The good points first - excellent service and friendly staff. Now the dinner; a delightful wine - Gavi di Gavi. Robust and full of character. Highly recommended. The cured salmon with beetroot salad and salmon mousse. Lovely. The Sea Bream; fine. Unfortunately let down by two chicken parfaits that looked like melted grey ice cream. Very little taste so a... First I would like to congratulate whoever trained the staff, and the staff themselves as the service really couldn't have been better. If a glass of water was empty it was almost immediately refilled, they checked every course was satisfactory, and all of this without interrupting a single conversation. Excellent. Value for money is superb if you choose 2 dishes... More

Went here for afternoon tea for a friends birthday. We were very disappointed, the scones were stodgy and huge , the cakes were ok but not fresh , the sandwiches were best but just piled haphazard.y on the plates . The teas were lovely as were the staff. Such a shame as it a lovely place to sit and enjoy... More

Food was delightful: chicken liver parfait to start; Steak and large chips; duck and potato (my potato could have been cooked more - probably chance, yours or mine on another occasion might be just right). The summer pudding was just right, as I wanted fruit, so fed up with all sugar desserts. Service was smiling and obliging, two friendly and... More

A birthday treat cream tea, the setting, sandwiches, scones with cream and jam, creme brulee, tea and coffee were all good. The other items were not so good, very dry eclair and tasteless tartlette and jelly we tried them but then left them. As we didn't really have much room for them in any event, it fortunately didn't spoil our... More

Stayed at the Grimsdyke hotel for a special occasion and enjoyed a lovely meal in Gilbert's restaurant. Service excellent and the choice of dishes very varied. Great value for the price. Will go again as live quite local.

We and friends had Sunday lunch at this historic home. It was the home of W S Gilbert - of Gilbert & Sullivan fame - and his family until the late 1930's. The house itself is imposing and the grounds are just right for a large meal and a gentle stroll to walk it all off afterwards. The food was... More

The food at Gilberts from Monday to Friday is very well priced for a four star hotel. The Saturday dinner was excellent. We started with a soup appetiser which is provided free of charge. We both had scallops from Skye with black pudding - yum. After a champagne sorbet, my fillet steak was nicely cooked with tripe cooked fat chips,... More

We had a great three night break - the highlight was the food. It was beautifully cooked and presented and of a fantastic quality. From Monday to Friday (lunch and dinner) there was a £12.95 2 course fixed price menu as well as the a la carte. What a bargain!!!! The Saturday evening menu was £28.50 for 3 courses (plus... More
