True, Honest, BBQ

My husband and I stopped by here on a cross country roadtrip over a year ago, and we still talk about the place! We only wish it was closer! So authentic and delicious! Spicy BBQ is wonderful, The mustard based coleslaw is great too!

I don't know what I was thinking when I only gave this place 3 stars the last time I reviewed it. OK, Payne's is a dump, no one is arguing with that, but they do serve up some delicious BBQ sandwiches. The menu is simple and this place is CASH ONLY, but if you are in Memphis and crave a... More

This BBQ joint is really good. This is not a fast food joint. Do not expect you meal in 30seconds. They take their time. Good portions. Plenty of food. Worth the time to find and enjoy.

Nothing fancy about this hole in the wall white brick building with about a dozen tables and a small menu but this place produces the best sandwich of "Q" I've ever put in my mouth! The meat, slaw and sauce is so delicious no matter whether you get a chopped shoulder, Bologna or smoked sausage. Never been a fan of... More

this place is not fancy and more of a hole in the wall and a not too fancy area, but one of the best pulled pork sandwiches we've ever had. If you like pulled pork this is well worth a 10 to 15 minute drive off the expressway. We read about it in one of our books and the sandwich... More

Whenever we're in Memphis, we always go to Payne's for a barbecue fix. Their pork sandwich with a mustardy slaw is one of the best meals in Memphis. Southern Living Magazine lists Payne's as one of their favorite barbecue places, so you know it's got to be great. It's not an elegant dining establishment. In fact, it looks like it... More

Payne's has the best chopped pork sandwich anywhere. The yellow mustard slaw on the soft bum you just can't beat. Unbelievably casual in an old gas station, you wouldn't think such a great taste and sandwich would come out of this shop but it is the best you will find go to Payne's BBQ now.

As a self proclaimed bbq connoseur, I will drive 100 miles out of the way to go eat good bbq. At Payne's BBQ it's not in an area of Memphis i usually frequent but if you want the best tasting bbq sometimes you just have to go out of your way to find it. Nothing fancy about the place as... More

This is not a fancy place - to say the least - inside or outside. The menu is very limited but once you taste the barbeque you'll be hooked. You order at an inside counter and then wait for some of the best barbeque you'll ever taste! The slaw was wonderful and we didn't have any, but I heard some... More

My wife and I came to Payne's to have one of their famous chopped pork sandwiches. When we arrived, Payne's looked just like we thought it would from all the descriptions on Tripadvisor. Nothing fancy here just plane down home hosptility, super service and great bbq. Our sandwiches were great. My wife had their famous chopped pork sandwich with spicy... More
