Once upon a time, this was THE place for clam chowder and clam fritters...not any more. If you have expectations of the past, stay away. The clam chowder is grey dishwater with few potatoes let alone clams. As for the fritters, these are cakes or rather clumps of soggy oil infused dough missing the clams. I recommend more research on... More

Stopped because we were hungry and it looked clean. Ice cream stand with a small separate restaurant, that has been in operation since the 50's serving local seafood and light dishes. This is NOT a fancy place, it is like nine small tables and a short, simple menu. But, everything about it was great. Seems we all are looking for... More

We look forward to opening day here for the outstanding RI clam chowder and clam cakes that are brimming with fresh clams and cooked to perfection. The lobster rolls and fries are also worth a visit. The owners are teachers who spend each summer helping the rest of us to create happy seafood dining memories. Stop in and see why... More

Hard to believe but the Hitching Post does have the best lobster roll around for a great price. Lot's of lobster meat and little lettuce on a toasted bun.Get the lobster roll dinner with O rings and slaw for a great take home meal. We do it all the time during the season.

Used to be very good but got chowder this year that tasted like dishwater! We told the guy at the window and he said he'd pass on the news and shut the window. Guess they didn't care but it was horrid. The fish was burnt, the scallops were okay but paid quite a bit. Pricey..

Ate there with the family yesterday. Totally overpriced. Worst RI chowder we've ever had clams and potatoes were almost nonexsitant. Won't happen again.

Was directly across from our hotel -- Krystal Penguin great stay-- was pretty hyped on yelp and I saw a lot of cars there - always a good sign. Ordered the RI clam chowder -taste was ok poor job actually adding clams. Very disappointed in that. Also had a plate of fried shrimp. Very good but how does one mess... More

First visit was in June 2010 when we couldn't believe how delicious the whole belly clam sandwich tasted. Large perfectly fried whole belly clams in a lightly toasted buttered hot dog bun. We returned last week and couldn't believe we were at the same place from 2010. The clams were miniature and the clear broth clam chowder soup had very... More

I have been going to the Hitching Post in Charlestown, RI since I was just a little girl. It has changed hands several times since then, but remains a summertime favorite. The clams cakes are the best around!
