Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

Great Atmosphere

Great place to relax and enjoy a good meal. Be prepared for a crowd...Traffic to and from the Gristmill was horrific!

We ordered the chicken salad sandwich and when it arrived we looked at each other because of the size it could have made another sandwich each. It was great, the restaurant is an open aired old Grist mill. Very large in accomodations. The wait staff were friendly and fast.

Have visited many times over the years, and never had a bad meal. This time, a grilled chicken salad, which was delicious and a generous serving. My wife had salmon, friends had steak salad, and all were very good. Good waitstaff, and moderated prices. Hard to beat.

A lovely, rustic restaurant with tiered deck over the Guadalupe River. Great menu selection & specials for lunch. The pulled pork sandwich came with coleslaw & huge onion rings the size of bangle bracelets! Delicious! Others enjoyed catfish, chicken fried steak, & sausage. Amazing, restful views & surrounding gardens. Explorer the General Store, antique shop & other downtown sights.

The food, the excellent service and great prices get better and better. Portions are ample, selection is varied, something for everyone. The ambience is great and you won't be disappointed.

Always busy and there's a reason for that. Great food, fantastic patio's. Chicken Fried Steak is one of the best. My favorite is the poblano pasta salad! Great place to even just stop and have a cocktail and people watch.

Fancying a day out from San Antonio we venture to the village of Gruene and it was such a pleasant surprise. Amongst the several small shops there was this delightful restaurant and our meal under the trees looking down on the river was beautiful.

Great place to eat. The outdoor setting is fantastic. Right on the river, shaded tables. Very good customer service. And the food was amazing!
