A South Carolina tradition since 1939, Melvin Bessinger's Bar-B-Q Restaurants are beloved and famous for our St. Louis style pork ribs, chicken and "Best BBQ in Charleston". But don't take our word for it, come on down and experience the flavor at one of two locations, in Mt. Pleasant and James Island. Thank you for your continued support, y'all!

Nice BBQ and rib place

The amounts were more than ample! Came with meat, two vegetable side dishes, and cornbread. None of the four of us could clean our plates (we are in our 70s).

My wife and I had the pulled pork platters. The pulled pork was made with a mustard-based sauce. The flavor was very average. Our servings also contained some very large chunks which were inedible. The best part of the platters were the sides. We had the slaw, baked beans, hash and rice, and mac and cheese. All of those were... More

Bring a healthy appetite if you order ribs! Excellent ribs and sides. Thank you for the 20% discount for military and God bless Melvin's.

Was here from Wisconsin and wanted some barbecue in the south, Melvin's was near so we went there. We had sandwiches and they were barely warm and then we added cold sauce , do I need to say more, yes. No flavor at all, wife does pulled pork at home in crockpot that is better and almost any sauce we... More

The place is simple - order at the counter, wait for your food and seat yourself. The staff is friendly and the barbeque was hands down the best I've ever had. They have a sweet mustard that really adds to the experience.

My husband and I are always searching for food places to try that are different from any place we have at home. We definitely recommend Melvin's. Fast, friendly service. Very clean. The bbq plates were moist, delicious, and had just the right smoky flavor. We could have made a meal on those amazing onion rings alone! The price was a... More

I wouldn't rate this as the top barbecue I have eaten however I will say the sweet potato casserole is one of the best. I usually get a pound each time and able to eat for a few days. They have military discount but you can't use it for bulk items (need to change that)

Let me be honest, I'm not a bbq connoisseur. I'm from West Texas where tex-mex is king. My companion and I were on our way to Boone Hall and very hungry after spending the morning on a harbor tour. We passed Melvins and said, "let's try it!" We were not disappointed. First, let me mention the service. The girl working... More

They used to be good and reasonable now their still good but not worth the money. They think the whole town is rich now and make sure that only the rich people can afford it .major bummer especially being that they downgraded their food in the last year

Went there on sat because "the home team" on Sullivans Island was so crowded....should have gone to "sticky fingers"....we had not been there before....and the person taking our order could not give us any idea on certain menu items as they had never eaten it before,,,,someone sitting near us said it can be hit or miss there,,,,,got the brisket,,,,it was...
