Loved this restaurant! Reservations a must. Beautiful drive down Maybank Highway with the live oaks making a canopy over the road. Turning into the driveway for The Fat Hen immediately sets the tone for a great evening. The restaurant is fun and lively on this Saturday night. Nikki, our waitress, was informative, out going, and attentive. We ordered sautéed flounder... More

Most of the food was bland...breakfast burrito barely had chorizo in it.. eggs Benedict needed seasoning desperately.

I shared the mussel appetizer with a friend and found several mussels closed. Never having mussels before, but remembering something about not eating closed mussels, I confirmed with the waitress. Her initial response was "yup" and when I asked for clarification of her "yup" response, she said "don't eat them, they can make you very sick." And with that she... More

I have dined at the Fat Hen twice, while vacationing in Charleston. It is organized around low country food, but otherwise reminds me a little of a French restaurant. We had the seared grouper the other night and were disappointed. While the sauce and vegetables around the grouper were really excellent, the grouper itself had a little "off" flavor, as... More

We did takeout because of family illness and it was a delight. 6 meals were prepared to perfection from salads to entrees. the sauces. I saw they have now opened "The Coop" out back! Can't wait to try.

As a Charleston native I've driven down Maybank Highway on Johns Island thousands of times - on my way to visit relatives on Wadmalaw Island, or to the Rockville Regatta, or to the beaches at Seabrook and Kiawah. Never did I think of Maybank Highway as a destination - until now. The Fat Hen is a wonderful surprise - lowcountry... More

Five of us have this slightly-out-of-the-way restaurant a try. 4 adults and one very picky young adult. We were seated right at our reservation time, which was nice. Appetizers of an oyster dish and the cheese plate were fantastic! The cheese plate had three cheeses, mince jelly, fig jam, grapes, and bread. The three cheeses were very nice, especially the...
