Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

We tried to stop on Sunday but couldn't find a parking space because of the Gruene Market Days. We went back on Tuesday and were not disappointed. The staff was very friendly and the atmosphere was laid back and casual. We chose to eat outside and got a table overlooking the river about 3 or 4 stories up even though... More

On a recent trip to San Antonio we stopped in Gruene, TX which is just outside New Braunfels. We have been here many times before and love to eat here. This restaurant is in an old gristmill that has been converted to a restaurant. It is a historic building and is very unusual. It is a huge restaurant so the... More

Gristmill is conveniently located next door to Gruene Hall. It's convenient since after downing a nice cold Lone Star the next stop should be chilling on the patio with a Strawberry Wine Cooler in hand. They have an assortment of typical Texas fare which could be found most places, however they don't have the ambiance or those wine coolers. Start... More

We happened on this town on our way from Austin and San Antonio. What a find. The first stop on the career of George Strait. Learned something new. This restaurant ant is located behind the towns famous water tower and is 3 floor high and with a porch right on the river. It was chilly on our day and fire... More

food is great! And so is the atmosphere. It is a little pricy but definitely worth it. Great for family, friends, or just a couple

Stopped in to Gruene with kids and the grandparents during a festival weekend in the fall. Though crowded in town, we were seated outside without a long wait. The food was really good and the atmosphere was nice. The bench seats were a bit rickety on the uneven floor but we managed. The kitchen was able to accommodate our medical... More

My husbands and I were sat promptly. We had a great outdoor seat overlooking the River. The appetizer of sausage was huge with nice side of german mustard, onions and pickles. I had the tortilla soup, and my husband had the tomatillo chicken. The food was good, hot, and served quickly. This is a touristy spot that serves consistent food... More

We have been here many times and never disappointed. Good menu, food, and service. I don't think they take reservations so may be a wait in summer but worth it. They usually have entertainment outside. Have a drink & relax while waiting.

Food was just ok. Service was decent. Prices are high. Not really worth it even with the fun atmosphere.
