Okay, so it’s a soul food greasy spoon. But for us it was all about the experience and the super friendly staff (and those stewed tomatoes, one of the only veggie-friendly options after corn on the cob). And at least now we can say we’ve been to C-Ville.

The fried chicken was phenomenal! The owner was friendly & engaging & we enjoyed visiting with the regulars, too. We'll definitely return on our next visit to Charlottesville.

This was our second time at Mel's. This place is becoming a tradition every time we come to Cville. Their good is simple but absolutely delicious! Their fried chicken is crispy, juicy and finger lickin good. The owners are so nice. They make you feel welcome.

Wow!! We had a great lunch at this wonderful example of southern cooking. This is a place not to be missed and make sure you go hungry! My family of four had lunch here on a Saturday in August and loved it. Two of us had fried chicken and two of us had open face, hot roast beef sandwiches. For... More

We tried this after seeing the great reviews. Wow was it good! The family is nice and polite, brought our food to us. Even though you order at the counter and we ate outside at the bistro tables we got real plates and forks. I got the fried fish which was a little fishy for me but the rest of... More

From the time you walk in they make you feel welcome. The food was some of the best southern home cooking outside of my mama's kitchen. We had the country ham, BBQ ribs, mashed potatoes, green beans, cabbage, and cornbread. All was delicious. We cleaned our plates. The boys got hamburgers and they were hand patted out. Next trip to... More

We just left Mel's. Stopped here on the way back from DC area. My girls wondered what I'd gotten them into when we first walked in but they were soon impressed with the food and service. We had the mozzarella sticks to start (great value with 8 sticks). My youngest daughter and I had the fried chicken with Mac and... More

Found this place on TripAdvisor and wasn't quite sure what to think. I took a chance and it paid off. The fried chicken was incredible, the macaroni was delicious, and the sweet potato pie was a great way to end the meal. Space is limited inside, but the outdoor seating is great. If you like comfort food, it's worth giving... More

Excellent fried chicken and country sides (pinto beans, cabbage, greens, corn bread) as well as burgers, fries, onion rings. This is a small local GEM not to be missed if you are in Charlottesville and hungry.

My husband and I were very pleased with our experience at Mel ' s. OMG....talk about home style cooking! My husband had the Hamburger w/onions and fried potatoes (awesome) and stewed tomatoes ( just like his momma made) I had the liver w/onions and a must - gravy and the fried potatoes (awesome) and greens.
