A Treat Hidden Away

We were recently staying in the nearby Caravan park where we were based while doing a Job in Barnstaple, my colleagues had come down the night before and told us of this pub which had sounded excellent and made me very jealous as I had arrived at 11pm not having eaten that evening. After a long... read more

We have been here a couple times before with friends and have not been deterred. As we arrived the sun was shining and my wife, our three children and I planned to stop for a drink and perhaps food, (although perhaps a little late on a Sunday). Despite being virtually deserted as we entered the bar, the atmosphere was pleasant... More

We called ahead to see if they had any tables free as it was a Friday night. They did. The atmosphere was friendly (not the tumbleweed, music/conversation stop as you walk through the door.) Very helpful landlord and staff. Great choice of food at a reasonable price which came out quickly and the portions were huge. Also dog friendly which... More

Greeted by a charming host who turned out to be the brother of the legendary grumpy landlord. Also spoke to a chap on the customer side of the bar who was also charming and who turned out to be THE grumpy landlord. Not grumpy at all - neither of them. Perhaps they chose to be perfectly cheerful, just to annoy.... More

4 of us needed lunch so we chose this pub/restaurant and were surprised by the extensive menu. When I Asked what was available, everything you can see on the boards. A very good response.I had the mussels in a creamy wine sauce the others had baguettes all very filling and well presented and reasonably priced.Being at a loose end in the evening,there... More

Went here for Sunday lunch. Not a friendly welcome - just ignored by person behind the bar for some while. However, when we ate the service was good and the food was very good - lovely roast beef, and a good selection of vegetables. Rating for service is a combination of bar and food staff.

Not greeted, starred at then told "we are not open"! We found this confusing as the door was obviously open & there were at least a dozen people in the pub watching the tv with drinks. No signs to say a Private Party - no clear sign to say the pub was closed. We will use The Bell Inn next... More
