Description: Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own...
Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own laboratory where food products are grown and created for this particular climate; seasonally, organically, and sustainably. Now imagine restaurants as teaching laboratories this restaurant for instance. NECI on Main is a production lab for New England Culinary Institute. For over 30 years we have been teaching students to make connections with farmers, between the landscape and our food, and between seasons and culinary traditions. Sometimes we include food items that express a particular sense of place from outside of Vermont, or culinary traditions from other cultures, and use those items or experiences to enhance the foods grown here in Vermont. Our menu is no exception in this teaching philosophy, and reflects the best that Vermont’s farmers, and America’s next generation of young chefs offer.

This is a NECI (New England Culinary Institute) location where students prepare the meals. We had the gazpacho and a salmon club. Delicious! The quality of the food was excellent. If you go, the lunch menu finishes at 2 pm (we made it jus in time, but others who walked in past 2 were turned away.) They have different specials... More

Delightful. We love culinary school restaurants and we're not disappointed (if we were it was only because they were out of the Arctic char.) The turkey kebabs were great and so was the onion pepper soup with clams. Also had the spiced chicken and a flank steak special. All really good. $5 for house cocktails- hard to beat. Good wine... We stopped there for dinner and it was delicious. The staff was great and attended to our every need. Our server was very helpful and courteous. He made it special. The schoo is doing a great job in educating their students. Give it a try!

The trick about this restaurant is you need to catch it at the end of a semester, when the students have learned a fair amount about not only cooking but waiting on tables. At other times you may need to be patient. The food is generally good, there's a nice variety and the menu changes often, and they do a... More

This is a training restaurant for students enrolled at the New England Culinary Institute located on the premises. The menu isn't large but it's creative, featuring ingredients from local farms in a comfortable setting. My husband's salad was fresh but the vegetables noted in the menu title were mundane--tomatoes and a few cucumbers and radishes. My yellow-pepper gazpacho with three... More

July 18 was our fifth visit and the third bad one in a row. I can't believe we gave it yet another chance, but our first two visits had been enjoyable. We also liked the idea of encouraging inspiring food professionals. From the moment we walked in, it was not good. A ditzy front station young woman who apparently had... More

First off the wait staff are all students learning to be chefs. Student chefs don't necessarily make for good waiters. Service was reasonably slow and haphazardly competent but very friendly. They had to run back to get answers to virtually anything we asked, they forgot some of the silverware, made errors on the orders, took forever to bring anything we... More

You will be overwhelmed with their unique and creative dishes!

Stopped here for lunch and glad we did. All the food was very good and well presented. The Gazpacho was outstanding and the chocolate desert is a must. Worth a visit.
