At the end of August we spent a week camping on the beautiful Isle of Bute, we got take out at several places and on our last night we discovered this gem! Such an unassuming exterior for the amazing food that is produced here. We were delighted by the choice on offer, all fresh and local. My partner had smoked... More

My two friends and I, who had just spent an enjoyable day cycling around Bute on Wednesday 3rd Sep, popped into the Squat Lobster before we got the late Cal Mac ferry back to Wemyss Bay and had the most delicious haddock and chips. The fact that the fish suppers were served to us by a delightful lady, named Cheryl,... More

..... this is the best fish and chips in Rothesay. I wandered along to this quirky chippie during a recent visit to Rothesay when my hubby was not in the mood for food. Had the haddock and chip supper and wandered back along the bay in glorious early evening sunshine being followed by the seagulls waiting for scraps - of... More

We recently stayed on the Isle of Bute in Rothesay for a little holiday. We all decided to eat at The Squat Lobster after it was recommended to us & we saw these amazing reviews! It is just a little "hut" on the pier, but the food is fantastic!! We had smoked haddock, battered haddock, salmon goujons, smoked sausage &... More

Four of us had goujons and chips and all agreed they were the best we'd ever had! The fish was perfectly cooked, the batter was golden and crispy, and the chips were fluffy in the middle with a lovely golden crunchy outside...some still had skin on - perfect. The building is great and the service was fun. More than a... More

Thank goodness for a chippie that concentrates on good tasting healthy fare! I have eaten here many times and rate it as the best chippie in the land. The chips are excellent - unlike most other chippies - and the fish selection is unsurpassed - haddock, haddock goujons, scampi, squat lobster, langoustines. A must for anyone with a good sense... This is the find of the century. Worth getting the ferry from Wemyss Bay to Rothesay just for the Squat Lobster. I've never reviewed anywhere before, but this was amazing! We were wandering desultorily along the seafront and failing to be inspired when we stumbled upon this most unusual fish and chip shop. I've given it four stars for romance... More
