We recently stayed on the Isle of Bute in Rothesay for a little holiday. We all decided to eat at The Squat Lobster after it was recommended to us & we saw these amazing reviews! It is just a little "hut" on the pier, but the food is fantastic!! We had smoked haddock, battered haddock, salmon goujons, smoked sausage &... More

Four of us had goujons and chips and all agreed they were the best we'd ever had! The fish was perfectly cooked, the batter was golden and crispy, and the chips were fluffy in the middle with a lovely golden crunchy outside...some still had skin on - perfect. The building is great and the service was fun. More than a... More

Thank goodness for a chippie that concentrates on good tasting healthy fare! I have eaten here many times and rate it as the best chippie in the land. The chips are excellent - unlike most other chippies - and the fish selection is unsurpassed - haddock, haddock goujons, scampi, squat lobster, langoustines. A must for anyone with a good sense... This is the find of the century. Worth getting the ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay just for the Squat Lobster. I've never reviewed anywhere before, but this was amazing! We were wandering desultorily along the seafront and failing to be inspired when we stumbled upon this most unusual fish and chip shop. I've given it four stars for romance... More

The Squat Lobster provided a great lunch of battered haddock and chips on a family day out to beautiful Rothesay. The fish was fresh, the batter was golden and perfectly crispy, the chips were rustic, with some skin still on - just the way I like it. The presentation was lovely - lemon and tartare sauce included, the portion was... More

Made the mistake of believing some of the reviews and it's own advert. Chips are of the frozen variety and the fish although in itself tasty enough, was covered in a batter unlike any I have ever had from a proper fish n chip shop. The staff though, are very nice and had plenty of banter. If you want a... More

Sadly missed the Squat Lobster, so had fish and chips and a portion of mussels. Left most of the mussels as they hadn't been cleaned -still had beards. The fish was very good, but the chips were a little overdone to my liking. Worth a visit if you like a fish supper.

Found right next to the pier at Rothesay, this unassuming blue hut houses the most delightful little chippy. We ordered two single fish at £5 each. What we got was one of the best pieces of fried fish we have ever eaten. A great sized portion of Haddock in a cardboard box, fresh lemon and tartare sauce, an a plastic... More
