Tastebud delight, great setting and friendly staff

Recommended by a friend we ate here after a long day's hiking and it was superb. We sat outside overlooking a waterfall - there are just 3 tables outside so we were lucky. Hen of the Wood isn’t a restaurant; first and foremost, it's an edible mushroom. Native to certain parts of Japan and North America, it’s becoming more popular in Western cuisine because of its unique flavor, which is a subtle departure from any other in the mushroom family. It avoids the pitfalls of its more famous cousins: a shitake’s heavy heartiness,... More

The standard answer for best fine dining/ farm to table restaurant is always Hen Of The Wood. Even if the food sucked it would be worth going just for the cool atmosphere - but the food is unparallelled. Don't be intimidated by everyone telling you you need a reservation - besides prime time on Friday or Saturday you can find... More

The food was tasty -3 different menu selections all were hot and yummy! It was attached to the hotel so it was convenient after a long drive. The servers were knowledgeable and friendly.

I was thrilled that we finally were able to dine at Hen of the Wood. The charming ambience added to the wonderfully prepared dishes. We started with the heirloom tomato salad and completely enjoyed it. For entrees we ordered the halibut and gnocchi along with two sides. The pole greens and the delicious fried green tomatoes. Every thing was amazing... More

This has always been our all time favorite restaurant. Talked it up above any other restaurant in the country. When we recently ate there I was sadly disappointed to find that the overall deliciousness of the food, the interest of the menu, and so much of what made this restaurant amazing ... was gone. The last time that I ate... More

We had 5 people for dinner here. We were anticipating a much nicer experience because of the reviews. Our waiter did not have patience and wasn't very nice. 2 of us were seated first and the waiter brought a wine that I inquired about (after a 15 minute wait after ordering). He gave a brief description of the wine and... More

We were just looking for simple dinner while stopping overnight in Waterbury. What a great surprise! Lucky they were able to seat us but I would strongly recommend you to reserved! Locally grown and all their produce are for farms in the area. Great wine list and great service! Strongly recommend!!

We absolutely loved this place. The set up is absolutely gorgeous and they welcome you in a nice, calm atmosphere. We absolutely loved the decor and the service was very kind and polite. Couldn't make up our minds so we ended up trying tons of small plates - which we thought was the best idea as it allowed up to... More

By far my favorite place to eat when up in this area! Not sure which is more fabulous, the ambiance or the fresh farm to table food. Make your reservation way in advance!
