Description: Hunter-Gatherer Brewery has been brewing and serving classic ales since...
Hunter-Gatherer Brewery has been brewing and serving classic ales since 1995. Starting in 2015, we will regularly feature cask-conditioned ales served from wood kilderkins made by Alastair Simms, the only master cooper in the United Kingdom. Michael Jackson, aka the "Beer Hunter", visited the Hunter-Gatherer Brewery in 1997. He wrote that the Hunter-Gatherer is "the kind of place CAMRA (Campaign For Real Ale) members might enjoy. The beer is the hero, rather than the brewery being an afterthought. In the U.S., And even sometimes in Britain, the latter is too often the case." Michael Jackson was the best beer writer and critic the world has known. A compliment from Michael Jackson is as meaningful as it gets in the brewery world.

Fun brewery type dining

Good place for casual dining and medium-sized groups. We had a group of eight and had to split up into two tables. We found this place based on the hotel referral. The draft beer tasters (four in a flight for $4) were fun and the IPA received top votes among our group. I ordered the trout and it... read more

I cannot say enough about this place. Beer and Food are always good. Service is excellent and the location is prime. Parking can be challenging but worth it.

We visited last year while in town and decided to return. The location is very cool with lots of old brick and exposed metal. I agree with other reviews that the beer is good, but not great. We had burgers and were pleased with them. We only get to Columbia about once a year, but this will be a regular... More

Hunter-Gatherer is a great place to stop for some local beer in Columbia. They have their ESB (which is delicious) and Wheat always on tap. This visit I was able to have an English Ale which was excellent. The food is always great. My wife and I each had a gyro (hers with lamb, mine with portobello mushrooms). Go on... More

We stopped in for a late dinner treat. The beer was tasty although a limited amount to choose from. The H&G burger was delicious, the pizza small in size and the Bean Burger quite interesting. Overall the service was great, the locale excellent, the building very cool. Nice place and a nice stop on our visit to Columbia.

A wonderfully, simple spot serving great food and beer. They have 3 beers made in house. Had dinner and went back for lunch the next day. Does not try to be too much. My kind of place.

Food is great! Brew was disappointing. I've dined many times with the Hunter- Gatherer crew and they always prepare good quality food. Over the years the beer has lost something. I'm a big fan of beer and what used to be great at H&G is now just alright. Still, great place, good atmosphere, local food, brew, and a quality experience.

Tried this location on my most recent visit to Columbia. Downtown behind the statehouse in The Vista. Brewpubs are my favorite kind of places to try when I travel - this one was very good. Upscale menu and great beer.

Had dinner here with some friends after the second day of the SCASL* conference and was pleasantly surprised. Sadly, no Amber Ale was available but I was given a taste of a replacement suggestion (can't remember it now - I swear I only had a pint!) but it was a bit hoppy and strong. Food...Pimento Cheese App. YUM! Can I... More

Do check USC sporting events before planning a trip, immediately before and after you don't stand a chance at a table. Aside from that, this is a great casual place for a very good beer and a good upscale bar menu. Most beers are seasonal, so you'll have to see what they're serving when you arrive. Burgers, gyros, salads, pizzas.... More
