It all started back in 1967 when Sicilian born Giovanni Smecca decided to move to Galveston, Texas from Patterson, New Jersey after hearing Glen Campbell’s famous “Galveston” during a card game. Giovanni always dreamed of being a professional fisherman, so he decided to give it a shot and made the drive to Galveston. After battles of sea sickness, Giovanni quickly decided that the fish business wasn’t for him.Heartbroken, Giovanni was about to move back to New Jersey when he met Mario Bonaccorso who was trying to open a pizzeria. The two became great friends, and together, these two young Italian entrepreneurs started Mario’s Flying Pizza and brought the “pizza pie” to Galveston Island.Today, we are still family owned and operated and are considered a delightful, neighborhood restaurant with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We serve a wide variety of Italian cuisine and New York style pizza and strive to use fresh, seasonal, ingredients wherever possible, so come on in, sit back, relax, and enjoy a wonderful meal and a nice glass of wine at Mario’s Ristorante!

Great service & food

The restaurant was recommended by the hotel staff and we loved it. They had lots of pizza items, lots of freshly made pasta dishes, salads and even small plates for the small appetites The cannoli was awesome! We had a party of ten and they had a large party room that we were seated in, the staff... read more

What a supreme pizza this is. Across the street from the Gulf of Mexico is perhaps the best pizza experience in Galveston. Decor and vistas are only part of the meal. Nice menu options are complimented with solid gluten-free choices. Pizza of high quality is served here made all that much better by the wonderful setting. Great service once again... More

The food was good. Service was quick, efficient and courteous. They even let us split a meal between children.

The ambiance is wonderful, as is the service, but I found the food to be a bit mediocre. We'll be back, but it won't be our first choice.

I got the Supreme Pizza. I will have to say it was the best everything pizza I ever had. I bet the other pizza is good too, but I am going back for the pizza with everything on it.

We first tried Margarhite Pizza in Pompei, Sorrento and Amalfi, Italy (Yes, Rome, too but it was awful) Mario's in the Pirate Beach area of Galveston Island had it as good as the Italian versions. The shop was comfortable, decorated with family pictures of the owner. Our server was very friendly, even recommending a burger place on the next leg... More

We had a custom made pizza for dinner which was very tasty. We had different ingredients on both halves and they made each side as god as the other. Very generous with ingredients. We had the lunch buffet at another time and it was good also. Good value for food.
