A Very Different Restaurant

I have been to The Monastery Restaurant twice in the past year. Both times, we had an excellent meal and excellent service. I have had the Serbian Goulash and the Brochettes. Both meals were very flavorful, just enough food, not too much. We also tried the Hot Apple Strudel and the Fruit... read more

VERY small, quaint, quiet restaurant. Great place to enjoy European comfort food and be able to enjoy the company you are with. Our server was VERY attentive, very polite and quick to answer our questions about the bar drinks and wine selections. The food was delicious and the variety is nice. We loved the bread, cheese and spread that came... More

Excellent food with a wide variety of entries. Old world cooking makes it rather a unique restaurant

I've lived in the general area for 20 years, and never heard of this restaurant until a few weeks ago. They may want to up their marketing game. It's my job to select the place for New Years Eve for ourselves and our friends. They say - do a job well and it's yours. I've been doing this for nearly... More

We usually come here around the Holidays for a nice dinner. The food and service is always excellent and this outing was no exception. I had the Goose and it was amazing. My wife did the holiday soup and some apps to include the cheese tray and escargot. All was excellent, the owner/chef came out twice to ensure everything was... More

After 1 1/2 hr wait, meal did not come so paid for the wine and left. The first food we ordered was not available. We were told this 1 hr after we ordered. They told us that it was a computer glitch. We waited for another 1/2 hr for the second order which never arrived.

We have been here several times. If you want to enjoy an authentic European Dinner, then this is the place. Look at their menu on their website to get a true feeling of their authenticity. We have travelled several times to the old country and this place is the real deal. The owners come from the region and have years... More

It is the real thing. The owners arrived from Czechoslovakia in the 1960s. The Monastery on Granby Street in downtown Norfolk is, without doubt, the best Eastern European Restaurant anywhere around. It is the oldest restaurant downtown...more than three decades. Authentic, delicious, and memorable. Wiener schnitzel, homemade crusty bread, homemade smoked sausage, red cabbage and the best thinly sliced potatoes... More

What a treat to find a hole-in-the-wall gem. I have driven past this place for years. Finally a Groupon got me to try this place. Excellent ambiance, service, and food. Save room for dessert. The homemade fruit dumpling is to die for....it is that good! This place is a must-try. A little pricey, but delicious.

Quiet atmosphere with old European ambiance, perfect for special occasions. Service is friendly and professional. Every plate brought out, from the bread plate appetizer to the Serbian Goulash with dumplings entree to the fruit crepe flambay, was delicious! Will certainly be back for the next special occasion!
