Laura Ingalls lunch stop

We were in town visiting Laura Ingall's Memorial and stopped at Ward's for lunch. What a fun and nostalgic experience! I don't know the history of Ward's, but the restaurant appears to be in an old department store. If you can picture about 10 tables sitting in the middle of an old clothing... read more

If you are looking for a quaint place for breakfast or lunch - try Ward's we ate there several times on our stay and we pleased everytime. Staff and patrons are very friendly and the food is good with plenty of choices.

We liked visiting this store. The coffee was great, There is also a gift shop and a general store. Lots of locals there while we visited and they couldn't have been friendlier. The owner was there and waited on us. My daughter enjoyed the hot chocolate. Lots of baked goods, she settled on the chocolate chip cookie which she said... More

The lady in the Chamber of Commerce across the road suggested we have lunch here. What a great place. This was the America we hoped to find. It was Taco Friday and the place seemed to mostly be full of locals taking advantage of the all you can eat taco bar. We just had coffee and cakes but it was... More

The meal was great and reasonably priced. I gave it 4 stars because they were out of a few of our choices. Service and atmosphere were perfect!

We rolled in to De Smet at 1:45 pm, 15 minutes after Wards closed. We tried another establishment which was a major disappointment. After sandwiches in the room that night (since Ward's was closed for dinner) and breakfast at our B&B, we popped into Ward's for lunch and fell in love. The food was delicious, decor authentic, and authentic warmth... More

The store is an old country store and the history of the place is very interesting. There are very few DeSmet choices for dining and so this is the best available. The staff are super friendly and very helpful and gracious. The food is typical diner fare and not incredibly memorable.

We did dinner during the pageant, Food was OK, but the famous lemonade was the worst I have ever had. I was still tasting it later! Location is good for walking around the main street of town.

Ward's served up darn good pulled pork and cheeseburgers for us on a recent pageant night in De Smet. Store staff were very friendly and helpful in making gluten-free suggestions and kid-friendly choices for our dinner. My 8-year old niece loved the cream soda choices they had and went with orange that night. We loved the old-time feel of the... More
