Payne's came highly recommended, but we were told not to be turned off by the building. They were so right! The building was an old gas station but the food was amazing. Great "chopped" pork BBQ and wonderful "mustard coleslaw". The staff was friendly and it was really busy (mix of locals and tourists).

Payne's came highly recommended by many travel guides including the New York Times so they were on our BBQ Joint Hit List. As soon as we got off the plane and into our rental we drove straight to Payne's . The place is pretty dumpy(converted gas station), but I think this is just part of the ambiance. of a real... More

Great bbq. The place looks a bit run down but don't let that fool you. They are a great group of people.

This restaurant has some of the best barbecue I have ever had on a sandwich. the portions are large and the mustard slaw is an incredible flavor boost--almost too good to express! If you are looking for a fancy restaurant this is not the place – but if you're looking for awesome barbecue sandwiches – this is the place. I... More

After visiting Stax a couple of friends and myself decided to try this iconic BBQ joint. The setting was scruffy, but we knew that coming in. We all 3 ordered the BBQ plate and the service was quick and the food hot. The meat was mushy and I didn't care for the sauce at all, it was just too sweet.... More

You can probably google an article or two about this place, so going in you know it has to be good. It's in a weird run down kind of neighborhood in an old gas station. Not to be deterred, hubby stayed in the RV and I went in to place an order to go. As soon as I walked in,... More

I have passed by this place for years and didn't stop. BIG MISTAKE!!!!!!!!!! I've tried many of the bbq restaurants in Memphis and hands down, Payne's is the best. If you're looking for fancy dining, this aint your place. But if you're looking for some delicious bbq, Payne's is what you want. The pulled pork sandwich was incredible--great smoky flavor,... More

Do a youtube search on Payne's and you will see what a great, down home, place this is - absolutely nothing fancy - just great BBQ cooked right in the little kitchen. We bought a bottle of the great sauce which she poured out of a big jug into a ketchup bottle and we used it on other BBQ the... More

Loved the pulled pork. Wonderful crispy bits of bark with a sweet and slightly tangy sauce. Huge portions... cheap prices... great owners.... Payne's been doing smokin right for generations. I want some more right now.
