At The Shebeen Pub & Braai we present you with South African hospitality. Our menu reflects the multiculturalism of the Southern African palate. From spicy African peri-peri sauce and Dutch farmer's Boer sausage to pub-style fish 'n chips, you will explore a cuisine of surprising diversity. College Turnover affects Service but Food Overcomes

There was an acute shortage of wait-staff. This seems a routine that plagues college towns. Those Zachary did his best to cover a lot of tables and others pitched in. I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed the Sadza Cakes and the Ground Nut Stew, Gina! That said, I appreciate your feedback about the service and the Fish and Chips, as I feel both are worth looking into. I hope we'll see you again soon for an even-better meal! Thanks, Walter, Owner More

Found this on TA so decided to try while having an overnight in Charlottesville. We love South Africa and this is first SA restaurant we've found in U.S. Long menu with mix of traditional English dishes and more unique to SA. Enjoyed the satay starter and Durban chicken. Great long list of SA wines but no local beers. Only complaint... More

Great food, attentive service, fun drinks and chill atmosphere. They have semi-outdoor eating with a bar with swings (see picture). It's a covered area outside with a bar. The food is always really good and there's a rather large menu. There's actually a really good brunch menu that I always forget about. I've had the peri-peri chicken (very spicy) and... More

This is my go to place for showing out of town visitors something unique to C-ville. The food and service are always good. I especially like the Durban chicken. They have a very good wine list with South African wines not sen anywhere else. Highly recommend.

My wife and I visited during Restaurant Week and enjoyed the fixed-price menu. The offerings were all new to us, and we eagerly tucked into them. Sadza cakes, samosas and polenta were all excellent, as were the deserts. The service was attentive, but not intrusive. Overall, a great experience.

Shebeen has been serving the C'ville area for years. The cuisine is heavily influenced by African foods and meats. Preparation and presentation of the various dishes has always been excellent. The menu includes a good variety: lamb is prominent, including a lamb shank to die for. Vegetarian dishes, and salads are also featured. Of special note are the mussels, and... More

You have not had good cuisine until you have dined at The Shebeen! I am new to the area and decided to try something new for lunch. First, I must say, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant is much bigger than it appears from the outside. I am quite the foodie and a lover of all things... More

Two of us went for out first experience with African food. Both of us found both our meals, and each others, to be absolutely delicious. There was a wonderful blend of flavors neither of us had ever tasted before. Even the desert was wonderful. Everything was well prepared and beautifully presented. The only downside was the less-than-attentive, not very friendly... More
