I have been eating at La Mexicana for over 20 years. When you first walk in to the restaurant you don't know what to expect since it is housed in an old corner store, but the food in 2 words is simple and good. Try the chicken fajita plate or the chicken mole enchiladas. Great margaritas. Ask to set with... More

Who pays attention to refried beans? Mostly one endures them. These were simply wonderful. The best ever. Period. Creamy with great flavor. They set the tone for everything else. Chile Relleno, fajitas, rice, nachos, guacamole (also especially good). Parking is a little marginal. Can't tell if the place is a bar, restauarant, or take out place. Who cares. It is... More

This no-frills restaurant is very clean and offers truly authentic Mexican food. Prices are a bit high for what is being served, but the tortas and chilaquiles really take me back to Mexico. Staff are very friendly but service is a bit slow. A must if you want some real Mexican food.

This place started out as a market till the early 80's when the the Trevino family began the restaurant, bakery and take out. You can still come for traditional conchas -- or breakfast to go but we like to sit down and do the breakfast tacos-- mostly $2.25 the chorizo and eggs in flour tortilla but if you don't do... More

We always ask locals where they eat and this place was recommended by one of the security guards at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Not a fancy place, but very good food and lots of it. Will go back on my next visit to Houston.

This place has been here for 20 something years and used to be one if the best ones around, quality of food went down, prices went up, service went from good to dry and I don't care attitude and overall just average, food tasteless and restrooms dirty not again.

I can't believe this restaurant got #1 rating for Mexican, by the Houston Press. I was looking for a different Mexican food place for date night. Husband had the Guisado de puerco. No spice or flavor.$13.95 I had combination plate, consisting of "spicy" tamale, quesidilla, beef taco, rice and beans. If that was a spicy tamale, I hate to think... More

This was given good reviews in a food blog, so we gave it a try. It was nice, not stellar, but good. The atmosphere is pleasant, the waitstaff responsive. The prices seem a tad high for the selection and quality. I would go back.

When I lived in Houston, I loved this place, but on a recent trip to our old favorite, we were so disappointed. The food seemed to be made with lower quality ingredients. The chicken was very dry and was not flavorful. My husband was equally disappointed in his beef enchiladas. It also seemed very dirty. So sad!

Both the Nachos and Enchiladas were good but tasted rather plain to me. They lacked a bit of edge. We were in the back of the restaurant, unfortunately near to the restroom door. The front of the restaurant with bar, sports and kitchen area looked more lively and friendly. For a quick plain meal I would recommend.
