You have got to stop here! The owner/ manager(?) is a real trip. As it turns out my mother in law had visited his hometown back in Austria. If you can at least try to order your meal in German. And you must, I say MUST make a point to show that you enjoy his food. You can't go wrong... More

If you a re looking for authentic German/Austrian food (and lots of it!) this is the place. Large menu and servings. They put effort into preparing the food but not an atmosphere. And they do provide some table-side humor.

I asked the desk clerk at our hotel and a clerk in a lady's store and both said the food was good. It was NOT. It looks like a school cafeteria, the food is so bad neither my husband nor I ate even half of it. My pork smelled bad and tasted worse. I ate a few bites and quit... More

This place does not have great curb appeal and goes down-hill as you enter. The menu is on a chalkboard and you order at the counter. This is not the place for people looking for atmosphere and fine dining; however if you like great food and lots of it then this is the place. Most items are difficult to spell and pronounce.... Went to Herwigs in State College, PA while I was visiting from Niceville, FL. It was something my little sister wanted to do for her Big 50 Birthday. How disappointed I was!! My sister asked (after her hubby had spent over $70 for dinner) for her favorite dessert and the guy behind the counter refused even after he was told... More

While we truly enjoyed our dinner the desert was to "die for". The white monkey was out of this world.

I picture myself making German food (yes I've learned from my mil) and attempting to run a restaurant in a big 10 college town -- I'd probably have a Herwig's clone. My heart gives it a 5 for good food, authenticity, and family-owned feel; the critic in me gives it a 3 for all the burdens of college town restaurants.... More

We had dinner at Herwig's this past weekend. It's always an adventure to find out their hours. The last time we tried to go there they told us the wrong closing time when we called by phone. When we arrived, they would not let us in. We called again this weekend, and SURPRISE, they gave us the wrong closing time.... More

This is such a great choice if you like this type of food. Our family hadn't eaten here in some time... and since the students were gone for the summer, we took advantage and stopped in a couple times this summer. Sure, not everything on the menu is always available... but you should know that going in. Seems to us... More

What a let-down. The restaurant serves only a subset each day of the items on the website menu. It is not a full service restaurant, but the food delivery was slow and not all diners were served at the same time. The main courses were tasty, but the cashier forgot to pass on our dessert order and, when we finally... More
