The River Exe Cafe is a floating barge just off the Ski lane on the River Exe, and is in the heart of Exmouth’s water sports fraternity, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kayaking, sailing to name just a few, however it is also situated in an area of outstanding natural beauty, protected by Natural England. Open from April to September only . The Exe Estuary is home to many rare birds and creatures including Avocets, Osprey and of course our friendly grey seal. With the potential to take up to 100 people on board the Cafe has been designed very much like the “Ski in Ski out” wooden chalets found on the ski slopes of many ski resorts, but with the intention that the quality of food and service exceeds all expectations of the external look and feel. The barge has a licensed bar and covered outdoor space with heaters and indoor seating to relax well into the evening without suffering the cold. Customers to the barge really are of all ages and walks of life, ranging from the usual river users and water sports enthusiasts to bird watchers, artists and holiday makers. Special events such as birthday parties, anniversaries, stag & hen parties to corporate & team building days can be arranged. Private and exclusive use of the barge is also available.

This is the perfect venue for lunch or dinner with family, friends or in a group. It is a particularly good choice if friends or family from out of town are visiting because it is such a novel setting. When you book, the staff arrange the water taxi and let you know the time so it's all haste free. The... More

We booked the river taxi and were warmly greeted on arrival at the dockside, the taxi costs £5 ahead. Our starters and main courses were delicious and all our party had seafood, the wine list is extensive and we enjoyed a lovely rose. The waiting staff are friendly and attentive. The only criticism was the Eton Mess pudding which was not... More

What I liked about our visit is that it is a day out. The water taxi was good fun and it was a lovely pre and post dinner treat to see a seal lazing in the evening sun. The food and service in the restaurant were both excellent but it was chilly. The cafe is very child friendly.

We came across this eatery on TA whilst staying in the Exmouth area. Because it is moored within the river diners have to get a river taxi from Exmouth which was £5 return for the 15 minute trip. We looked upon the journey as part of the 'experience' and was good value. The restaurant itself has a nautical feel with... More

This is a really lovely restaurant in the middle of the river exe. We went over Easter and whilst the food and staff were good, the weather was not (!) big waves, a cold wind and strong currents made the trip a bit cold and quite nauseating. I don't know what the owners could have done to improve this, other... More

Unique setting. Friendly water taxi drivers both ways. Friendly restaurant staff. One of our starters didn't arrive with the others. 5 of us chose the pork belly special, which overall was very good, but all felt the parmintiere potatoes were insufficient. We were also very uninspired by the dessert menu. In conclusion, a little over priced for the experience, but... More

After seeing a picture of the seafood platter online complete with whole fish in skin and garnished beautifully with crabshell and claws ,we wanted the same. Nice experience to travel by boat here with good commentary on the local history and to see the seals en route. The cafe itself is very basic and not even in a stylish way.... More

First visit for celebration birthday dinner. Had a fab time. Great food, good service by friendly staff with novelty of being afloat in the Exe estuary and having to get there by water taxi. Will certainly go again and would highly recommend for a dining experience with a difference. Can imagine a visit on a balmy summer evening would be... More
