After numerous trips to Beaufort and the Sea Islands, we decided to finally stop in here for lunch. The lady sweeping out back where we parked greeted up with a kind smile and thanked us for coming. Upon entering the establishment, we were greeted by a lethargic older waitress, unsure if she had Gullah roots or not. We picked our... More

We detoured to St. Helena Island on our way to Hilton Head to try this place. It was a unique experience: Unpretentious setting in an old building, friendly but slow paced service, and food that was authentic and good, but not the best Gullah cuisine we've ever tried. We had the shrimp gumbo and the lowcounty crab soup dinner that... More

We decided to try this place out. Its kinda like eating in someones home, dont expect the service to be quick and dont expect refills.the food was pretty good (comfort food) but dont be tricked by anyone saying "you wanna taste this?" If you taste it, you get charged for it! It was an experience.

We wanted to experience some gullah cuisine. So we journeyed to St Helena Island, where we were told that a large gullah community existed. The first restaraunt we found, that was advertised as a gullah restaraunt appeared to be all white. (I am under the assumption that the gullah are black). The next restaraunt was closed, but there was a... More

I found a review of this restaurant in a food magazine and determined that I would find it when in South Carolina...Bill Green is the owner and chef, and he is teaching his son to cook in the Gullah tradition. If you can, be sure to find Bill himself, and chat with him a few minutes...a great experience you won't... More

While visiting Penn Center, top your trip off by eating at Gullah Grub. The staff is family and you are served like you are too! The ribs I had with collard greens and red rice were smoked to perfection and fell off the bone. The creole was also delicious but the ribs!!!- to die for. Local artwork worth purchasing is... More

Okay, it turns out we weren't thrilled by the cuisine. But it's fun to try the local soul food in a very homey atmosphere. Combine the art gallery across the street, and you'll learn about Gullah.

We have not been back for a couple of years. On Sunday we stopped to pick up a take out lunch. They were serving at tables, but only two. I ordered three containers on fish chowder; they only had two. So we ordered a crap soup instead. It took ten minutes to be served. Conclusion? No cooking going on, just... More

Read the reviews, went, loved. The service was a tad slow, but the food made up for it. Try the swamp water- a mix of sweet tea and lemonade. It's not too sweet, not too lemon-y. I had the gumbo, potato salad, collards and red rice. Other dishes my cohorts got were the fried shrimp and potato salad, and ribs,... More

While staying a week in Hilton Head, we took a drive around the islands and stopped in here for lunch. What a delight! Very casual, with a wonderful, friendly staff. But the food! Everything was delicious! We had: crab soup, mac & cheese, fried shrimp, cornbread and the swamp water (sweet tea & lemonade). If you're anywhere near St. Helena... More
