Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. "With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine," he says. "Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents - along with others from around Charleston - will appreciate what we have to offer." Fat Hen's main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country flourishes, sourced from the finest local produce farmers. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, root vegetables & mushrooms. Fat Hen's Short Rib, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth.

Took the good advice.

My wife and I have been traveling in the South and had just arrived in Charleston. The owner of the B&B that we stayed at highly recommended the Fat Hen. We decided to give it a try it without a reservation which apparently is not a great idea. The only two seats left where at the bar so we... read more

Came here on out vacation - firstly the food is very good and they also have a wine deal of the day, which we enjoyed a lot. My only complain about the place is that we got seated outside, granted without reservation and one feels a little bit as an 'outsider' no pun intended. Management very good, came and asked... More

Visited the Fat Hen with extended family and had a great experience. Service was good, but perhaps the weakest aspect of the visit. Many of the servers seemed very young and they sometimes made small errors or failed to work together. If anything though it felt like they were trying too hard. Food was fantastic and the atmosphere was nice.... More

Cute local restaurant that serves up everything to satisfy your taste for down home southern food. I had a "fall off the bone" shortrib accompanied by mashed potatoes and collard greens. It reminded me of my grandmother's cooking. I will be back for sure!

We were visiting Charleston, then Kiawah for a week. We had the pleasure of dining at 5 different top restaurants in Charleston, then the Fat Hen during our week in Kiawah. I have to say it was by far the best meal we had in South Carolina--probably the best meal I'd had all year and I just got back from... More

This place was recommended on a blog so we gave it a try. It's pricey but the food was excellent and the wait staff was excellent. Lovely concept in the middle of an island and I would highly recommend in the future.

Loved the atmosphere the second we walked in--cute and cozy. Ordered the brisket and it was phenomenal, juicy, smoky flavored and cooked to perfection. My husband had the fried shrimp, which was also perfectly seasoned. Both sides were bacon blue cheese coleslaw, the best thing ever, and wonderfully delicious pommes frites. As if that wasn't enough, the dessert special was... More

Our waiter was very good and the restaurant itself is very nice. The food was OK. The ingredients were fresh and well prepared, but with so many good restaurants in Charleston, this one is just OK. It does have one advantage over the others on Maybank - it's open on Mondays!
