My husband picked out this restaurant in celebration of our anniversary. Boy did he score points! The food was outstanding. The service was very attentive. The atmosphere was very inviting. Needless to say we had a very awesome anniversary dinner and we live in Georgia. You have to try the African grits!

For lunch at The Shebeen, we ordered Cape Mussels as appetizers. The mussels were wonderful and prepared with shallots, white wine, parsley and cream. The mussels were big and delicious. The broth was fabulous with the dipping bread.I had Sadza Cakes for the first time and was so happy I did. Sadza Cakes are Parmesan polenta cake, topped with eggplant,... More

That's what my wife said after finishing dinner there. She had the Durban chicken -- nicely spiced and I had sosotie (marinated lamb and apricots on a skewer with rice and lentils). Both were outstanding with layers of flavor that interacted but still maintained an independent identity. A tremendous list of South African wines that complemented the food nicely. I... More

Interesting restaurant tucked away in Charlottesville. Enjoyed dinner with family recently. Did not especially care for seasoning on my entrée but loved what several others chose.

We came across this place by accident whilst touring in the area. Normally we research restaurants ahead of time (to avoid bad experiences) but this time we tried this South Africa diner on spec and were blown away! The starters of Corn Chowder and French Onion soup were filling enough but the Sosotie was delicious, rich and flavoursome with a... More

We have been with the family to The Shebeen. Quiete nice atmosphere, I liked the porge they added on the outside. The food was quiet expensive and I was personally missing more real african ingrediants like exotic meet, african spices and traditional dishes. We had a burger(made was overdone and not spiced), a lamb curry ( good taste, but could... More

While the staff was friendly enough, there seemed to be no management. We waited 20 minutes and since no one came to our table, I passed by the host stand and asked if someone could help us. The nice young lady said she'd be right over. 15 mins. later, someone at an adjacent table also asked about getting service. When... More

Thank you for your honest review of our establishment. During the 2014 World Cup we have received a number of slow service complaints and are working diligently to improve the service and attentiveness of our staff. We are also in the process of revamping our menu as well as training procedures for our management and front of house staff. As... More

Some thoughts... An African restaurant with not an single person from Africa. They had a computer glitch and held our credit cards for over 45 minutes. This place is very loud. We are up to 48 minutes. I want to die.

Thank you for your candid review of Shebeen. I am aware of the issues that you experienced during your time with us. Our ISP went down in a short but powerful storm. We hope that we have mitigated this issue in the future by ensuring that we have a Square account available in order to take care of credit card... More

Total freak luck we stumbled across this place while taking a break driving between Charlotte NC and Washington DC. We are African food and wine lovers so we were skeptical at best when we parked in front of what looked like a college dive bar. Figured it was some quick service hole in the wall place with a few simi... More
