Description: Chef Fred Neuville is excited to embark on his first solo venture. “With Fat Hen, I am striving to create a neighborhood restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere and signature French-inspired Southern cuisine,” he says. “Johns Island is a fast-growing area and I believe island residents – along with others from around Charleston – will appreciate what we have to offer.” Fat Hen’s main dishes center around innovative French classics with Low country flourishes, sourced from the finest local produce farmers. Neuville’s tangy-but-tender BBQ Scallops are first marinated in a house-made pomegranate barbecue sauce, bacon wrapped and grilled to perfection. The Braised Chicken features locally raised free-range chicken braised in red wine with rich bacon lardons, pearl onions & mushrooms. Fat Hen’s Short Ribs, a favorite signature dish among family and friends, is braised for hours in a rich veal broth. In addition Fat hen offers catering services.

Delightful ambiance, friendly staff, and unique dishes! I had steak tar tar for the first time here, and it was divine. They provide a very wide array of options on their gluten-free menu. Definitely make a reservation - this is a popular hidden gem (if that makes sense...)

After encountering more than one hour and a half wait downtown on a Saturday night, we decided to head out to Johns Island and Fat Hen for dinner with a party of 6. We sat right down which was nice. I guess brunch is very big there too, and they take reservations for that. We had a great meal, they... More

It's amazing that after 4 1/2 years, every meal we've eaten at Fat Hen surpasses the last. We ate every single bite of every single dish--The Rib, Coq au Vin, and an amazing steak. The bread pudding was divine. I can't say enough about the wonderful, witty staff and quality of service. We can't wait to return.

My family returned from our annual trip to Kiawah and we stopped at Fat Hen for brunch. Reservations are needed and the earlier you get there the more specials they're likely to have. The food and service were excellent. The mason jars they put your drinks in are perfect. The mimosas are good too. The omlettes are delicious. I wouldn't... More

A group of 6 went to Fat Hen and were very pleased with the service, the cocktails and the food. The appetizers and specials were superb. The wine selection was good but not exceptional. Next time we are visiting Chas we will definitely try and make it back. Word to the wise: make a reservation.

Great atmosphere and service on top of just great food... Nice portions and on the heavy side of the equation... We have been coming here every year since they opened probably 7-8 years ago...

I made my second trek last night to Fat Hen - and coming from Wild Dunes on IOP, it was no small feat at dinner time! Our party of 8 (4 adults, 4 kids ranging from 9-15) had a wonderful dinner. The setting is island resort casual and just noisy enough to let you talk freely and laugh out loud... More

The food is great supported by wonderful wait staff. After having 4-5 great meals here, we have taken the restaurant off our list ( and some of our friends have done the same) because of the noise. The basic problem is a large dining area with a hard floor and hard low ceiling, therefore the noise is so loud you... More

This is one of the most popular restaurants outside of Kiawah, almost always have to wait, even with reservations. Noisy, but food is always excellent and the portions are plentiful.

Atmosphere is wonderful. It was lively, crowded and accommodating. My dish was flounder in grits. I cook a lot and use capers but the chef put way too much in the dish and it over powered it making it very salty. My husband had shrimp in grits and his was simple but good (not great just good). My sons had... More
