I tried this restaurant soon after it opened and was not impressed. A more recent visit, however, showed dramatic improvements. Dishes were well-conceived, skillfully prepared, and knowledgeably presented. Roots now offers a dining experience to match any in Vermont. Farm-to-table is now a cliche in Vermont as a restaurant trend. Unfortunately, the local fare is often served with a healthy... More

I have eaten at Roots several times and have never been disappointed. They get their food from local farmers and markets so everything is fresh. Their dishes are a little different then you would find elsewhere in Rutland but they are always very good and the presentation is awesome too. If your looking to eat healthy this is the place... This restaurant is pretty small and though right in downtown Rutland, I missed it in the past when I drove by. We tried the Sausage and shrimp risotto and the scallop with broccoli rabe, both were excellent and decently priced. Service was also great. We had a good time.

It was a great experience, from the atmosphere to the staff and of course the drinks and food! We are thinking it is only a 2 hour drive up there to go again for dinner sometime. We had the Fried Gnocchi and Maple Shrimp on Sweet Potato Pancake for Appetizers, along with a few drinks. All excellent! I had one... More

We booked for an early dinner on Mothers Day. The service from Maitre'd to waitress was excellent. The food was poor. Beet salad was tasteless, lamb was tough and dessert wired spicing. Overall... Much like Rutland itself, disappointing.

We wood never have found this place without Trip Advisor!!! And, are we glad we did! The tomato soup sounds so good that we decided to have a bowl each and split a salmon sandwich---what a great combination. This is the kind of place you wish you could go back to every day. In fact, it seemed like most of... More

Quaint little place with an exceptional menu. Farm to table. Lamb Ragu was so tender. Steak was very good. Bean salad was interesting, but could have used seasoning. I asked for olive oil, added salt and pepper and that helped immensely. Great find.

An intimate dining experience of innovative locavore cuisine. Classic but with a creative twist. Definitely one of the best farm to table restaurants in a state known for its fresh locally grown food. Lunch and dinner are served. Even on week nights it is best to make reservations. They have an excellent wine menu, feature Vermont microbrewery beers that can... More

We had heard of Roots on other trips to Rutland, and could not get a table on the same day we called. This time we booked two weeks ahead of time. It was worth the wait. Drinks were good, food was awesome. It is very small, so I would think reservations must be mandatory. Definitely a stop on our next... More

My sister and I were looking for a spot for lunch after a visit to the library searching genealogy records in Rutland. We got VERY lucky finding Roots. We couldn't make up our mind so we decided to share the Fondue appetizer and Fish & Chips. The menu claimed they serve fresh local ingredients and we were not disappointed. The... More
