Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

Great Food!!!

This is an amazing place to eat! Unique and fun. We sat outside and listened to music before we got our seat to eat. I loved the way the restaurant is decorated, rustic and fun. And the chicken fried steak was huge!!! We took half of it home.

I like the Gristmill, but only in the cooler months. We waited an hour to be seated. Then once we were seated on the 2nd floor, sweat was running down my face and back. No ceiling fan above our table. I couldn't wait to get out of there. The service was sub-par. The menu is average, nothing amazing. Our table... More

We had friends with us who had never been to New Braunfels, and we were next door at Gruene Hall so we decided to take them here. Always a great view of the river while munching on traditional wurst wedding sausage.

We thought we were just having lunch at a local tourist attraction so we were presently surprised by the very good food, great service and reasonable prices. We had a table riverside and so enjoyed it that we had a second beer after lunch just to soak up the atmosphere. I should mention we were having a late lunch because... More

We always have a good time here, and the food is excellent! Reserve a table overlooking the Guadalupe River for a great view while you are eating. The restaurant is in an old gristmill. They have done an excellent job converting it into a restaurant. The waitstaff is excellent, as well. If you are in Gruene, definitely eat here!

Great food, great service, great atmosphere in the old grist mill buildings. Quite possibly the best fried shrimp in south Texas!!

I loved this restaurant, the history of the building, the river view, and the historic setting with the dance hall, general store, etc. We arrived at an off hour and were seated immediately, though I understand it is quite busy at peak hours. Our favorites were the fried catfish, a large serving, and a very good, large, hamburger. The service... More

This is a neat place to visit. Plan to set outside as most of the seating is outside. We ordered the hamburger, it was a good size and it was pretty good. It was very crowded so we were not able to set near the river but I would suggest that you ask to set near the river if you visit.... More

This place is a must... great food, great location- so much to look at and see. Kids got the grill cheese and chicken fried steak- they loved it. The fries are potatoes- so the kids thought they were weird at first because they didn't look like "French fired"... I had the Acapulco Chicken- very very good. And the queso is... More

We visited here on a girls weekend, and we love this place, we visit every time we come to Gruene. There was a group of 12 of us and we were seated rather quickly. Service was great (our server was Tyler). Food as always was great. I had the filet bacon wrapped with fried potatoes. Everyone's food was yummy, from... More
