Desert time!

When you are on Balboa Island, the best place to stop for balboa bars (ice cream) and frozen bananas is Dad's Donut Shop! Make this a stop when you are in the Newport Beach area.

Excellent ice cream. They guy at the window was very helpful and patient with all our questions. Love the Balboa bar, simple concept with great results.

When I saw this place, It attracted me to walk in and try something on a bright sunny day. So as I work myself in the mini standing area, there was so much to choose from. Their ice cream section looked very appealing, I went for chocolate. The ice cream was soft and creamy, and I struggled a bit to... More

You can't help but walk by this place while in the area. I had to have one of their frozen bananas. They came in different sizes and once they were dipped you could choose from different toppings to roll them in. My kids opted for ice cream. They had a good selection of Dryers ice cream, and soft serve. They... More

Skip a meal so that you don't have to feel guilty indulging at Dad's, famous for their Balboa Bars. (My husband even loves saying it like a thug.) While the grandkids like those, I gave the chocolate dipped cheesecake a whirl and it is decadent. Donuts are great and the ice cream is as well. There's usually lines, but it... More

We stopped in while walking around the island. Plenty of good quality treats. I went for the peanut butter cup ice cream. Wow was it good. We walked the outer loop around Balboa and Little island's. 2.6 miles which hopefully burns about one ice cream scoop. Dad's is in a great spot on Balboa.

Dad's has been around forever and a few years beyond that. We love the applesauce and blueberry donuts, the buttermilk are also great. I just cannot eat them every day because I would look like I was wearing an innertube. Dads also has Balboa bars, an ice cream bar dipped in chocolate and covered with your favorite topping, and frozen... More

Okay, so the debate has raged for years about who was the "original" place to sell frozen bananas. Who cares? What matters is who has the BEST. Dad's hands down. They also have Balboa Bars and killer Apple fritters. The frozen yogurt is the best on the island.

As a little kid growing up in Newport, this was always my go to place for Balboa Islands legendary Balboa Bars. Decades later nothing has changed, this place is still fantastic, and now that I live 3,000 miles away I visit on every trip home. I love passing this onto a new generation by taking my nephew and niece there.... More
