Description: Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own...
Imagine the entire state of Vermont as a food experiment or as its own laboratory where food products are grown and created for this particular climate; seasonally, organically, and sustainably. Now imagine restaurants as teaching laboratories this restaurant for instance. NECI on Main is a production lab for New England Culinary Institute. For over 30 years we have been teaching students to make connections with farmers, between the landscape and our food, and between seasons and culinary traditions. Sometimes we include food items that express a particular sense of place from outside of Vermont, or culinary traditions from other cultures, and use those items or experiences to enhance the foods grown here in Vermont. Our menu is no exception in this teaching philosophy, and reflects the best that Vermont’s farmers, and America’s next generation of young chefs offer.

Always excellent food

Food is always top notch at NECI. This visit, the draft beers weren't available but other than that, food was excellent.

You know those hair academy places with the cheap cuts? Here, its student experimentation at full price! The service was really slow. My arctic char was drowned in some kind of liquid, without nearly enough (any?) advertised leeks, and no flavor - I had to add salt & pepper. The two tiny potato halves were undercooked. There was a "duck... More

If you think that the food is prepared by students, the instructors are doing a great job. Nicely plated and well balanced entrees.

While on our way to Burlington, we decided to stop in Montpelier for a look around. While walking up and down the streets, we happened to see NECI on Main and thought we'd try it for lunch. The dining room is very attractive and comfortable. Enjoyed the light fixtures over the bar that featured kitchen gadgets such as funnels and... More

We enjoyed our evening - starting with coctails downstairs at a warm, welcoming bar - followed by a nice meal and good service upstairs in the quiet ( while quite busy) and lovely dining room.

Three generations my family went here for my mom's 80th birthday. The service was a little slow but it is a teaching restaurant so we were ok w/ it. The food and drinks were good - no complaints. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. The kids liked being able to watch the kitchen in between courses.

four of us -- one of the main hot courses was cold. all the food looked thrown together. the wait was incredibly long. no one liked what he/she ordered. it was not busy, but the service was still terrible. food was worse than mediocre.

My husband treated me to a birthday dinner at NECI on Main in Montpelier, Vermont. The food was great and the setting is very pleasant. The waiter we had was wonderful about explaining terms on the menu that I wasn't familiar with. We found the prices to be reasonable for food prepared on premises and not, like chain restaurants, frozen... More

I really enjoyed the cozy atmosphere of the downstairs. It felt like I was eating in someone's living room. I knew this was a training school so set my expectations accordingly. Even still, I have no complaints about service. The menu had a nice variety and was quite flavorful. My companion ordered the chickpea fries for a starter which came... More

I think I already reviewed this place. Most expensive place in town. Training facility for a "Cooking School" The food is about the most expensive in town. The students make average to crappy food and the Managers push it out of the kitchen. Locals don't eat there. Save you $$$$$; stay away.
