I have been going to the Root Cellar for years. Over the years the food has evoked from simply pretentious faux gastro pub to a wonderfully eclectic menu that is diverse in its offering, yet true to its theme. This is a close as you will get to a true locavore restaurant. The vegetarian menu goes beyond salads and offers... More

This is a long time local favorite in San Marcos and an excellent choice as there are not that many good / nice restaurant choices in San Marcos. We ordered a bottle of wine while we waited for our table, they were very accommodating. Salads were good with a delicious dressing, we had the salmon with veggies and wild rice... More

Parking was horrible because of construction but the food was excellent. A little loud for my taste, but for a younger crowd it is a perfect spot.

We had just flown in to Austin and we were looking for someplace with unique, fresh food. The Root Cellar Cafe in San Marcos hit the mark. It was a few minutes drive off the freeway but well worth the detour. We ordered the Grilled Tilapia Cakes with Russian Dill Sauce to start - very tasty. The herb-custed salmon atop... More

Best place I've found in San Marcos to eat. The lunch menu has lots of gluten free options, and the dinner menu has even more. Have a glass of Root 1 Cabernet with dinner, yum!

Very good food. It is a very noisy restaurant so be prepared. The ceiling are quite low. Our server was very professional. The food was excellent. The only odd thing was the amount of purple onions put in every dish. We wondered if they had over ordered onions and needed to use them up. The bread pudding was amazing as... More

Everything that we ate was extremely good, even my kids ate everything. I got the Cellar burger and I was amazed at how good pesto was on a burger, I would have never thought to put those together. Their chips are some of the best restaurant made chips I've ever had! we couldn't get enough. The one thing to be... More

I see Root Cellar is #3 ranked in San Marcos, but my brunch experience left me colder than the migas I was served at brunch saturday. Other dishes on other tables looked good - the club sandwich and the hamburger on the table next to us both looked really good. But, we started with chips and salsa - not complimentary.... More

Was my first time to the root cellar in San Marcos. As I run a local hotel we decided to use them as our cater for an up coming employee event. So, I wanted to try it out. It's downtown in the basement of one of San Marcos' older buildings. It's very interesting and unique! Didn't have to wait long... More

I loved the atmosphere, its cozy makes you want to have a long lunch. I got the holy aioli that my waiter recommended and it was amazing. He also recommended the mash potatoes as a side they were just as unique and amazing as the sandwhich. Service was great.
