It all started back in 1967 when Sicilian born Giovanni Smecca decided to move to Galveston, Texas from Patterson, New Jersey after hearing Glen Campbell’s famous “Galveston” during a card game. Giovanni always dreamed of being a professional fisherman, so he decided to give it a shot and made the drive to Galveston. After battles of sea sickness, Giovanni quickly decided that the fish business wasn’t for him.Heartbroken, Giovanni was about to move back to New Jersey when he met Mario Bonaccorso who was trying to open a pizzeria. The two became great friends, and together, these two young Italian entrepreneurs started Mario’s Flying Pizza and brought the “pizza pie” to Galveston Island.Today, we are still family owned and operated and are considered a delightful, neighborhood restaurant with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We serve a wide variety of Italian cuisine and New York style pizza and strive to use fresh, seasonal, ingredients wherever possible, so come on in, sit back, relax, and enjoy a wonderful meal and a nice glass of wine at Mario’s Ristorante!

You can either order off a menu or buffet style. We did buffet and they have good pizza and alot of options. Good place to go for a lunch break.

Our group of 5 ordered a variety of pastas and salads. We did not try the pizza. None of the food impressed. In fact, my 8 and 11 yr old pasta lovers thought the meatballs and lasagna were "gross". Not worth a return visit.

Recently visited this ristorante with my family on a Saturday night. We were seated right away but the hostess/owner was extremely rude and abrupt. Seemed irritated, like we were bothering her. We started with an order of cheese sticks which were awesome! It went downhill from there. We ordered a stromboli and a calzone. The wait for the food was... More

We did a take out pizza. It was ready on time, hot and delicious. Easy in and easy out, tasty and not expensive. I recommend this place for a quick, reasonably priced meal. I have eaten inside in the past but it has been several years. If my memory serves me correctly, the service and food was great then. But... More

We walked one mile for this restaurant from the Hilton and it was well worth the walk. We had Paula S. as our waitress and she was very good. You won't be disappointed. Good food, good service

I've been to Mario's a couple times when visiting my sister in Galveston. I love the warm food and chill atmosphere. My sister had the lunch buffet the other day and was very pleased! I enjoyed a simple angel hair pasta with marinara, and my mom the chicken marsala. We will definitely be returning over and over. :)

My last meal in Galveston was had here. The food was pretty good, I won't say the best Italian I've had, but certainly not the worst. What really stood out was the staff. Our waiter, Derrick, was OUTSTANDING! A great personality, helpful, fun and truly made the experience memorable. Without Derrick, this might have just been another restaurant on our... More
