I recently enjoyed my first experience at the Monastery. I went with 2 others and we each had a different thing on the menu so we could try a more menu items. Everything I put in my mouth was delicious! The waiter was informative and helpful with all the menu items. I would look at their website beforehand so see... More

This place was a surprise and then some! For Norfolk. Where trendy eateries come and go, this place was such a surprise! My husband found out about it from a friend. At the top of Granby St. downtown, it can be a little hard to find and parking is not easy...but...so worth the effort. You enter through small swinging doors... More

The inside of the restaurant is "old-worldly" and intimate. Wanting to start our dinner with a cocktail, we asked for a drink menu. We discovered there wasn't a drink menu or a bartender or a full bar for that matter. The "full bar" consisted of some brown alcohol, some white alcohol, a few fruit brandies and some mixers. The drinks... More

We were in Norfolk to see a concert at Chrysler Hall--the Monastery Restaurant is just a short walk away. As my husband grew up with Viennese food, we were happy to find this restaurant with THREE different kinds of goulash and knoedels--Austrian fruit dumplings. Not as good as mom used to make, of course, but scrumptious and a real treat.... More

A few years ago, we used to come here often before heading to the symphony. The restaurant was always packed; the food, hot and delicious. My husband and I recently came for a date night at eight o'clock on a Friday night. The place was deserted. It was a bit weird. One couple came in, sat down, took a look... More

My wife and I had dinner at the Monastery last night as part of Restaurant week in Norfolk Virginia. We have dined here occasionally over the years and most of our visits have been enjoyable. On this occasion our dining experience was mixed at best. As requested we made a reservation for dinner and arrived on time and were seated... More

One of my favorites. Eastern European (Hungarian and Czech) dishes are not standard fare so this place is a nice change. Everything is freshly prepared and the staff and owners always make you feel like you are family.

I stopped by here for dinner while on a business trip, based on previous Trip Advisor reviews. I'm glad I paid these guys a visit; had no idea the owner would actually be in the kitchen preparing my meal from scratch (or that the guy actually bakes his own bread, too). It felt less like a restaurant and more like... More

If you like visiting with and getting to know the owners, chefs and waitstaff at a restaurant you visit, Monastery's for you. If you favor a small, cosy, warm and comfortable decor --- albeit maybe a little bit dated --- you'll love Monastery. And if you get excited about wonderful regional dishes, authentically prepared by first-generation Americans who immigrated from... More
