Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

Great food, great location

This is one of my favorite places to eat when in the hill country of Texas. Now it's actually in Gruene, Texas not New Braunsfels so don't make that mistake. The food is plentiful, try the onion rings, but caution, they are donut size!

Destination restaurant for years. Can't go wrong with the chicken fried steak! There is a line during peak periods, but if you can't get there early have a cocktail and roam the beautiful grounds.

We had another great meal! This place is so efficient. It is huge but it doesn't seem that way. There are so many layers to the deck, that there is always a good seat outside. Neat place!

The food at the Grist Mill is very good. The steaks are cooked with very good flavor, but a little pricey. The Guadalupe chop steak is an exception. It has a very savory kick on the hot side, definitely worth trying is you like spicy food. Don't forget to save room for desert, the strawberry short cake is huge. Garlic... More

We live in New Braunfels and Gristmill is always a reliable choice for great casual dining. The restaurant is beautiful and we especially love visiting when the weather is cooler and the fires are roaring. All the food s delicious. My wife is obsessed with the baby back pork ribs at the moment which are cooked to perfection and fall... More

This restaurant is very popular, so there is frequently a wait to get in. It was an unusual way to wait, too. You give your name to the hostess, then wait in an outside area that had plenty of benches. You can order a drink from the outside bar to drink while you wait. There is a huge chalkboard outside.... Long Time Favorite for over 20 years - Never Disappoints. Great atmosphere, great food, and great service. My favorites are: baby back ribs (not on the menu - you have to ask if they have ribs available), fried shrimp, and chicken fried steak.

Great atmosphere and great food at reasonable prices. A must-stop if you're in the area. It can get very crowded so think about going for an early dinner.

We always stop and eat the Gristmill when we come to New Braunfels. We love to eat outside by the river, The steaks are outstanding.
