WOnderful food in a gritty neighborhod on the way from Downtown to the airport

Went thee for lunch the day after a tasty meal at Central BBQ. Great pulled pork in a old gas station. Empty when we arrive at 1145 but full minutes later with lawyer/banker types , mechanics and a blue collar 40 crowd. Friendly service and clearly a locally owned and operated comfort food venue.

Payne's has resisted the temptation to become a tourist trap. There's no arguing about the dumpiness of the building or the deliciousness of the chopped sandwich I had.

Fit true definition of dive. Old place, likely once a repair shop. Empty shell of concrete block with no decor. Small counter upfront - Cash only. Limited menu. Group ordered combination of pulled pork sandwiches and rib platters. Good quality and generous portions. Excellent value. No one hip to the cole slaw as a standalone side - a bit pickle-y... More

Ordered 2 regular sized chopped pork sandwiches 1 smoked sausage, 1 order beans and 2 bottles of water all for 16.25. Can't beat that price. Food was all real good, the only issue I have with it is that it is a little sweet which I think is all because of the sauce. The slaw covering everything was great. It... More

I only had the chopped pork sandwich. A friend who lives in memphis told me that it's what you have to get if you visit. The sandwich is pretty big with nuclear yellow coleslaw on top. You can get the sauce hot or mild. I got the hot. It wasn't too spicy. The sandwich is messy. It's good but I... More

We were referred here by a local while on a business trip. The place is an old three bay garage so don't expect to be wowed by the location. The service was very welcoming and friendly. I had the regular pork chopped plate and it's absolutely fantastic!! I also recommend having a hot tamale while you are there. Great stop... More

if I was not told what to expect when arriving at Payne's ~ I may not have gone it. An old service station with the three service bays blocked up with cinder and a Canopy put over the top to dress it up. Parking lot and exterior has not seen much TLC over the years either. With that said -... More

We visited for lunch today on our hosts recommendation. The place looks like it may have previously been a service station. Bring cash. No cards accepted. We placed our order at the counter then paid and stepped to the side as our order was prepared. It probably took 3 minutes. We grabbed a table and really enjoyed a pulled pork... More

We make Payne's our first stop when visiting Memphis. We love the pulled pork, beans and mustardy slaw. No frills dining...just the kind of place that has the best BBQ.
