Great German/Austrian Food

My husband an I prefer to eat different types of food other than the basic American food when we travel so we were quite happy when we came upon this Austrian/German Restaurant along College Avenue in State College. We always try to eat here when we visit Penn State. Simple, no fuss atmosphere... read more

We had dinner here with friends, but we also have lunch here from time to time - when my waistline and cholesterol level can handle it! The main dishes are made to order, very well prepared, and delicious. One of my favorites is the Bernerwurst - a housemade sausage stuffed with onions, bacon, and cheese. The kaiserschmarm desert will feed... More

It has a semi Biergarten feel to it, without the beer. You can BYOB though. The menu items are written on a chalkboard and you order at the register. An employee brings your food to you. My husband and I both enjoyed our platters. Authentic Austrian food served within 15-20 minutes of ordering. The owner wasn't there that evening, but... More

We read the reviews, we love Austrian food, we've been wanting to try this place for awhile. And then we did. It wasn't terrible, but award winning is a stretch. Everything on my plate was brown and tasted brown. Both our meats were overdone & dried out. For us, it was overpriced and bland. On a positive note, the staff... More

I'm not sure why these other individuals would even consider saying anything close to negative about Herwig's. Having lived in Bavaria, I can say that the food at Herwig's was not only authentic, but simply excellent! Even the Bratwursts are handmade. The desserts are outstanding. If you wish to have a heffe weissen, Belgian triple blond, or any number of... More

We had the roast pork and veal schnitzel and both were delicious. The portions were large and the sides were excellent. We didn't experience the quirky host which was fine but would definitely return.

A small place. The menu is on a chalkboard. But everything is made in-house and always top quality. Expect a lot of pork and sausage. If you like German/Austrian food, you will be pleased with this place.

Having grown up on German cooking, and having a wife of German heritage, Herwig's seemed like a natural selection for dinner. The Schweinwurst and Weinerschnitzel were both delectable and the portions were enormous. We loved the quirky jokes and the atmosphere was a lot of fun. We will be back.

A bit overpriced for breakfast but the bacon thick cut may have been the best I have ever eaten! Step up order your food be slightly abused and sit where you want it is all part of the charm and experience. Good stop for something different!
