Greeted by a charming host who turned out to be the brother of the legendary grumpy landlord. Also spoke to a chap on the customer side of the bar who was also charming and who turned out to be THE grumpy landlord. Not grumpy at all - neither of them. Perhaps they chose to be perfectly cheerful, just to annoy.... More

Went here for Sunday lunch. Not a friendly welcome - just ignored by person behind the bar for some while. However, when we ate the service was good and the food was very good - lovely roast beef, and a good selection of vegetables. Rating for service is a combination of bar and food staff.

Not greeted, starred at then told "we are not open"! We found this confusing as the door was obviously open & there were at least a dozen people in the pub watching the tv with drinks. No signs to say a Private Party - no clear sign to say the pub was closed. We will use The Bell Inn next... More

We have had a couple of two day breaks at the Exeter, within the last few weeks, introducing it to two sets of friends. Breakfasts were excellent and tailored to our individual choices, accompanied by fresh coffee. Evening meals were superb. Great choice, beautifully presented, quality ingredients, all served piping hot. Imaginative menu using much localy sourced produce. Owner and all... More

Just back from a 2 night stay here with wife and another couple. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the food, both evening dinner and breakfast was excellent. This is a very old building with a thatched roof, sloping floors and buckets of character, we even imagined Cavalier soldiers billeted here during the troubles!! If you want something different from... More

We had a delicious meal here, prompt and courteous service . The pub is a lovely quaint old building, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere, it doesnt try to be hip or trendy, its traditional and lovely..

We visited on a quiet Saturday evening in late January, and chose to eat near the log stove in the bar. The welcome was warm, and the food very acceptably priced. Our meal was slightly marred by the absence of the promised herb dumplings, which the chef apparently forgot to prepare! But we were compensated by provision of complementary coffees.... More
