This restaurant raises the bar for fine dining in Burlington. The city has many places for families & students, but always lacked enough special places. The menu is unlike any other, the wait staff knowledgeable & attentive, the wine list has some great suggestions and the atmosphere warm & relaxing. This restaurant is a must if you love new food... On the way back from Quebec we went our of our way to visit Hen of the Wood in Waterbury, VT., since the last time we were there a few years ago and it was great. One of the dishes we were looking forward to was the goat's milk gnocchi. Unfortunately, they seem to have changed the dish. Last time... More

We saw advertisements for this place --- so can imagine our disappointment when we arrived and learned reservations are needed --- two to three weeks in advance!!!! If they are going to advertise --- they should clearly state "reservations only". Never heard of a restaurant advertised only to not be served at all!

Hen of the Wood has been the recipient of lavish praise from the foodie press, so we were anxious to give it a try. The setting in an old mill alongside a cascading brook is inspired and makes a nice location for a special occasion. The service was attentive and competent, and the mood at our table (celebrating a birthday... More

We have been to Hen of the Wood many times over the past years to celebrate our anniversary. We've also been there at other times for a romantic evening. We've always been very happy. This time was a different experience, and the next day we cancelled a second reservation we had made for three nights later. Our waitress was excellent,... More

What a disappointment. Highly recommend we went early to savor the flavors and the environment. Nice location, quickly seated, enjoyed the cheese offerings and then it all went down hill. This place is a prime example of a chef that is caught up in his on hype and has lost sight of what truly matters. Food and service, if the... More

We have been dining at this restaurant for many years. But I doubt we will return after our dinner in mid August, 2014. The ambiance and service were perfect, other than the muddy parking lot and a frustrating inability to read the menu without the flashlights on our iPhones. As a first course I ordered a small plate of beef... More

Wonderful setting along a small river and waterfall in an early 19th century mill building. A true “farm to table” restaurant. Limited but delicious menu. The “window box” table is really special! Artisan cheese selections are great.
