It has been a staple here for many years, but it has closed for business. Hear someone may open it again.

Living in Elgin, I love the history of the building and the town. The food at City Cafe goes up and down with the owners and the cooks. The breakfast is always good and has several morning specials. The chicken fried stead is good and the atmosphere at the restaurant is great; there is so much history in the building.... More

The lunch buffet has a limited selection. When we were there, they had chicken fried streak, stuffed bell pepper, and BBQ chicken. The CFS was large and OK. They had a small salad bar, and mini cup cakes for dessert. The wait staff was very attentive. So, lunch was just OK.

Over the years City Café has been up and down. After deciding to try it out once again I was very impressed. The staff has improved tremendously, was glad to see the updated menus & friendly wait staff. Ordered the Lonestar Burger,by far the best burger ive eaten. Also, they have new buffet tables, which my friend decided to go... More

Such a shame. Unfortunately this home town favorite has changed ownership; it will not be around in six months. At noon on Saturday, there were only five tables of diners - it used to be full. We had the chicken fried chicken; it was tough and the coating would not stay on. The green beans were canned. This has been... More

First the good: I grew up in a small Texas town, so I love to frequent local businesses. This one looked charming and felt like home. The young girl servers were sweet. My husband's burger and fries were delicious. And now the bad: there was a sewage smell coming from the women's bathroom. I realize in old buildings there can... More

Over the last year, the City Cafe's service has been deteriorating; food is now average but service is absolutely terrible.

Food is so so, service is somewhere between poor and good depending on the day. Only real reason to eat here is there are not a lot of good sit down comfort food places in Elgin. Best for breakfast. If I never go back I doubt I would be missing much.

This was my first visit to the City Cafe. Instead of spending time reviewing the menu I asked the waiter what she would order. It was suggested get the pork chops which I did grilled. Meat was cooked well and excellent sides. The waiter was attentive and very sweet young lady. I would go back again. Didn't the dessert but... More
