Expect to wait to get seated unless you get here around 5:30 pm on a week night. Very quaint old grocery store, hence the name, converted into a great eatery. Best for smaller parties 2-4 but can accommodate larger group with a WAIT. The tamales are great! The ribs, pulled or chopped BBQ, or links are excellent. Baked beans and... More

Ordered a bbq sandwich. When I bit into it, I bit into a bone about 1" in diameter. The waitress and manager were rude and told me to set the bone aside and continue. I mentioned that I had just healed from oral surgery and was glad that I had not re-injured myself. The manager said that they had attorneys... More

This place is really quaint and BUSY! It's small so there was a bit of a wait. The staff is really nice and move! It reminded me of an old meat market store. Their bbq is a rub type which I am not a fan. Others in the group got the ribs and 'hot links' and loved them. BTW these... More

Sadly, we didn't leave ourselves enough time to properly sit in the restaurant and enjoy our grub. Next best - take it to go. Very happy with my ribs...HUGE amount of food for the price. I could only eat two ribs, a few bites of slaw and the hardboiled egg. Beans and roll have to wait. Not quite dry rubbed,... More

The Commissary has it all - great BBQ and authentic down-home atmosphere. Southern comfort food at its finest. Eating here is always a part of my visit to family in Germantown - the chopped pork is the best you'll find anywhere, and the service is quick and friendly. Usually we are so full after our meals that we have no... More

Living in Germantown over 30 years, I've eaten at the Commissary many times. The food, service and Southern ambiance is known over a wide area. More than once I've been asked by a Germantown vistos "Can you help me find the Commissary?" Located in the center of old Germantown, we drive by it several times each week. The line of... More

My hotel insisted that this was the place where locals get their BBQ fix and overall it didn't disappoint. I popped in for lunch and was told that the pulled pork or chopped pork sandwich was a no-brainer. It was dirt cheap but tasted like gold. The only thing I regret was letting the waitress push me into ordering tamales.... More

Every time I come to Memphis, this is the ONLY place that I will come to for BBQ. I have tried al the DDD places and they all suck. I will make the drive out to Germantown just for this place. It is ALWAYS crowded and the ribs are full of flavor and packed with meat. I went on the... More

I was on a business trip last week, and my contact took me to a small BBQ place in Germantown, an eastern suburb of Memphis, TN. While a bit off of the beaten path, the Commissary is well worth the effort to get there! We both shared the cheese & sausage appetizer. The cheeses were obviously from the standard fare,... More
