Great place for a meat and three

I've recently learned that not all areas of the country use the term "meat and three", so I'll explain. It's short for a meat and three vegetables. At The Cupboard you choose the protein (I chose fried chicken) and then three veggies (I chose 2: tomato cucumber salad and fried green tomatoes... read more

Basic southern food; over cooked vegetables, meatloaf, fried chicken, chicken fried steak, etc. Lots of carbs and sugar.

We had an early dinner there on June 28. Had the vegetable plate and it was extremely good. The miniature cornbread muffins were unique to me and were delicious. So were the rolls that were also served. Will definitely eat there again when in the area.

I was driving on Union looking for a place for breakfast and noticed the cupboard. It is the type of place with autographed pictures on the wall and regulars known by name. I had the special of 2 eggs, bacon or sausage, toast and hash browns for 4.99. The service was fast and the food was good. A great way... More

You can still find occasional food as it was prepared in the past but mostly now you will get less than satisfactory meals. I had chicken and dumplings and the dumplings were one big solid mass of dough. They give you miniature corn muffins instead of the crispy sticks they were famous for along with less than fresh ingredients. I... More

I had such a craving for this place and finally got there Sunday. The place was packed, but we got seated in minutes. A very pleasant waitress named Katherine was at our table in seconds. She informed us they were out of rolls, but brought us a heaping basket of mini cornbread muffins. We could have made a meal of... More

Many locals go here for a good down home cooked meal with offerings you won't find on Beale Street. This was a treat for us Californians where many of the vegetables served at this restaurant are not offered out our way.

My wife and I stopped in for supper in mid-May, and were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the prompt service. She had the chicken strip salad, and I had the fried catfish, with field peas, eggplant casserole, and baked apple. Everything was perfectly prepared, especially the catfish - crispy on the outside and moist and tender... More

They have many fine main dishes, and while the fried catfish is my favorite, the fried chicken is also superb. Their vegetables are truly Southern cooking at its finest. My favorite vegetable dish is turnip greens, but their Italian Spinach, crowder peas and eggplant casserole are also delicious.

Not a lot to say about this restaurant. Everything was 'average', Nothing special about the food, for example: -- sunnyside eggs were not fully cooked (dangerous to pregnant women etc.) -- hashbrowns tasty but not not crispy -- bacon quite nice -- had to ask three times for water -- pancakes good but nothing special Service was about the same....
