The only reason we go here is because my husband loves the oysters with the shrimp on top. When we were there, they had no oysters at all! They "ran out"! So, we tried to order their cheese bread with shrimp on it, but they took that off their menu! We were stuck with other selections none of which were... More

In the middle of nowhere, you will find beautiful oysters. Fresh shucked are good, but they are known for their Oysters Gilhooley's - butter, parmesan cheese, salty oyster, all roasted/grilled on a pit (I'm guessing, as I've never seen the pit, but that's what the oyster shell looks like to me). Anyway, whenever I get the chance, I go. Heck,... More

Normally I would never rate a restaurant excellent unless it qualified in all respects...food, decor, service. This was our first time here but we were drawn to this "ultimate seafood dive" by Zimmern's rave reviews and it is the food that stands out so over and above anything we have had so far that rates an excellent. This place is... More

I've been driving by, well within five miles, of this place for years. I love oysters on the half shell and have driven 100+ miles to find them. I wonder why I never found Gilhooley's before (doh!!). I stumbled on it from watching the Bizarre Food Show guy on t.v. and decided to drive up from Galveston were we were... More

You will never find your way to this "joint" without a trip advisor review or a local guide. Do not let that influence you because their roasted oysters are worthy of a special trip. Break with tradition- or their version of it- and try the roasted oysters with shrimp on top. You won't be sorry unless of course you don't... More

We've been here a couple of times. It never disappoints. Try the oysters Gilhooly. The loaded bread is also a must have. Don't let the appearance scare you away. This is a great place.

Your grandmother won't understand, unless she is covered in tattoos and smokes Marlboros. The place is falling apart, but has the greatest outdoor seating area. You will sit in the company of bikers, criminals, oil workers, and drunks. I have been going for years. I'd probably go daily if it were closer. It's on a remote section of Galveston bay... More

It's the food that makes Gilhooley's worth it, and then only during good weather so one can sit outside on the relaxing patio under a shady ceiling of trees away from the thick layer of cigarette smoke inside. Why? Because it is a decrepit restaurant with questionable cleanliness that takes only cash and no children. The prices have risen dramatically... More

Even if you are a fresh oyster lover, you probably have not ever had them BBQd; at least I hadn't. Our son and I started with a dozen spicey shrimp oysters and a dozen regular, ol' oysters, BBQd on the half-shell. We had to order a half dozen more of each. My wife doesn't like oysters that much, so she... More
