Description: It all started back in 1967 when Sicilian born Giovanni Smecca decided to move to Galveston, Texas from Patterson, New Jersey after hearing Glen Campbell’s famous “Galveston” during a card game. Giovanni always dreamed of being a professional fisherman, so he decided to give it a shot and made the drive to Galveston. After battles of sea sickness, Giovanni quickly decided that the fish business wasn’t for him.Heartbroken, Giovanni was about to move back to New Jersey when he met Mario Bonaccorso who was trying to open a pizzeria. The two became great friends, and together, these two young Italian entrepreneurs started Mario’s Flying Pizza and brought the “pizza pie” to Galveston Island.Today, we are still family owned and operated and are considered a delightful, neighborhood restaurant with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We serve a wide variety of Italian cuisine and New York style pizza and strive to use fresh, seasonal, ingredients wherever possible, so come on in, sit back, relax, and enjoy a wonderful meal and a nice glass of wine at Mario’s Ristorante!

Decided to try the lunch buffet. Now, granted...I did get there 30 mins before the buffet ended. So, I was ready to make allowances. The high point was the spinach artichoke soup! With baked bread slices that had been there long enough to pass as croutons, yummy. Most all of the dishes did look a bit hammered, but once again,... More

After spending 24 hours at Moody Gardens we were ready to eat something other than overpriced tasteless food, so Mario's was close and seemed to fit the bill! We enjoyed our pizza, dessert and the staff was really sweet with my son. A cook was prepping pizza dough and they had my son come over there to watch! They threw... More

I took my staff for lunch with high expectations but food was just ok. Service was poor, food was cold or terrible in almost all cases. It wasn't a good value. I won't be back.

The lunch buffet selection did not have a whole lot of variety, but the quality made up for the quantity. It included about 4 different kinds of pizzas, spaghetti, ziti, beef stew and fish along with salad and desserts. The pizza was delicious and the shrimp and crab Bisque was my favorite! I can only imagine how good the made... More

This place started out as a pizza joint and grew into a "ristorante" over the years. My instincts told me to order the pizza but I went with the full lasagna. My wife ordered the small order Cannelloni and didn't care for it. The full lasagna was smaller than the half-size we get at out local Italian restaurant in Tyler,... More

We wanted a pizza and decided to try this restaurant. Everyone was friendly when we entered and the atmosphere was very Italian. Brendon, our waiter, was excellent and patient as we couldn't decide what pizza to order or what size. Fortunately we chose the large with everything which was delicious! We ended up taking 1/2 of it with us for... More

The garlic bread was probably the best thing we ordered. The chicken Parmesan was very good. I had the chef make it with marinara instead of cream sauce. It was actually very good. The spaghetti with meat sauce was not as good as the marinara. The waiter was very friendly and enthusiastic about the island.

We've been here on two visits to Galveston. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is great. Highly recommend the seafood stuffed mushroom appetizer, the shrimp diavolo, spaghetti & meatballs...I could go on! Oh, the chocolate eruption cake is divine.
