I took my wife here for Valentine's Day weekend. I wanted to surprise her. Since we live just a few miles up the road I knew she would never expect this. Even though the Sunday House is just a small cottage the coziness of the setup is perfect for a couple looking to get away from the hustle and bustle... More

On Thursday, Nov 13, 2014, a group of docents from Chestnut Square Historical Village in McKinney, TX, were visiting Van Alstyne, and had made reservations here. The menu was somewhat limited, as they had already run out of baked potatoes, but the food was still delicious. Four of our group had the lunch sampler, the other three had the grilled... More

We rented the B&B for a weekend retreat. I had eaten at the restaurant years ago and found it charming, so I was disappointed to open the door to the Main House to a strong musty, old odor. We also rented the Sunday House -- and the odor was not bad there. At the main house, it was bad enough... More

We were traveling to Tulsa and wanted to find a place to eat lunch. THIS is the place. We had the chicken spaghetti lunch special, which came with an excellent spinach, mandarin orange and strawberry salad (poppy seed dressing). Then for dessert we shared a piece of spectacular coconut creme pie. Wow! All this for not much more than you... More

I visit the restaurant for lunch as often as possible. Its a quaint little setting with real down hom cooking. I usually get whatever they have foe the special that day (very reasonably priced at around 8 bucks) and have not been disappointed. Chicken Ritz is probably my favorite. The special comes with a poppyseed dressing that is wonderful.

Intimate. Food quality is great and so is the staff. They have a unique menu every day with something for men with hearty appetites and women that may want something light.

There is really nowhere else to stay in the tiny town of Van Alstyne, but The Durning House is a little gem. The Sunday cottage is a little house, decorated to be comfortable and homey. With all kinds of extra touches and special items to make your stay nice. I was a little dissappointed that the "breakfast" part of my... More

This restaurant specializes in ladies' lunches -- crisp salads and lighter fare. There is also a casserole or heavier hot dish for those craving something more substantial. Everything tastes homemade. There's a "special of the day" chalkboard and when it's gone, it's gone. I choose the special on my visit and had a spinach-strawberry salad with homemade poppyseed dressing, avocado-chicken... More
