks thing. Dad's is 100 yards down the street on Marine Avenue, Balboa from S-bucks and the coffee is MUCH better and is served by smiling people. What the choice here ? Come on Balboa people - get real!

We tried both the large frosted sugar cookie and the frozen dipped banana. Both were great little treats. The donuts looked great too.

We visited Dad's on our last day on Balboa Island, which coincidentally was Christmas Day, and stopped for coffee and a donut. They were the only place open on the holiday and were slammed with customers. We wish we had discovered them sooner. Absolutely the most lovely staff you will encounter on the Island, cheerful, efficient and fast! My husband... More

I read a bunch of great reviews about Dad's so we went out of our way to stop by for a donut and ice cream. They do have Dryer's "hard" ice cream instead of soft serve with about 20 choices. The donut was a bit stale, probably better to go in the morning. The hippos that everyone talks about are... More

My girlfriend and I usually try to stop here when we are on Balboa Island. They have a pretty awesome selection of ice cream and deserts. There is sometimes a really long wait which can be frustrating at times but it's still a cool place to check out. Staff is friendly and always outgoing, definitely worth checking out if you're...
