Good Food but Cold, Cold Service

We've been to Shebeen multiple times before, but this was the first time we left disappointed and went to another restaurant. Despite 3 other tables for four that sat empty the entire time we were there, we were seated at a table for two practically on top of a large group and next to the dirty dishes door. My view... What a lovely place for trying unusual and delicious foods! In our fairly large group, we tasted bites of others' choices and were impressed with salads, brie and calamari appetizers, ground nut stew, sadza cakes, and lamb curry and shanks. Very competent and gracious servers paid attention to each of us but didn't intrude. Vegetarians in our group were very... More

I came here with a friend to relax and enjoy some South African food and wine because how great is that in Charlottesville VA?! We were doing very well at first, wonderful server, food was lovely, (I had the shepards pie and a glass of merlot... divine!) Then the manager came over, interrupted our conversation and stayed far too long.... More

My friends, who live in Charlottesville, suggested The Shebeen for lunch. Perhaps one other time had I eaten in a restaurant with a South-African spin. This was a delightful surprise to me. The menu was very original with items I had truly never seen anywhere else. We settled on the Pork BBQ (I know - not sounding very African), a... More

The BEST calamari I have ever had. I am also not a big meat fan but my family ordered the shepherds pie, which they make with lamb instead of beef. WOW - it was outstanding! So delicious. If you ever find yourself in Charlottesville, the Shebeen is a MUST-visit!

I go to shebeen because they say they play soccer, almost every time I go to watch, the games are not on or the bar is not open or the staff don't know what games are on. After some prompting and direction it is usually worked out. But I think this is part of my problem with the shebeen. it... More

Came here for dinner. Atmosphere is really fun. Menu is interesting and unique, definitely has something for everyone. Wait staff is attentive. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for something a bit different! Parking is great as well, right in front of restaurant.

This is a South African pub/restaurant. It's got a really nice mix of different foods, combining European and African influences. We've come here with lots of different groups of people now, and always come away happy. I particularly recommend anything on sugarcane skewers.

We called into this South African themed restaurant for Sunday Brunch. Served by Sean, nothing was too much trouble. I had Eggs Cheasapeke which was Eggs Benedict with crab, it was delicious. One friend had the Cornbeef Hash. The position was enormous and he said it was wonderful. The other friend had Eggs Benedict with Somked salmon, he said itbwas... More
