Wow!!

Pulled into this dusty west Texas town around 8pm on a Saturday night with my kids while driving home from Colorado. Greeted by a very warm and inviting staff. Dining room seems formal, but attitude is laid back and there is no dress code. Food is delicious!! My daughter had a pasta dish and... read more

When one discovers a restaurant whose cuisine is perfect you start to think that a 7 hour drive to this restaurant from our home is not so long for such an incredible dinner. On the last night of our nearly 6,000 mile road-trip we decided to spend the final night in the small hamlet of Van Horn, Texas at the... More

We were staying at the El Capitan hotel so we tried the restaurant as it is in the hotel but you cannot charge your meal to your room for some reason. The decor and service was very good but the food is not what you expect in deep west Texas and may not be for everyone. They have a somewhat... More

Stopped for dinner on the way home from Galveston in Van Horn Tx. Van Horn is a small west Texas town with little to offer on a late Sunday evening, then we saw the El Capitan Hotel with Restaurant. What a delightful place, it's an old remodeled hotel and restaurant. The menu offered some high priced items that surprised us... More

The food is excellent--very creative! The prices are reasonable and the service was great--very helpful and described items well and accurately. The ambiance is a little dull and dated--it is what kept this from getting a higher rating...that and the very loud train noise!!!!

Good environment, fountains outside, etc. Varied menu covers most every basic. Bar is attached. Can eat at bar or at tables.

This restaurant is in an old historic hotel. Part of the restaurant was an old bank. The old vault is behind the bar and now holds the liquor. They were a little understaffed while we were there, but she was perky and friendly and hustling, so we didn't mind. I ordered the pistachio crusted fried steak with jalapeno white gravy.... More

El Capitan was an excellent choice for an excellent meal. Had the Wild Salmon - perfect! They even have local brewed beer on tap.

We stayed in Van Horn before traveling to Carlsbad Caverns the next day. There is not much in Van Horn, but this place is a gem in the desert. I opted for the rib eye steak and it was the most delicious steak I had on our 19 day journey. My wife had a pasta dish that she said was... More

Heading east on I-10 with an overnight in Van Horn Texas. We wanted a local place for dinner and based on reviews selected El Capitan. No need to dress up even though the dining room features real cloth napkins and white tablecloths! Lovely historic hotel and restaurant featuring good service and atmosphere. We split the Ribeye steak because it was... More
