Sweet potato pancakes – that's a thing

I'd read that this was the oldest restaurant in the area, and it probably is. Not overly different from a million other retro diners, but this one is walking distance from the National Civil Rights Museum and it's wildly popular. I arrived around mid-afternoon and it was packed.

Perhaps it was the 40 minute wait after a promise of 20 or, more likely, it was the announcement that the pipes had burst in a bathroom, the water was shut off and we might have to do with just one cup of coffee, but the celebrated Arcade was just okay. The Redneck Eggs I ordered (Travel Channel celebrated, the... More

We lucked out by getting to sit in Elvis's booth! This is the oldest restaurant in Memphis. It has a cool vibe, with locals and "in-the-know" tourists enjoying the delicious southern cooking. We had bad luck in that there were some no shows on staff, so the service was beyond slow. I don't think this is normal for this place,... More

Ate breakfast here the two mornings I was in Memphis. I was there around 8am and it was fairly quiet but was really picking up by the time I was leaving. It's in a great location within the historical district, right by the Motel Lorraine. And they have GREAT sweet potato pancakes!!

It's just a few blocks from the Civil Rights Museum. We stumbled across it looking for food before the museum and it happens to be the oldest restaurant in the area. We even lucked out and sat in the first booth, which is where the owner ate with his dear friend for decades. Lots of history and really good sweet... More

Waited 20 minutes for water. The review about the locals don't eat there is true. This place may have been a great place to eat when Elvis was alive but that was over 45 years ago.

We had breakfast here and the sweet potato pancakes were just - out of this world! A little off the Main Street but please don't miss the opportunity to eat here. I want to go back.......

We walked here from The Peabody for breakfast on a Sunday morning and enjoyed both the food and the ambiance. We both had the sweet potato pancakes with sausage, eggs, and grits, which sounds like an enormous amount of food, but, in fact, the portions are quite reasonable. The pancakes were a little on the sweet side, but not too... More

Stopped in out of the blue. Nice old style diner. Ask what was good and Brooke suggested the pot pie. Might have been the best pot pie I have ever had. Mash potatoes and graveyard were great. Broccoli and cheese was just ok. When I am back again on business I will have it again.

I opted for the #5 recommendation of the Sweet potato pancakes, two eggs, sausage, and buttery grits all for under $10.00. The website is really worth a thousand words with pictures from all angles, but the reason I was there was for the eating and it was well worth the walk. Everything was hot, and prepared just the way I... More
