Pleasant surprise for such a remote area

We unexpectedly drove through Strawn due to stormy weather and ended up at Mary's on a Saturday night at 8 p.m. We got right in and were served quickly. DH and I split the medium Chicken fried steak meal ($15) and along with a side of fried okra it was plenty. The gravy was delicious!

My husband has talked about this place for years. Finally, he got another couple to go with us and experience the great chicken-fried steak. It was everything I had been told. I got the large size and it covered the entire plate. The sides were also larger than those who got the medium and small CFS plates. I ended up... More

Terrific chicken fry with real homemade gravy. Monday night is all you can eat chicken fry for less than the price of a medium. The large is for serious eaters only!!

I have been going to Mary's Café since the early 1990s. It is recognized far and wide as the best chicken fried steak around. Many drive miles 40-50-60 to eat CFS when possible. I know people from Muleshoe to east Texas that when driving near Strawn, Texas make it I point to stop and eat. Mary's has grown in size... More

Strawn Texas is a long way from anywhere, but the food is worth the drive. We both had the Chicken Fried Steak (small) dinner which includes Texas toast, salad with choice of dressing and baked potato or French fries. Sizing is small is half a medium and medium is half a large. Large is too big for most. Steak was... More

Best chicken fried steak I have ever had. The gravy is the real deal. This spot is a little out of the way (north of interstate 20), but more than worth the stop.

Had to try their chicken fried steak, which was enormous - $17 for the large order. We shared the plate and had one portion leftover. It was tasty but not great, the coating was not the normal crusty one for fried chicken; it was probably coated lightly so it could be fried on top of the hot flat metal grill.... More

The chicken fried steak is their staple, and it is really good. AND HUGE!! but what's undersold there are their cheese enchiladas. Very very good! I always opt for the plate with the chicken fry AND enchiladas haha. I live an hour away, but it is worth the drive. Good food - don't let the decor (or lack thereof) or... More

This is definitely CFS done right - very much reminds me of my moms. You can tell it is good quality beef, hand tenderized, breaded just right and skillet fried. This is so far from the freezer to deep fryer that some places call chicken fried steak. The gravy was perfect - it was heavily seasoned, so don't salt &... More

I like CFS with a slightly crisp, slightly crunchy batter. Not too crisp or too crunchy, just a bit. Mary's crust lacks that snap. Yes, it gets down to that level of ridiculous personal-preference nit-picking. Mary's CFS is that good. A real piece of meat, tenderized by pounding, battered and served with a bowl -- yes a BOWL, like hungry... More
