The Food was great, the service was excellent. It was a very friendly and inviting environment. I will certainly bring my family to eat at Mel's Cafe again.

Mel's is a great simple soul food joint. We had the fried fish and the fried chicken. Both great and exactly what you want in a place like this. Greens were perfectly done, and my wife loved the simple cabbage. Red Beans and rice for me and it was well done and a good sized portion. Good prices and VERY... More

We had planned to go to a restaurant down the street, but they had just reopened and did not have 90% of their menu available so we looked on TA and found Mel's a few blocks down and decided to stop in. So glad we did!!! We were enthusiastically greeted by Arthur, the owner, Mel's brother, who immediately made us... More

I'm sorry to say we were disappointed with our visit to Mel's. When we were in C'ville, Mel's was rated #1 of 400+ restaurants on TA (AWESOME food, very friendly owner and staff, etc.), so we just had to try it. We tried it on a Monday October afternoon so it wasn't very busy. Like other reviews, the outside leaves... More

OMG!! After reading reviews and talking to people about the best fried chicken in Charlottesville I finally had to take time to try Mel's...without a doubt the best fried chicken I have ever eaten in a restaurant...every thing i ordered ....2 pieces of chicken (your choice), collard greens, mac 'n cheese, roll...tasted as if it came directly from the pot,... I discovered Mel's Café for a late lunch and was immersed in memories of old southern cuisine. Sweet tea, fried chicken, barbeque, corn bread, collard greens, red beans and rice, and other quintessential southern fare are all lovingly prepared and graciously served by the owners in this Charlottesville gem. Any if you're still hungry after the generous portions try the... More

if you love soul food without the frills you have found it. Our fried chicken was awesome! They cook it when you order it, so it's fresh out of the fryer. Service is superb!

We decided to come here given all the good reviews and managed to come on Christmas Eve before they closed for the night. The inside is pretty small, but at least there wasn't a crowd so it wasn't a problem. My sister's omelette was very satisfactory, and the pork chop my mom had was good too. The fried shrimp my... Mel’s Diner in downtown Charlottesville, Va., is a long-standing family-owned business. After reading good reviews of it my husband and I decided to try it on our day trip to the Blue Ridge Parkway via Charlottesville. We were not disappointed. Everything was a la carte so very easy to order. Food was delicious and quite reasonably priced. I don’t mind... More
