Anniversary

Went there for our anniversary dinner. They had a card waiting for us. We did a small photo shoot in the back which has a beautiful waterfall. The food is amazing, highly recommend having some savory cheeses with your wine either as appetizers or as dessert.

The Waterbury location of Hen of the Wood is very charmingly situated in the basement of an old building off the beaten path. We visited the area for a weekend getaway and were recommended Hen of the Wood by each of our friends so we knew we had to give it a shot. All the ingredients are very local as... More

If you love over salty food, then this is the place for you. Almost every dish tasted like salt. After sending back dishes twice, there was still an overpowering taste of salt. The quality was good but flavor was lost because of the salt excess. You were warned so don't be surprised. I would not recommend this to anybody. Stay... More

I rarely give 5 stars but The Hen deserves it on all accounts. Service, ambiance, cleanliness, staff, menu, food- they all nail it! The atmosphere is cozy, dimly lit with a fireplace on one side near the bar area and open kitchen area with seating if you wanted to watch the chefs. In between are tables and a few booths.... More

Hen of the wood provided one of the very best meals I have ever had in a restaurant . The bread was home made, The cheeses for our appetizer were local and wonderful . The entree was Pork loin that was the best I have eaten and the Brussels Sprouts were full of flavor. Even the drinks were perfect. If... More

We have already given the Burlington iteration of The Hen of The Wood a pretty decent review, noting that it was far too noisy and had not quite met our expectations. I recall that we still awarded the coveted "5 Circles" in recognition of the food and disregarding the irritating (and ill-mannered) din. With family visiting from out of town,... More

When you spend over $75 a person, you expect a little more with regards to food and service. Maybe it is the fact that I dislike food that is drizzled on your plate for effect but is not really what you thought you ordered.

Very friendly; received both an anniversary and birthday card at the table. If you bring an appetite be sure to get both a small and a large entrée. Some patrons used cell phone light to read the menu. Appetizer plate was portioned for 3 at a table of two. Has plenty of free parking.

The Hen of the Wood is now one of my favourite restaurant in Vermont! First of all, the service is impeccable. The maitre d'hotel was really attentive to our needs and the wait staff was delightful. We tried about 6 of the small plates (but the portion were generous!) and each of them was an exploration in taste and freshness.... More
