Situated on a bluff overlooking the Guadalupe River, this spectacular restaurant nestled under the shade of towering oak trees has been the perfect getaway for a unique casual dining experience for thirty years. Located in the historic district of Gruene just beneath the famous Gruene water tower, we opened in 1977, serving steaks and hamburgers from a tiny kitchen in the corner of the building. Our menu still features thick steaks and large hamburgers, but the restaurant also serves up popular South Texas fare like chicken fried steak, fried catfish, grilled chicken, enormous sandwiches, fresh fish and special dishes like tomatillo chicken and bronzed catfish. Fudge pie, the enormous strawberry shortcake and our signature Jack Daniel's Pecan Pie are famous desserts. A full bar with a good wine list and fresh squeezed lime margaritas are also big hits.

Still wish they had AC!

Wonderful place, excellent food, friendly staff...but it gets HOT!!! Out of town family members came with us...my FIL, who is very picky, was quite amazed by the quality and efficiency. Had a great time, although gotta remember to return when cooler winds blow...

You can go with family or friends. The food is fine and the river view it's pretty cool. Then you can go to take a walk in the gardens or go to dance to the ballroom. If the weather is hot and you don't like it, you can ask for a table inside.

Open restaurant meaning, no a/c! There are ceiling fans and big windows open but it is still so hot! Food was delicious. Service was good. Will not go back though.

I have eaten at this lovely historic place on every visit to Gruene. It is consistently way above average on taste and service. We really enjoy the atmosphere. I look forward to dining here everytime we decide to visit the area.

Gristmill fell short in every category that makes a dining experience enjoyable. We visited on a Sunday evening around 7 and waited about 45 minutes for a table and eventually were seated in what seemed to be an inside area but all the windows and doors were open. That evening the feels like temperature was still in the high 90's... More

My husband and I went here for our anniversary dinner. Very nice place and staff was friendly. Food was great! I'm giving this 4 stars because even with the ceiling fans... it did no justice with the humidity. No air conditioning at all so we burnt up the whole time we were there so we could not full enjoy our... More

Great place to go relax and enjoy the surroundings. I have been several times and the food and service has always been excellent. You can sit outside and look at the river or stay inside and look out the Hugh windows. If you have to wait you can sit outside and enjoy a beer or drinks.

Excellent service and food. The atmosphere in the Resturant is overwhelming with the doors open with view of the river.

This is an iconic restaurant in the area and well worth the visit. If not too hot, get a seat outside overlooking the river. It's a little pricey, but everything is good there.
