Description: We are located on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border, in an Area of Outstanding Beauty with beautiful countryside, wonderful walks and a pretty village. There are many footpaths, bridleways and mountain biking routes from the village including a route up to an ancient hillfort at Fosbury. The pub is at the heart of the Vernham Dean community, and we proved this by winning the Fullers Hampshire Village Pub of the year in 2012 - "the pub is the hub" award, combined with Vernham Dean winning best Village in Hampshire award. We often have 'event' days for occassions such as the Jubilee, Royal Wedding and bank holidays normally feature a band playing. We have an exciting beer festival on the August Bank Holiday weekend, which is always well attended by the locals and new customers alike!

Surprisingly, there's a shortage of real, proper country pubs around here (a lot of pretenders), and although I've had a pint or two in this place previously, I can honestly say that this is a proper country pub with delicious food. Open fires, a fair scattering of villagers dogs and a convivial atmosphere... We made an impromptu decision to eat... More

We went for lunch on a cold but sunny Sunday. We did not have a reservation but were kindly squeezed in for very nice fish and chips. Service was excellent, atmosphere lively and busy. People enjoying drinks at the bar, sitting at the blazing fire and having lunch. Service was good, food was good, price was right. We'll be back... More

We visited this pub to try somewhere different for a Saturday evening meal. We called to book and were told no problem but were made aware of a large party booking. This was no problem and allowed us to plan to arrive a bit earlier to miss the rush. We were welcomed, the service was attentive and the food was... More

The beauty of this lovely old inn is largely due to the fact that it is independently run by a very friendly and welcoming family rather than a brewery chain. It is at the heart of village life and although I am not a local, I have relatives in the village and have visited on many occasions when a retreat... More

Thank you for your review - I am so glad you like The George, and Matt is delighted with your comment so an especial thank you from him! We have taken the cheesecake off as we felt people needed a change - though it did creep back on for the last two Sundays. If you give us a couple of... More

We had our 2nd lunch at the George today...& it proved every bit as good as the 1st visit in early September. The welcome/service from staff were spot on. Lewis, James & Nicky's manager, looked after us perfectly and a nice touch was chef bringing side dishes to our table himself with our main courses, giving us an opportunity to... More

A glorious autumn day spent at this idyllic country pub deep in the Bourne Valley. The landlord and landlady made us feel totally at home for a memorable birthday lunch. Roast beef was legendary, and my Brixham Plaice a truly sensational piece of fish. Our party included our 1 year old granddaughter. The staff heated her baby food, and added... More

Food very good, staff excellent and good atmosphere. What I do object to is the presence of dogs. Animals have no place in an establishment that prepares and serves food for human consumption. I realise that for most of your customers this is a plus point, but we are in 2014 and sooner or later you ill come a cropper... More

I am so glad you enjoyed the food, staff and atmosphere. I am sorry that you did not like the presence of dogs in the pub. Dogs are very much part of the village life and in fact one of the reasons that many people come to The George Inn as they can bring their (well-behaved) dogs as you mentioned.... More

Had a meal here a week ago, booked as we didn't know how busy it would be, good job we did as it was very very busy. The atmosphere was delightful and welcoming! Must recommend the Chilli Prawns and the warm chicken and bacon salad. They also have a number of different ales one being Crop Circle. We loved the... More
