This is a gorgeous old house with character. There are two parts to this restaurant. The front of the house is fine dining and the back Max's Tavern. We have dined at both and they both have beautiful food. Open fires, great service and atmosphere. We will return.

I've eaten at Barnard Inn (Max's Tavern) several times. The owner and chefs produce great and interesting flavors. They also have local music occassionally which is a great way to spend a Saturday night.

We were staying down the road at the Maple Leaf Inn and rather then go into Woodstock for the first night decided to eat here in the tavern section. Staff was very friendly and attentive, they did forget to place my order to the kitchen, admitted fault and got it out to me within a very reasonable time. Mistakes are... More

I live in Woodstock and due to working at home often intensely I feel a need to go out for dinner, at least once a week. I go to Pi, Angkor Wat, and Worthy often. Sometimes I drive 15 minutes north to the Barnard Inn Restaurant. It has a charming ambience, the dishes are fine, the other customers are largely... More

We were visiting the area and the B&B we were staying at recommended this restaurant for dinner. The inn is kind of in the middle of no where and we weren't really sure what to expect. We are so glad we took the advice and made the drive. The food was excellent (we got the pot roast and lamb sliders),... More

The quality of the food at our dinner at the Barnard Inn was excellent. However, the kitchen service was quite slow and charging $5 for ordinary bread was unusual which made the overall experience just average.

We liked the approach, the grounds etc. We found the atmosphere in the Tavern not appropriate to the prices on the menu. The food was just soso, not bad, but not excellent. Felt like we were being rushed. Was handed the check and was told I could take a quick look. Usually I do not study the bill, but after... More

Stopped in Max's with our 2 children before the Street Dance. They obviously don't care for family patrons. We weren't made aware of any kid friendly dishes or offerings. It took at least 10 minutes for our waitress to come by. Our drinks were delivered after our meal. The butter for our $5 loaf of bread took so long the... More

Just called in for an evening meal and was totally impressed with the quality of the food. Much of it was sourced locally. It was beautifully prepared and delicious. I had the vegetarian option which I would highly recommend.

We had the good fortune to eat dinner here on our recent trip to Woodstock, VT. A local recommended it. All the ingrdients are very fresh (farm to table) and the portions are generous. The food was perfectly prepared and delicious. Our family of four enjoyed the pork chop, steak, bolagnese and tortellini dishes. Wow- it was superb. To top... More
