Description: Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own laboratory where food products are grown and created for this particular climate; seasonally, organically, and sustainably. Now imagine restaurants as teaching laboratories this restaurant for instance. NECI on Main is a production lab for New England Culinary Institute. For over 30 years we have been teaching students to make connections with farmers, between the landscape and our food, and between seasons and culinary traditions. Sometimes we include food items that express a particular sense of place from outside of Vermont, or culinary traditions from other cultures, and use those items or experiences to enhance the foods grown here in Vermont. Our menu is no exception in this teaching philosophy, and reflects the best that Vermont’s farmers, and America’s next generation of young chefs offer.

It is always a joy to visit NECI, Vermont's answer to Johnson & Wales or the CIA. Set in the state's capitol, Montpelier, one can always find a nice assortment of food choices, be it for lunch or dinner, or more recently, "small bites" in their bar area. They also have a very nice Sunday brunch for a fairly modest... More

We were really looking forward to our dinner but service and food were both lacking. Bread was brought without bread plates.

A wonderful place to visit. NECI lost some of its flavor when it replaced student servers with hired staff. Yet, the quality of the food is excellent. We enjoy the duck or the "fish of the day." Dinner is always well presented. Pacing is good. The student chefs prepare a nice meal, whatever you order.

Excellent food in a marvelous setting with exceptional service. What a gem of a restaurant that even offers a Chef's table.

We saw NECI described in the AAA guide and decided to try it. It was good that we called ahead for a reservation as they were very busy. The hostess who took our reservation gave us perfect instructions on how to find easy nearby parking on a busy evening. There were many interesting menu suggestions. The ones we picked were... More

We had visited here several years ago and enjoyed it. This time we enjoyed it enough to return the following night as well. The menu is replete with interesting dishes for omnivores as well as vegetarians. Out meat dishes were well prepared, although my pork chop was a little tough. The flavors were well balanced and interesting. They were able... More

Every year my friends and I go to the Vermont Brewers festival in Burlington. On the dive home our tradition is to stop here and have brunch on Sunday. This brunch is one of a kind. As a teacher I love the fact that this is a school and the brunch is staffed by students. Since we come here once... More

This is a different style culinary experience prepared and delivered by culinary students. I can’t say we had the best meal ever, but it was quite good … with exceptions. Ours was a Sunday brunch, and we arrived at 1 PM for service that was offered between 11 AM and 2 PM. What’s special about NECI on Main is that... More

Dear Cherry_Wonderdog, Thank you for taking the time to review your last experience at NECI on Main. I am sorry that the experience was not up to our standard. I assure you that the Students and Chef were working very hard to prepare more food and keep the buffet as full as possible. It is true that we did run... More

The waitress was very friendly. The food was very good. We ordered the MEZZE PLATTER - Red pepper dip, fava bean dip, caponata, roasted almonds, Pita, nigella bread sticks, lavosh. We ordered one of the chicken dishes and a pasta dish. Both Very Good.

Lots of choice, delicious food, different choices, great staff, this restaurant is always a delight as the student staffers work so hard. The food is good and the brunch buffet is good for seeing what they are bring taught.
