Description: Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

We had lunch here on an unusually cold day. We were seated by the large brick fireplace which was cozy and warm. This was our first visit to the Mill, an old historic cotton gin. The grounds are quite pretty and there is a lot of outdoor seating, although not today! The place was extremely busy. Amazingly large restaurant. We... More

Have eaten here before and was pleased. Not the case this time. Started with Jalapeno Poppers that were a horrid frozen penny pincher brand with neon red peppers, plain cream cheese, and flavorless breading. Were not even hott when served. I got a Seared Tuna Salad. The Tuna was not defrosted properly amd wasn't seasoned except for being so fishy... More

Our large group has made coming to The Gristmill a yearly tradition - The Klaberheads band plays at the Wurstfest and then heads over for a fancy celebration meal to unwind before the trip home. They don't take reservations, but always find a table for 18 people with no problem - this place is HUGE! It has an amazing outdoor... More

I took my 2 friends to the Gristmill for lunch during our road trip from Dallas to San Antonio. It was a beautiful day in November. We arrived around noon and it was a bit crowded. We had to park a couple of blocks away and wait 30 minutes to be seated but it was worth the wait. They accommodated... More

I am a local but 20 years before I was I ate here...Moved from Gulf Coast to here and was suprised to find the shrimp awesome...So my order is always shrimp, Gruene beans, and the small onion rings with prime sauce and ranch. I have a favorite table on the lower deck for summer and in front of the fireplace... More

Food here is nothing to write home about, same is true for the service. This place is always packed, due to it's location. We were there as a party of five and service was painfully slow, especially after we waited about 90 minutes for a table. Food arrived hot, but not with a lot of flavor. There are many better... Loved the catfish filets and I am picky about my catfish. Wonderful taste and not greasy! We also tried the tender pulled pork sandwiches with their cole slaw and onion rings. Deliciious!!!! Both visits our waitresses were great! Also, one day was rainy and cold and we were seated next to a fireplace. Very nice!

Ate here as part of a large party. Service was average, seemed to wait longer than needed for orders, and when it did arrive the sides were cold. Main course of BBQ ribs was excellent. Given the large group I would try again as staff was generally friendly and I believe the food to be above average.

This has become an important visitors restaurant be we locals eat there also. It has grown a great deal since it first opened. Two reasons: great food and location. If the locals will eat there you know it is good.
