A Gem in the West Texas Desert

We decided to go with several small plates rather than main courses. Each one was inventive and excellent. Cochineal would be a highly-ranked restaurant in most big cities. Wine list was far more diverse than the California-centric selections in most SW restaurants.

Small restaurant with comfortable friendly vibe. Bar looking into kitchen. Friendly professional wait staff. Good wine list. Interesting menu that hits major food groups. Execution and presentation were grounded and complex.

We spent a very nice evening at this small restaurant with excellent food and a good wine list. We happened to be there over spring break, and reservations were essential then (although most of the clientele there at the time of our seating seemed to be locals). Would suggest calling rather than walking in. The menu appeared to change daily... More

Our table was just in front of the kitchen so the smells were wonderful. We both had fish with brocollini and green rice. The seasoning and flavor of the fish, rice and brocollini were terrific. The only issue we encountered was the waiter having some difficulty. First he couldn’t get the cork out of the wine bottle. He broke off... More

This was my second visit in the past 6 years and it did not disappoint. Amazing that such a small town can house two fabulous restaurants with the quality of food that Cochineal and Maiya's produce. It is a very small place and quite popular and I recommend calling ahead for a table. We had the pasta and shrimp, pork... More

My wife and I visited Marfa from Dallas last August and one night we ate at Cochineal. The was great all around, from appetizers to dessert. I was especially blown away by the avocado soup. We told the chef how great and he gave us the recipe. Nice young man and excellent chef. This is a must stop.

The interior is pleasant with sound dampening ceiling design, menu short that assures freshness, with good choices. The food was well prepared. Our waiter could use more information about the menu from the chef. Bar serves food as well.

Made reservations for a Thursday night. Since I was alone was seated at one of the 3 tables adjacent to the kitchen. Not as cute a decor in there as the main dining room and bar, but nice and secluded. Started with tequila old fashioned as a drink. Had never had one before, delicious! I'm a mostly vegetarian so had... More

My coworkers and I had the most amazing meal here while visiting Marfa this past week. I guess their menu is constantly changing, so I'm not sure how helpful my specific food recommendations will be, but the food was ALL unforgettable. That mixed with the great service and the cool ambiance...if you're staying in or near Marfa and love food,... More

I cannot even describe the date pudding because it is so sensual my whole account of it would be obscene. The pate, when it is available, is a dream. I love this place so much I want to marry it.
