Ward's served up darn good pulled pork and cheeseburgers for us on a recent pageant night in De Smet. Store staff were very friendly and helpful in making gluten-free suggestions and kid-friendly choices for our dinner. My 8-year old niece loved the cream soda choices they had and went with orange that night. We loved the old-time feel of the... More

Welcoming and friendly staff, good quality food, but limited selection. The staff were all friendly and helpful on local fare. Great little place to stop. Lunch menu included hotdog, hamburger, and pulled pork sandwich. Dinner menu added lasagna. Will stop here again. Also served breakfast.

We arrived after the lunch hour, so they had a limited menu, which was fine for us..chicken salad sandwich, BBQ sandwich and a hot dog. (The chef leaves at 1.30pm). The staff was super friendly. The building is a historic building that once belonged to Pa Ingalls.

I was thrown a little off guard when we walked in for breakfast and the locals stopped talking and looked at us, but I am also from a small town so I know how that goes. The breakfast menu was small but to the point. I recommend ordering a breakfast including eggs because the pancakes are a little bigger than... More

With very limited options of places to eat, based on reviews we stopped in at Ward's for donuts before our tour to find out what the lunch schedule would be. The hand written sign said they would be open until 2:30, but we were told to be there by 1:30 to eat. Food was really good and so was the... More

As someone else mentioned, check times and availability. We got there on a Saturday just in time for coffee and a roll, but that was it. Then they closed, even though the display case was full of baked goods. What did they do with the leftovers? Sell them Sunday? (not open) Off the main highway but on the main street.... More

If you are doing DeSmet you are probably doing the Little House on the Prairie thing and if so, don't miss Ward's. It has been in the same family for decades and makes great food, pastries, and coffee. Check out the specials as they are usually a home run. They also carry gifts and clothing.

We enjoyed the food and atmosphere! Plenty on the menu to please all ages (we had 6-77) and friendly staff as well. It was nice to look around the store while we waited for our food. The desserts from the bakery were delicious and we bought fresh baked rolls to take with us.

Call ahead to get food service hours because they do not appear to be consistent or to follow what is in print. Reviews here intrigued us but they closed 2.5 hours ahead of what was in print...very disappointing.

Store and bakery/cafe. Great pastries. Locally made gift items. Home cooked lunch was great. Full service coffee bar. And they serve discount lunches to local seniors during the week - sort of the small town Meals on Wheels but with a social aspect. Family owned, we saw at least three generations. The youngest was a tween or so and super... More
