Surprise and good food

The staff was great and Texas-style friendly. The chicken fried steak with cream gravy with small pepper flakes was outstanding. The taco appetizer was enough for a meal. The dessert of the day had an unusual twist but was a tasty treat. The plce to stop in Van Horn.

A strange mixture. Real tablecloths and napkins, but then the wine is served in a plastic glass... Food is okay but in no way outstanding, the restaurant itself has a nice atmosphere and décor, staff friendly.

My friend and I went here for dinner on our way through town. The service was awesome, drinks were well poured and the food was great. I had the pistachio fried steak, the jalapeño gravy was excellent. My friend had the Chicken Florentine with the "best bow-tie pasta", very very tasty!

Road tripping through Van Horn, Texas, I fully expected to be eating fast food tonight, but thanks to others on Tripadvisor I tried the El Capitan Hotel. What a wonderful surprise. The Pecan encrusted steak with mashed potato and jalapeno gravy was wonderful. And the house made pecan pie with locally grown pecans was also great. (I was so full... More

We stayed at the hotel and it was wonderful to walk downstairs for dinner. My husband had the chicken fried steak with jalapeño gravy, and he said it was excellent. I had shrimp pasta dish which was very good. Our server was very good, personable but not worrisome...a winning combination. We met a couple that had just come in to... More

Pushed on through from El Paso and it was worth it. Nicer, quiet town helps make the extra push past El Paso worth it. This hotel is nicer than the chains but the rooms are small. Old, refurbished building adds quaintness to the stay. Didn't eat there as we got in too late but the bar scene was still active... More

We stayed at the hotel and decided to come downstairs for a bite. I had read some reviews about the pistachio fried steak being so good. After browsing the menu, I decided to try it myself. DANG! That steak and the jalapeno gravy were THE BOMB! It came with 3 spears of asparagus and mashed potatoes. I had forgotten about... More

Pulled into this dusty west Texas town around 8pm on a Saturday night with my kids while driving home from Colorado. Greeted by a very warm and inviting staff. Dining room seems formal, but attitude is laid back and there is no dress code. Food is delicious!! My daughter had a pasta dish and the look on her face said... More

When one discovers a restaurant whose cuisine is perfect you start to think that a 7 hour drive to this restaurant from our home is not so long for such an incredible dinner. On the last night of our nearly 6,000 mile road-trip we decided to spend the final night in the small hamlet of Van Horn, Texas at the... More

We were staying at the El Capitan hotel so we tried the restaurant as it is in the hotel but you cannot charge your meal to your room for some reason. The decor and service was very good but the food is not what you expect in deep west Texas and may not be for everyone. They have a somewhat... More
