Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

We lucked out with a shorter than expected wait for a table. We had a great waitress and enjoyed the Christmas decorations. We anticipated a nice steak dinner and were taken by surprise with the first bites. The steaks were cooked perfectly and looked amazing. When we put those amazing looking bites in our mouths, we were dismayed to find... More

This place is over run with people but after you have been here you will see why. The rustic appearance and beautiful decorations give the restaurant a great atmosphere. The wait staff are good and can handle the crowd quite well. We had a party of nine and every thing went on schedule. I had the bronze catfish and it... More

I love the view overlooking the Guadalupe. The servers are nice and quick. The burgers are delicious. Get there early to avoid waiting and to snag the best views.

The food is great and the price is reasonable. The restaurant has a lot of seating inside and outside. On the weekends it usually gets packed so going to eat early in the evening is a good idea. I had a ribeye steak and it was very good. It is only a few feet from the Gruene Dance Hall and... More

We ate at the Gristmill last night. It was probably my fourth or fifth time there, and it just gets worse every time. This time it was to celebrate my MIL's 80th birthday and for some reason she really likes it, so we went (a big group). We waited an hour for a table. That's fine, except the system they... More

Stopped by on a Sunday afternoon. Very busy, but they get through the lines quickly. Had the daily special (pulled pork), plentiful, tasty, good value.

This is a restaurant to visit for the charm and uniqueness of the place, even if the food was so-so. But don’t worry, the food is delicious. The experience begins as soon as you arrive because this establishment does such a huge business it often ushers thousands of diners through the process. After check in you wait in a courtyard,... This is a restaurant we have experienced in the past and our recent visit only reinforced why we come back. The food, atmosphere and service is excellent. The portions are generous and the prices are not too high. We were there for Gruene Market Days so the crowds were large but we were able to get a table for two... More

No matter what season you visit Gruene you will want to eat at the Gristmill for the ambiance alone! In the winter they have huge fires lit and in the summer you can sit out on the many patios! It is a wonderful experience and the food is pretty tasty as well! However, the best part of the Gristmill is... More

We were in town for a long weekend so went here for dinner. I'd heard about the gristmill for years but had never been myself. It was rustic with good food. My husband and I shared the 12oz tenderloin which was more than enough for us. It was very tender and flavorful. A definite must if you're in town.
