We came across this place by accident whilst touring in the area. Normally we research restaurants ahead of time (to avoid bad experiences) but this time we tried this South Africa diner on spec and were blown away! The starters of Corn Chowder and French Onion soup were filling enough but the Sosotie was delicious, rich and flavoursome with a... More

We have been with the family to The Shebeen. Quiete nice atmosphere, I liked the porge they added on the outside. The food was quiet expensive and I was personally missing more real african ingrediants like exotic meet, african spices and traditional dishes. We had a burger(made was overdone and not spiced), a lamb curry ( good taste, but could... More

While the staff was friendly enough, there seemed to be no management. We waited 20 minutes and since no one came to our table, I passed by the host stand and asked if someone could help us. The nice young lady said she'd be right over. 15 mins. later, someone at an adjacent table also asked about getting service. When... More

Thank you for your honest review of our establishment. During the 2014 World Cup we have received a number of slow service complaints and are working diligently to improve the service and attentiveness of our staff. We are also in the process of revamping our menu as well as training procedures for our management and front of house staff. As... More

Some thoughts... An African restaurant with not an single person from Africa. They had a computer glitch and held our credit cards for over 45 minutes. This place is very loud. We are up to 48 minutes. I want to die.

Thank you for your candid review of Shebeen. I am aware of the issues that you experienced during your time with us. Our ISP went down in a short but powerful storm. We hope that we have mitigated this issue in the future by ensuring that we have a Square account available in order to take care of credit card... More

Total freak luck we stumbled across this place while taking a break driving between Charlotte NC and Washington DC. We are African food and wine lovers so we were skeptical at best when we parked in front of what looked like a college dive bar. Figured it was some quick service hole in the wall place with a few simi... More

We had a delightful dinner at The Shebeen. Its interesting, comfortable and attractive decor, and out-of-the ordinary, delicious food, added up to a wonderful experience. I would especially recommend the eggplant fries and chocolate ganache samosas.

This place was specifically recommended by a co-worker when she heard we were visiting Charlottesville. There were some tasty entrees we were told not to miss! We arrived on a Wednesday evening, the place looked interesting and inviting, with a cool outdoor tropical-looking bar. That's when the experience started to go downhill. Our server, who seemed pleasant and friendly, arrived... More

I've visited here once a year for quite a few years. The food never disappoints. South African cuisine is not something I see in my home town, so it's always a treat to eat here. Calamari with fried capers and lemon sauce are spicy and wonderful. The mussels are well cooked in a rich cream broth. My dinner mates all... More

This restaurant has been around for years, but it's kind of hidden just off the downtown mall, so I never immediately think of it. That will change. Their food is simply great and the place had a cool atmosphere, friendly staff and a wonderful outdoor seating area and bar. Don't overlook this place!

This was our 2nd visit to this delightful South African restaurant. There is a good wine and beer list with several choices on draft. For appetizers we ordered Samosas - triangular pastry filed with spiced ground beef and lamb served with mango chutney and Zambezi Satay - skewered filet of chicken seasoned with ground peanuts and ginger, grilled and served...
