Great Hill Country BBQ

On our last day in the Hill Country, we finally made it to Cranky Frank's, and boy are we glad we did! It was the 4th BBQ place we visited in as many days. The only drawback - the hours are only 11am-3pm and we were usually somewhere else. We ribs, sausage, and pulled pork - all were excellent... read more

It's hard to beat Cooper's but who wants to drive 40 miles to Llano for BBQ? This is a decent standby.

having been on a bbq team in tx for 30 years+ i feel that i 'm qualified to say the brisket, while tender, didnot have the smokyflavor i would have liked, using more oak, mesquite or pecan would flavor the meat more, imho, the brisket was long on tenderness and short on taste, for my tastebuds. also while good, the... Best BBQ in Fredericksburg! So good we ate there twice...once for ribs and once for brisket! Frank's closes early so be sure you go for lunch...they tend to run of the good stuff around 1:00. The sides were homemade and very good.

As with most of the hometown BBQ's, being named after the owner does not even suggest how good this place is to feast at. I have never had a so-so meal there, they have all bee great. Like all really good BBQs, they serve the meat, and you serve the rest of the fixings. Best of all are the BBQ... More

I've eaten BBQ all over Texas for over 60 years and concluded this is one of the very best. I live about 15 miles away and find myself driving to Cranky Franks at least once every 2 weeks. Brisket is great and usually what I order, but if I really want to treat myself - I order the ribs. They... More

Typical great BBQ place...not much for décor, but it's all about some seriously good ribs and brisket. We found the prices pretty reasonable, and the staff was not cranky at all, despite the name!

Place doesn't look like much from the outside but the food is excellent. We were lucky to arrive on a Friday at 1:00 and they still had food and not much of a crowd. We shared brisket and pork - both excellent. We like a different type of sauce but Franks is not bad. Totally recommend this place.

We spent a week in Texas working our way through a list of BBQ places and right up until the last day and last meal before we flew home (when we went to Blacks in Lockhart) we were both agreed that Cranky Franks was the winner. Personally I think that the sausage I had was the best but Blacks just... More
