This BBQ place was mentioned on Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimern. We made it a destination and it was worth it!! Quaint family run place. Excellent food. They are closed on Sunday and they close at 6 PM. If you love good BBQ and fried bologna sandwiches, don't miss Paynes in Memphis.

Ive been going to Paynes since 1973. Nothing, and I mean nothing has changed....great BBQ, smoked sausage and decor. Still have the same planter hanging from ceiling. Best people ever. If you are a real BBQ addict, this fix is for you. I'm hungry just writing about it.

One of the best pulled pork sandwiches you will ever try , the mustard based slaw is so different and the sandwich just simply melts in your mouth ! A must try on any BBQ Crawl !

It was pretty good. I am from OK and am used to a different type of BBQ but the pulled pork was good, just not what I am used to having deep in the South!

I first started eating at Payne's in the late 70's, when legendary pit master Horton Payne would be in the back barely visible due to all the smoke in the joint. In the forty some-odd years I have been eating barbecue, this is and remains the gold standard by which all others are judged. And having eaten barbecue all over... More

Driving from Lebanon, TN to Little Rock we were hungry when we hit Memphis. Wanting to try someplace we had not eaten at we picked Payne's. An awfully good choice. The chopped pork sandwiches are some of the best we've ever eaten as are the wonderful beans. This is not a fancy place, it's an old service station, but who... More

We drove 3.5 hours for this sandwich for the 2nd time and would do it again. Simple perfection. Each order prepared by the owner with love and a smile.

We went on a bbq road trip stopping at a bunch of restaurants to try bbq over a four day period(look for our other reviews!) Stop in here for a quick bite on the way outta town. Great story behind this place, super friendly staff, looks a little run down but don't let that discourage you. We had a pulled... More

Payne's came highly recommended, but we were told not to be turned off by the building. They were so right! The building was an old gas station but the food was amazing. Great "chopped" pork BBQ and wonderful "mustard coleslaw". The staff was friendly and it was really busy (mix of locals and tourists).

Payne's came highly recommended by many travel guides including the New York Times so they were on our BBQ Joint Hit List. As soon as we got off the plane and into our rental we drove straight to Payne's . The place is pretty dumpy(converted gas station), but I think this is just part of the ambiance. of a real... More
