It all started back in 1967 when Sicilian born Giovanni Smecca decided to move to Galveston, Texas from Patterson, New Jersey after hearing Glen Campbell’s famous “Galveston” during a card game. Giovanni always dreamed of being a professional fisherman, so he decided to give it a shot and made the drive to Galveston. After battles of sea sickness, Giovanni quickly decided that the fish business wasn’t for him.Heartbroken, Giovanni was about to move back to New Jersey when he met Mario Bonaccorso who was trying to open a pizzeria. The two became great friends, and together, these two young Italian entrepreneurs started Mario’s Flying Pizza and brought the “pizza pie” to Galveston Island.Today, we are still family owned and operated and are considered a delightful, neighborhood restaurant with a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. We serve a wide variety of Italian cuisine and New York style pizza and strive to use fresh, seasonal, ingredients wherever possible, so come on in, sit back, relax, and enjoy a wonderful meal and a nice glass of wine at Mario’s Ristorante!

Great Italian Buffet

Not a fancy place but the dinner buffet was a great value at $15.99 The selection was varied and excellent. My husband had pizza which he said was very good. Friendly service also.

I ate off the buffet. The food was cold even a dish that was just brought out. The pizza on the buffet was good and hot if you got it as soon as it was brought out. My husband ordered off the menu and he liked what he got. The buffet seemed to be the big thing there but they... More

In my opinion this restaurant it's not so good. The pasta was very very hard to digest and the menu was wrong. The menu is exposed in italian language, but the words are wrong. Example: the wine. The sections of the wine are reversed. Vino Rosso in italy is the red wine, but in the menu you can fine a... More

Wait staff was horrible! Our greeter was rude, acted like we were a problem.. We brushed it off. Then our server, Serena? I think that was her name. Didn't even look at us, we never got a refill of water, our food was wrong, and we had to go to the host stand to pay our bill! Will never be... More

Best lasagna I have ever had at a restaurant!!! Portion sizes are huge. Took half of the food back to the hotel for a late dinner. Will definitely eat at Mario's when we return to Galveston. Restaurant also has pizza. Did not order pizza but several tables around us did. It looked like it would be very good

The restaurant was recommended by the hotel staff and we loved it. They had lots of pizza items, lots of freshly made pasta dishes, salads and even small plates for the small appetites The cannoli was awesome! We had a party of ten and they had a large party room that we were seated in, the staff was attentive, our... More

What a supreme pizza this is. Across the street from the Gulf of Mexico is perhaps the best pizza experience in Galveston. Decor and vistas are only part of the meal. Nice menu options are complimented with solid gluten-free choices. Pizza of high quality is served here made all that much better by the wonderful setting. Great service once again... More

The food was good. Service was quick, efficient and courteous. They even let us split a meal between children.

The ambiance is wonderful, as is the service, but I found the food to be a bit mediocre. We'll be back, but it won't be our first choice.
