Description: Three decades and two generations of experience and passion go into every smiling face and mouth-watering bite that make-up El Chaparral. Our family history is etched into everything we do. In 1972, our parents, Charlie and Mary Garcia, followed their dream to a small eatery in Helotes, Texas.

Meep! Meep! Out of the way boys! I'm following the roadrunner to a hacienda on the hill to get some mighty fine tex-mex. Not too far past the place for some weekend boot scootin' at Floore's Country Store, El Chap sits in the picturesque rolling hills of Helotes on Bandera Highway. Jose's Special with enchiladas, tamale, crispy taco, guacamole, rice... More

The coyote's not taking us down anytime soon, friend. It's good to hear that our Queso de Mar was just as exciting as the nachos -- both these courses and Jose's Special are ready whenever you are. We appreciate your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you again soon. If there's anything we can do to improve your... More

This was the first place I worked at when we moved here to Texas in 1979. I bought my first car with the money I made waitressing. So it has a lot of memories for me when I visit. It was a lot smaller then, and the food was much better. I was sad to see that the quality over... More

Thanks so much for the fond memories -- it's a shame you don't feel that we've lived up to our old glory. Our team is very proud of how far the restaurant has come since the '70s, and it's disappointing to think that some associate our growth with a drop in quality. We're sorry your cheese enchiladas were under par... More

Every time we visit San Antonio we come here to eat at least a couple times! The food is awesome and reasonably priced! I love the Helotes delight and fajitas!

Have eaten at this place for over 30 years, but not near as frequently as I used to. Since Mr. Garcia is retired or semi retired the quality of the food has slipped a good bit. No I only go at lunch and get the fajita lunch special which is still very good. My evening favorite, the Pancho Villa enchilada... More

Sorry our enchiladas haven't been up to your standards lately, Brian. We can't tell you how much we appreciate your support over the years, and it's disappointing to think we've let down a longtime fan. That said, we're surprised that you think the Pancho Villa has dipped in quality -- we haven't made any significant changes to the recipe. We... More

Whenever anyone asks where the best Tex Mex restaurant is in San Antonio, we tell them El Chaparral in Helotes. It's not that central in San Antonio, but worth the drive out to Helotes if you are on the Northwest side of town. We went there for lunch in mid December and all of the good stuff is still there.... This Mexican restaurant was recommended to us and we thought we'd give it a try. It was a very good meal. Everybody at the table ordered something different and we cleaned out plates. (would probably have picked them up and licked them if it weren't crass)! The Helotes location has been in business for 42 years. That, alone, should tell... More

I eat the spinach enchiladas there every week. They are fantastic! I also like the bean soup and salsa.

You never know what to expect when dining at a venue you've never visited before. Fortunately we heard raves from a friend and this place lived up to its word. Very pleasantly surprised, excellent wait staff, short wait for the super HOT & freshly prepared food.

I was visiting for business and a small group of us stopped in for dinner. The atmosphere was pleasant and the staff was very friendly. This place is a local favorite. The margaritas are great (a little pricey but good); MUST try the cilantro cream sauce enchiladas!! The queso is Velveeta-like so if you are looking for a tasty queso skip this appetizer! Great patio for outside dining! Today's visit the service stunk but I've experienced better in the past.

Sorry your visit left something to be desired, Sarah. We don't hear too many complaints about our queso, so we're surprised that you think it's sub-par. Still, we're glad you love the enchiladas and margaritas, and we look forward to seeing you again soon -- we'll be sure to step up the service next time. Thanks for your feedback, Carlos... More
