The Japanese word ten can mean “heaven", “above" or “celebration" and the dining experience at TEN modern Japanese restaurant is all of these things.TEN approaches traditional Japanese dishes as if they were works of modern art. The superior ingredients are the building blocks of inspiration and the plates are crafted to please both the palate and the eye. Superior products are used and the seafood arrives daily from fishing auctions in Japan and Hawaii. Beyond the incredibly fresh sushi, the menu features a variety of hot and cold ala carte items and offers many choices for vegetarians as well as non-seafood eaters. The bar menu boasts an extensive list of Sake, carefully selected in conjunction with specialty importers and a prominent Sake sommelier. Ten also features an extensive wine list, and specialty cocktails using unique ingredients such as the “Ten" which is comprised of sake, vodka, aloe juice, and sweet Japanese plums called momokochan. The restaurant's dining room was designed by Formwork of Charlottesville and is divided according to dark and light. The gently lit front room celebrates a twenty foot high ceiling and grand windows to create a space inspired by the night sky. Muted colors diminish perception and create a "boundless" spatial sense. The subtly reflective ceiling panels pick up a shimmering starlight effect from the dimmed “candle" sconces. The "night" space also includes the beverage bar, which is accented with luminous glass tube "bouquets" and other shimmering light effects. Intimate, high backed booth seating adds to the nocturnal mood of this space. The brighter "day" seating area is inspired by air travel, clouds. The sushi bar is rendered as a crisp white box, softened with a warm olive wood. Bright iridescent fabrics highlight the banquette seating and the relatively low ceiling is punctuated by twelve-foot high coffers at varying the "day sky" feeling of the space.

Good Sushi- Expensive

My daughter was super excited to take us to Ten after she had a wonderful experience there with her father. I went in thinking it would be amazing and it was good. The decor was beautiful, although there is a serious flight of stairs you must climb to get there, there was NO elevator. The service... read more

My wife's favorite restaurant in Charlottesville which offers a variety of modern and traditional Japanese cuisine. We both enjoy many of the dishes featured here notably the tempura avocado, various eel dishes, and the specials are always great. When celebrity chefs Anthony Bourdain and Eric Ripert came to town a few years back, they selected

In Cville for business and needed a spot to celebrate my birthday while away from home and was extremely pleased by the high quality sushi, setting, and service at Ten. The extensive sake list was daunting, but Katherine, my server, suggested three wonderful choices for a "flight." They complemented the meal, sushi and sashimi, perfectly. The comp dessert went above... More

I was absolutely blown away by the beauty and decor of TEN when we walked in & I thought, "Wow, this is going to be awesome!" This, however was NOT the case. We sat discussing the extensive (& expensive!) sake selection & decided on something of a little less quality (and expense) because I like my sake served warm. I... More

Although I found the menu a bit limited and the prices on the high side, the food is excellent and the service very good (but - as noted by others - a bit on the inattentive side). I would definitely go back (this was not my first visit).

If you like sushi and your stuck in middle of nowhere Virginia, this is a good place to visit. Visited this place in November with a couple of friends after having a Sushi craving. We ordered a variety of dishes ranging from appetizers to desserts and the overall experience was good. Appetizers: Tried a Ten salad, it was ok, and... More

Diversity of dishes, exceptional cuts of fish and freshness, unbelievable sauces and sushi rice. Felt a little odd given the number of non Japanese/Asian chefs/wait staff and ambiance but don't let that fool you.

This is the only place to get quality sushi in Charlottesville. The service is always provided by professional mature servers who are there for your meal and not as a social outlet for themselves. There are a few things on the menu I actually miss when in NYC, the Losbter Tempura and the shiso plum cucumber rolls. . You must... More

Bit of a disappointment - I understand it's C'ville, but if you're going to charge high quality prices, I expect high quality! Some of the fish was very good, but the Oh-toro was a bit fishy tasting and not worth the $8 price tag per piece. Service was VERY slow - at one point we waited about 25 minutes for... More
