The River Exe Cafe is a floating barge just off the Ski lane on the River Exe, and is in the heart of Exmouth’s water sports fraternity, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kayaking, sailing to name just a few, however it is also situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, protected by Natural England. Open from April to September only . The Exe Estuary is home to many rare birds and creatures including Avocets, Osprey and of course our friendly grey seal. With the potential to take up to 100 people on board the Cafe has been designed very much like the “Ski in Ski out” wooden chalets found on the ski slopes of many ski resorts, but with the intention that the quality of food and service exceeds all expectations of the external look and feel. The barge has a licensed bar and covered outdoor space with heaters and indoor seating to relax well into the evening without suffering the cold. Customers to the barge really are of all ages and walks of life, ranging from the usual river users and water sports enthusiasts to bird watchers, artists and holiday makers. Special events such as birthday parties, anniversaries, stag & hen parties to corporate & team building days can be arranged. Private and exclusive use of the barge is also available.

Fabulous

Had a amazing trip out on the water taxi, we were introduced to 2 seals on the way up, the captain got us close to them for a photo, he also explained all about the river and surroundings. On arrival to the cafe we were greeted with a smile and taken to our table. Great service throughout and the... read more

Having enjoyed many pleasant times in the cafe last year we were a little apprehensive as to what we would find this year after almost all the staff had changed. Well, what we found was very encouraging, the food was excellent, the service could not be faulted and was fast, efficient and friendly. Whilst it's not cheap, the portions were... More

Went up to the Exe Cafe a couple of days ago with a couple of friends for lunch and "wow'! What a great afternoon. Very attentive staff, extremely good food, prompt service from beginning to end all overseen by a delightful manageress. Cannot fault it. We will be back.

We visited The River Exe Café on Easter Sunday and overall the experience was good, the water taxi on the way over was a great adventure for our children and the reception we received from the staff was very thoughtful (they gave us warm blankets for the kids). The food itself was decent, presentation was basic and at times pretty... More

We booked online and they arranged everything, the river taxi arrived on time and left on time, the setting for the restaurant is just unbelievable, the food is very good, the menu does change dramatically so don't choose your food in your head like we did as it was very different. The whole experience is great, take warm clothes as... More

Albeit a slightly chilly afternoon, we all met at the docks with some very excited children in tow. We enjoyed a calm water taxi to the cafe which was extremely pleasant and good to talk to the skipper about the local area. We were met with smiling faces and a hand off the taxi. It being a blustery day we... More

Like previous reviewers I too have some issues. We went for dinner on Good Friday and I understand this was only the first week it was open. The weather was awful , cold and windy but the kids loved the boat ride over and we were were all excited by the novelty of the location. We were lucky we had... More

This is a great concept but one that is poorly executed. 1. If you are going to put your restaurant in the middle of an estuary and open for the season in April you really need to make sure that your customers are not shivering in the cold. When one of the 2 gas burners in the room went out... More

I found this little gem of a floating fish restaurant on tripadvisor after changing travel plans at the last minute. It was the Saturday of the Easter weekend. Called a couple of times at midday but no answer. I sent a text thinking there was no hope of securing a reservation, but by 5pm I had a response that a... More
