The second half of our Labor Day bike-a-thon was dinner at Charles City Tavern. We had been there once before for lunch by happenstance (I have a policy of avoiding I-64 in summer months, so wanted to try Route 5 as an alternate to go between Charlottesville and Hampton Roads) and thought it was pretty good. So when we were... More

The tavern offers great cuisine and uses many local ingredients. Charles City County - despite its moniker - has no city and is very rural. The Charles City Tavern is a welcome oasis to visitors of nearby plantations or travellers on the historic route 5 road between colonial capital of Williamsburg and today's capital of Richmond. If your travels take... More

We had lunch here in between visiting Shirley and Berkeley Plantations. Loved the house and furnishings. The food was typical southern, something we don't know much about being from the west. A little pricy but worth it.

Last week my husband and I decided to go to Charles City Tavern for lunch after running errands. We have been there several times before and it is one of our favorite places in the area. We live in Williamsburg and the tavern is about a 30 minute drive from home. My husband had the crab cake sandwich; I had... More

Stopped here after visiting a local plantation. Our choices were quiche and beet salad along with potato/virginia ham soup with peach cobbler/ice cream for dessert. The quiche had a side salad and fresh fruit. The ice tea was first rate.

Still dreaming about the Virginia Poutine and Fried Green Tomatoes! Truly. Fries were crispy, the savory gravy super tasty, pimento cheese so creamy and the bacon… oh yeah! The breading on the tomatoes was perfect... thin and crispy. And the iced tea - I've never mentioned iced tea in a review - but it was so refreshing and, well, great!... More

I visited the Charles City Tavern while on vacation. Nice weather allowed porch dining, which was rather enjoyable. My husband had jambalaya and I had the shrimp and grits. Both dishes were quite good, as were the homemade rolls and butter. Be sure to stop when you're in the area.

Great food..salads, soups for lunch were extraordinary. This is not far from the Berkeley Plantation..near Petersburgh..but the place is 'remote.'

We loved this place and thought that the atmosphere and the roses blooming were very pleasant. Everyone thought their food was wonderful and we had good service also. We will visit them again next trip.

My husband and I had been to Berkeley Plantation after leaving Williamsburg and were ready to head back to our home in Halifax County. A young woman at the Plantation suggested two nearby restaurants, one of which was the Charles City Tavern. We weren't dressed for fine dining and almost chose the other restaurant but when I reminded my husband... More
