Description: Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own...
Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own laboratory where food products are grown and created for this particular climate; seasonally, organically, and sustainably. Now imagine restaurants as teaching laboratories this restaurant for instance. NECI on Main is a production lab for New England Culinary Institute. For over 30 years we have been teaching students to make connections with farmers, between the landscape and our food, and between seasons and culinary traditions. Sometimes we include food items that express a particular sense of place from outside of Vermont, or culinary traditions from other cultures, and use those items or experiences to enhance the foods grown here in Vermont. Our menu is no exception in this teaching philosophy, and reflects the best that Vermont’s farmers, and America’s next generation of young chefs offer.

Better than Expected

This student-run culinary school restaurant has very good, fairly healthy food. The service is spotty, of course, but so cheerful that all is forgiven. We did not expect to dine so well in Vt.

Came here last night for NYE 2016 buffet. Limited selections, however, the food was incredible. Separate adult and children items. The children's mac & cheese and chicken quesadillas were the best I've tasted. The adult selections included roasted rooted vegetables which were very hearty as well as tasty. The seafood pastry included salmon and shrimp and was fabulous! The breads... More

New England Culinary Institute. A wonderfully varied menu. My wife's Seared Salmon was a large cut, and nicely turned out on a bed of pearl couscous in a lemony sauce. And my Confit of Duck Leg was tender and tasty with some small cut Roasted Vegetables and Mushroom Risotto, a wonderful combination. The Apple Galette looked like too much pastry,... More

We rented the Chef's Table space upstairs from NECI on Main for my son's rehearsal dinner. After about 8:30, we invited folks who were arriving in town for the wedding the next day to stop by, meet and mingle, and have a drink at the cash bar. It was the perfect space for such an event. The staff were very... More

We hosted a group dinner at NECI on Main for a party of 20. The staff did a great job of accommodating our party. We had a private space downstairs which was perfect for our group. This is an ideal location for this size group looking for an upscale casual dinner / meeting space.

While looking for a place to eat on a rainy Sunday in Montpelier we came across the NECI. We decided to give them a try and were glad we did. It turns out they were doing brunch. The restaurant is run by a culinary school with the students cooking & serving. The food and service were excellent. The premises and... More

I wanted to love this place too. Pastries were just okay. Line was slow.... Don't think I'll make it back.

We were hosting relatives from out of town who are used to the many fine dining options of a much larger city. They were very impressed by the quality of the food and liked the atmosphere of the educational environment that NECI provides. They make a point of sourcing food locally wherever possible. Highly recommended. The only small issue is... More

When we travel, we like to support the local economy whenever we can. We previously had a very good experience at a culinary institute restaurant in Alabama and were looking forward to supporting NECI. We were greeted promptly, seated quickly, and had excellent service by Ryan. The stone walls in the dining area provided an air of elegance. The dinners... More

We ate lunch here on a Tuesday at 1:30. We waited an hour to get our food. My burger was ordered medium. It was delivered raw in the middle and burned on the outside. There were drips of blood on my plate from the first few bites, and powdered charcoal on my lips. When the waitress came to ask about... More

I am so sorry to hear of this experience, by no means is this NECI on Main's standards. I truly do appreciate your feedback and this will be addressed. We are a culinary school that runs a restaurant, with students cooking in the kitchen. With this said we have Executive Chef's in the kitchen teaching the students so that all... More
