Description: It all started back in 1967 when Sicilian born Giovanni Smecca decided to move to Galveston, Texas from Patterson, New Jersey after hearing Glen Campbell’s famous “Galveston” during a card game. Giovanni always dreamed of being a professional fisherman, so he decided to give it a shot and made the drive to Galveston. After battles of sea sickness, Giovanni quickly decided that the fish business wasn’t for him.Heartbroken, Giovanni was about to move back to New Jersey when he met Mario Bonaccorso who was trying to open a pizzeria. The two became great friends, and together, these two young Italian entrepreneurs started Mario’s Flying Pizza and brought the “pizza pie” to Galveston Island.Today, we are still family owned and operated and are considered a delightful, neighborhood restaurant with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We serve a wide variety of Italian cuisine and New York style pizza and strive to use fresh, seasonal, ingredients wherever possible, so come on in, sit back, relax, and enjoy a wonderful meal and a nice glass of wine at Mario’s Ristorante!

We had a group of around 25 and the Mario's had a room set up for us. They allowed us to order off the menu and had separate checks for us. Great food!!!

Restaurant claims to have the best pizza in town, but it wasn't that great. The cheapest pasta dish was $15 and upward from there. Don't order the Salad Caprese unless you want just mozzarella cheese and tomatoes on a plate...no salad to it. Limited wine selection. Pizza ingredients were not as fresh as other places. We would not return.

Had dinner there on 8/14/14. The service was excellent, but I thought the food was just okay. I had the seafood alfredo with shrimp, crawfish and crab for $19.00. I thought the portion was average or on the small side. What was strange was the amount of sliced garlic in the sauce (huge hunks about 4 cloves). I was very... More

We've been coming here for years, and until today have always enjoyed the beef ravioli meal. We were told today that it is off the menu along with other very Italian items, ie, bruschetta. Seems strange, and there doesn't seem to be much rationale for the decision.

If you like spaghetti you will love Spaghetti Mario. First time @ Mario's and I will make sure to frequent when visiting. Good size portion and the homemade Italian sausage was special.

Love their homemade hand on whole wheat crust with great toppings. Kids love their plain cheese and meat lovers pizza. service is great! takes a while because it is home made.

I've been eating and loving Mario's since I was a kid. All you have to do is walk in the door and you will know by the aroma that you are in Italian food heaven. Best pizza in town and the other food is excellent too. The atmosphere reminds me of Little Italy in NY. It's traditional old school Italian.... More

Galveston has been my adopted home town for just over a year and I have not had much opportunity to explore the local eateries due to extensive travel. I have driven past Mario's on 61st Street many times. I don't have much choice about that as anyone who lives on Galveston Island must come on and off the island via... More
