Pleasant Surprise

This place has a surprisingly good variety of selections on the menu when you consider you are in desolate West Texas. The salads and burgers have always been great. Most menu items have been good or great. I do not recommend the shrimp appetizer. The shrimp were just not tasty. Hopefully they will... read more

Have visited here before and had a great meal as stated in previous review. This was a Monday night and maybe and off night , but was not a good night. Service was good, salad was very good as was the bread. However the fried steak , gravy , & mashed potatoes let me down. The steak was mostly the... More

Didn't get eat! When we asked the woman at the desk about the restaurant she didn't even look up. Just said "closed, only open 5-10." Not what I call west Texas hospitality.

We had great expectations based on all the prior reviews and the charm of this old hotel/inn but that's where it all ended as everything went downhill upon entering the restaurant on this busy Monday evening. No one greeted us or said to sign our names on a waiting list until 10 minutes of standing between the door and bar.... More

Visiting Van Horn, TX and not stopping at El Capitan Hotel would be the equivalent of missing a piece of history. Not only the location is superb, also the charm of the building together with the atmosphere is fantastic. Service was outstanding and the food delicious.

I asked the waitress what there "specialty" was. She told me and I ordered it....What a mouth watering dinner!!! Not sure the correct name on the menu but it was a sirloin coated in crushed pistachio nuts/light breading, quik deep fried and served over real mashed potatoes with a white jalapeno gravy and I had green beans with mine (they... I wish TA would add a rating "good" because it is neither average nor very good. The staff is friendly, we had a good meal of chicken with decent wine, nothing pretentious, prices are reasonable and the room is nicely decorated and has a bar. It is also very convenient that the restaurant is part of the hotel where we... More

We got the cheese fries for a snack and got pretty filled up. The bar service was decent. Later in the evening we got the bacon cheeseburger which I thought was very good but the hubby didn't enjoy it as much. He also got the pecan pie which he did not enjoy. I've eaten there one other time and enjoyed... More

This is a small restaurant which is in the hotel. I had the rib eye steak and my wife had the salmon with risotto and green beans. I had the baked potato and Greek salad. My steak was $33. The food was good but not outstanding. For example, my steak was cooked on a flat grill, not a charbroiler. They... More

After driving for almost 10 hours from Dallas, we were starving and thrilled to find the El Capitan Restaurant. I had the salmon and an excellent glass of Chardonnay. The food was perfectly prepared. The service was excellent and the place was spotless.
