We are located on the Hampshire/Wiltshire border, in an Area of Outstanding Beauty with beautiful countryside, wonderful walks and a pretty village. There are many footpaths, bridleways and mountain biking routes from the village including a route up to an ancient hillfort at Fosbury. The pub is at the heart of the Vernham Dean community, and we proved this by winning the Fullers Hampshire Village Pub of the year in 2012 - "the pub is the hub" award, combined with Vernham Dean winning best Village in Hampshire award. We often have 'event' days for occassions such as the Jubilee, Royal Wedding and bank holidays normally feature a band playing. We have an exciting beer festival on the August Bank Holiday weekend, which is always well attended by the locals and new customers alike!

Four of us has lunch at this pub today and we all enjoyed our meals . We all had something different ; Fish Pie, Chicken Curry , Scampi , Cod and Chips. Puds are delightful too. All too often village pubs are not as welcoming as they could be for folks who do not live locally , but the welcome... More

What a brilliant place to eat. Just returned home from having an absolutely lovely Sunday Roast. All freshly cooked and just the right size. Puddings lovely too and all served with a smile on the faces of the people who work there! Very friendly atmosphere and will be sure to return.

This is a quintessential English village pub. Log fires, labradors, excellent draught beers and very good food. Add to this the friendly staff and what more could one want? And when was the last time you saw Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir on a pub wine list?

We arrived at The George after a long walk across the downs, hungry and thirsty. We had an excellent lunch - robust leek and potato soup, followed by smoked haddock chowder - highly recommended. Staff are friendly; dogs and children present and welcome; log fire in the inglenook. What more could one want on a winter's day?

Surprisingly, there's a shortage of real, proper country pubs around here (a lot of pretenders), and although I've had a pint or two in this place previously, I can honestly say that this is a proper country pub with delicious food. Open fires, a fair scattering of villagers dogs and a convivial atmosphere... We made an impromptu decision to eat... More

We went for lunch on a cold but sunny Sunday. We did not have a reservation but were kindly squeezed in for very nice fish and chips. Service was excellent, atmosphere lively and busy. People enjoying drinks at the bar, sitting at the blazing fire and having lunch. Service was good, food was good, price was right. We'll be back... More

We visited this pub to try somewhere different for a Saturday evening meal. We called to book and were told no problem but were made aware of a large party booking. This was no problem and allowed us to plan to arrive a bit earlier to miss the rush. We were welcomed, the service was attentive and the food was... More

The beauty of this lovely old inn is largely due to the fact that it is independently run by a very friendly and welcoming family rather than a brewery chain. It is at the heart of village life and although I am not a local, I have relatives in the village and have visited on many occasions when a retreat... More
