As a relocated New Yorker in VA I was sorely missing Pasteles over the christmas holidays. A friend suggested La Pena Horib. The food was so awesome I couldn't stop eating. Bought frozen Pasteles to take home and cook later. Pasteles take 45 minutes so call ahead to get them started if you are in a hurry. The pork was... More

We struggle in this area for great Hispanic food. I love love love a good Puerto Rican or Cuban meal. Unfortunately we just dont have it on this side of the water. This is the best option if not the only option in Hampton or Newport News. The food is not bad, but more a fusion of Hispanic flavors.

We just got home from dinner at La Pena Horeb. We're locals, but had never heard of this restaurant. Saw it was rated #1 in Tripadvisor and decided to give them a try. I could not recommend that locals or tourists visit. First, the area where the restaurant is located is "sketchy" at best. That aside, inside, there is no... More

Stopped here with my wife Wednesday night for dinner. The restaurant is not fancy and has no alcohol. I had chicken mofongo and my wife had steak fajita. Mine was quite good, well seasoned and generous portions including typical lettuce and tomato salad. My wife did not care as much for the fajita. We both had flan for dessert which... More

If the place had a bit more ambiance, it'd be a 5-banger, becasue the food is off the charts! Hands down the best mofongo on the mainland -- just make sure you get the mofongo mixta. Haven't tried the mofongo verde, but why take a chance when the mixta is soooo delicious. Have had the pernil/carnitas, the shrimp, the chicken... More

Yeah, this isn't the type of place you're going to take a date. The atmosphere is diner like and the Spanish religious music that's just a little too loud doesn't help. But that's not why people love this place! The FOOD, the FOOD, the FOOD! Get the Cuban sandwich and I promise you will dream about it and you will... More

They have a modest menu and great taste all around. Very attentive personnel and spacious area where the crowd won't bother you. Food is flavorful, Fresh and well cooked. Not over seasoned. Tostones are made on the spot and the food tastes fresh all around. Pulled Pork is one of the best I've had. Cuban Sandwich is enough to feed... More

First let me say...I'm not a fan of Mexican food. With that said...this was not Mexican it was Spanish / Latin. It was exceptional. Homemade corn and flour tortillas. Tacos that had FRESH everything. At our table, not one thing wasn't homemade. My husband had the burrito which he said was excellent. My Daughter in law had the homemade chicken... More
