Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. "With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine," he says. "Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents - along with others from around Charleston - will appreciate what we have to offer." Fat Hen's main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country flourishes, sourced from the finest local produce farmers. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, root vegetables & mushrooms. Fat Hen's Short Rib, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth.

No need to go to Charleston for great food!

Dinner with a group of six. Food was very good for all. I had the lamb shank, group had several fish dishes, skinney chicken, and a steak. Service was good and pace of the meal was perfect.Did get louder as night went on. Reasonable corkage fee ($25, I think). Waived when we ordered a couple of... read more

On our recent visit to Charleston we were chatting with some locals about good, non-touristy places to Dine. "Fat Hen" was mentioned as a French style restaurant on Johns Island. We almost missed the place, it was hidden behind some bushes and was very plain looking. Seeing no cars, I thought the place may be closed. I turned into the... More

This was a family trip to show a visiting relative some of the unique eateries in the area. We drove from West Ashley for an early (5:30 p.m.) dinner. We had a good sampling of the food (starters - oysters, chicken livers, mesclun salad, and roasted beet/arugula salad)(entrees - Coq au Vin, Salmon, Duck Confit, two of the "Healthy" chicken... We had an excellent meal at the Fat Hen. Everything that our family of 4 ordered was very good. The best was my husband's Swordfish special. My daughter ordered the Shrimp Pasta and it sounded like it might be boring but it was so good and flavorful! Service was very friendly and attentive.

The bread was the best bread we have ever had. I love meatloaf, but it is hard to find, there meatloaf was excellent. For starters, we each had a salad, my wife had a heirloom tomato salad and I had a wedge salad, the best ever, The service was excellent. I suggest you make reservations as it is always full.

Worth the trip to Johns Island, the Fat Hen delivers delightful dishes that will not break the bank. Our family stumbled into this establishment and it is now our favorite restaurant. Make sure you plan ahead, reservations are hard to come by.

A visit to Fat Hen is not to be missed! If you are visiting downtown Charleston, I would highly encourage you reserving a night at Fat Hen for an outstanding dinner! The drive to Johns Island is only about ten minutes from downtown, and well worth every minute and every mile to get there! Chef Fred always delivers a phenomenal... More

6 of us went to the Fat Hen around 8:30 on a Thursday. Having no reservation we were prepared to wait, but we got a table right away. Food was outstanding. Everything was fresh, served hot and the diverse menu choices were all tempting. From mussels to meatloaf, and everything in between, everything ordered was delicious. Will make this a... More

If you don't plan ahead, you might miss this wonderful dinner spot. It's on Johns Island, on the road to Kiawah, and the site and decor are nondescript, but the food and service are lovely. Great dishes with fresh ingredients and simple, elegant preparation. Delicious! Make sure to get a reservation as this place seems to fill up fast -... More
