I wanted to love this place, but...

Named for a large type of mushroom. Beautiful, tiny place in an old mill on a lovely stream and waterfall. Table 41 sits outside, closest to the waterfall, but they do not take reservations for the three tables outside. I wanted to love this place, but left merely liking it. Soup was... read more

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, I'd even say intimate even though the space is not huge. Nestled in front of the Thatcher Brook the building is rich in history. The feel of a restaurant is only a part of the experience and doesn't really matter if the food is no good. This restaurant has it all. Loved the fresh,... More

I love this restaurant Except, the freezing temperature on a cold night at the lower table. One problem is they use the back yard as a fridge but it is not enclosed so the wind blows in and settles in the lower dining room. I would say the temperature was about 50 degrees. Other times have not had this issue.... More

We visited here on a cold winters evening with some good friends. It really is an outstanding restaurant not only in terms of food but also in aesthetics and atmosphere. The varied menu focuses on local and regional produce and does not disappoint and the whole party enjoyed the meal. The wine list also is excellent with a good mixture... More

I recently visited here with some colleagues and a client and was blown away by the food, service and ambience! It's the best restaurant I have been to in all of Vermont . The cheese selections were a terrific way to start and for dinner I had the rabbit special, which was delicious. The only problem we had was trying... More

Had our annual meal here while staying nearby in Stowe. Hen of Wood remains our favorite restaurant in the area. Hangar steak was excellent and skate was a pleasant surprise and outstanding!

Hidden away off the main drag in Waterbury, VT is a re-purposed old grain mill that is now a flourishing and busy fine dining restaurant. The place is quaint and located on a cliff overlooking a stream and waterfalls. This could be the best restaurant in all of Vermont and you need to make reservations well in advance especially during... More

While in Waterbury for New Year's Eve my fiancee and I went here for dinner and truly loved our entire meal! Hen of the Woods has a great upscale menu with homey comforting food that is simple enough not to scare away picky eaters. The decor and service were also great, I would highly highly recommend.

A fine dining atmosphere, great selection of wines, and specials for dinner on a regular basis. Vegetarian dishes were available for a friend which is always important. The cheese selection is VERMONT and quite fantastic. You can sample by different dairies, all of them fabulous! The Lazy Lady, Champlain Creamery, and Jasper Hill are at the top of the list....
